Catholic catechist commits suicide, leaves behind a note

A Catholic catechist from Rongo, Migori County, Kenya on Monday mid-morning, January 20, committed suicide over claims that his elder brother was frustrating and mistreating him in their parents’ homestead.

Paul Ochuodho Mbogo’s body was found hanging from a rope tied to the roof of his house.

Ochuodho’s mother, Cecilia Adoyo Mbogo, said she was shocked to be told by the deceased’s other siblings that Ochuodho had been found dead in his house at Mitwe area in Rakwaro, Rongo Sub-County.

Ochuodho wrote, in his suicide note, which has since been taken by police, that his elder brother constantly insulted him for “being a man of strong faith”.

“He [brother] often threatened to harm me, warning I should leave our parents’ compound as soon as possible,” said Ochuodho in the note.

The father of three young sons said, in the letter, that he had had enough of his elder brother’s threats, and had decided “to make life easy for him [brother]”.

The family’s representative, Paul Denga, however refuted the allegations in the suicide note, saying Ochuodho killed himself because of loneliness and depression after his wife fled her matrimonial home a few years ago.

East Kamagambo assistant chief, Mary Ocholla, said Ochuodho had often complained of financial problems.

Ochuodho’s body was taken to Rongo Sub-County Hopsital morgue.

How NIS prevented trafficking of nine girls

The Operatives of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Command in Lagos, has rescued another 9 girls who were to be trafficked to Lebanon, Cairo, Dubai and India on Ethiopian, Peace, Egypt and East Airlines.

The service Public Relations Officer, DCI Sunday James, made this known in statement on Saturday in Lagos.

According to him, four of the girls claimed to be traveling for employment without knowing their employers nor aware of the nature of job they were going for.

“This discovery was made after intensive interrogation by NIS officials,” he said.

James said the shady journey was organised by agents who took advantage of the girls innocence and ignorance.

He disclosed that two of the girls had earlier claimed to be going for visit.

“However, the two, later confessed they were going for hustle in Dubai. Another three, of the girls, claimed they were going to India for medical treatment without referrals.

“When further asked the nature of sickness they said yellow fever before they finally confessed to be going for hustle in India,” he revealed.

Investors storm Oko Oloyun’s office to demand their money

Tens of Lagosians stormed the LASU Road office of late Alhaji Fatai Yusuf, popularly known as Oko Oloyun, to demand the money they invested in his Ponzi scheme.

Oko Oloyun, a popular Lagos-based trado-medical expert, was murdered on Thursday around 4:30pm on the road while travelling to Iseyin, Oyo State. He was reportedly attacked by some hoodlums at Igboora.

Following his demise, people who invested money in his Ponzi scheme, known as “Option C” stormed the Head office of his company to demand how to retrieve their money.

The investors were the more confused as his two offices at Egba Idowu along Igando road in Lagos were shut with no one to provide information.

The investors, however, vowed to take drastic measures if a statement was not issued by the organization as soon as possible.

Just like the day MMM folded up, the investors in “Option C” programme narrated how much they had invested and insisted they could not afford to lose their hard-earned money.

An investor, who chose to be called Emmanuel explained that Option C is a money-making programme that promised a 10% return in two months.

Emmanuel, who was trembling while speaking, added that he invested in the scheme in July 2019 and had only received returns once, contrary to the agreement of two months which was stated.

Mrs Bunmi (first name withheld), a retired teacher, who was clearly in shock, stated that she had invested millions having joined the programme in December 2018. She said she had only received N500,000 from her investment and that she was not sure of her fate with the death of Oko Oloyun.

Clutching her investment documents, she said that she filed to pull out after inconsistency in payment but rescinded her decision when she was told that she could not get her investment back in full.

Mr Azeez, another investor, said he invested N1 million in September 2019 and had decided to pull out after he was not paid in November. He, however, vowed to pursue his profit with all his ability.

Mrs Bisola (second name withheld) said she invested the money sent to her by her military husband who is fighting insurgents in North East. She said she could not afford to lose the money. She urged the management to speak up and address the investment programme issue quickly.

Mrs. Sulaimon, an investor, said she aborted her trip to travel down from Badagry to Igando when she heard about the assassination of Oko Oloyun.

She noted with tears that she had invested a lot and could not afford to lose her investment. She was however optimistic that the returns would be paid after meeting her co-investors who cheered her up.

However, in the midst of the lamentation, some investors who had visited the house of the late Oko Oloyun in Lagos alleged that they were denied access by the security men, with the statement that “Alhaja said we should not allow anybody to come in, they are all in Ibadan.”

After the outcry, the investors agreed among themselves to visit the house of the deceased in Lagos during the Fidau prayers on the eighth day to demand their returns.

However, a security man at Oko Oloyun’s Egan Idowu office alleged that one of the rooms in the head office was intentionally burnt by unknown men prior to Oko Oloyun’s death.

He said the workers who were on duty had been arrested.

I fear nobody, I have four lions in me – Fani-Kayode

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation Minister, says he cannot stop talking and that he feared nobody because he has four lions in him.

Fani-Kayode, in a statement, said someone called him on Friday to offer some unsolicited advice.

“He said I should stop speaking out and opposing evil “or else something may happen”. It was a veiled threat.

“I smiled and asked him how a servant of the Most High God, a son of Chief Remi Fani-Kayode and a protegee of President Olusegun Obasanjo, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Prophet T.B. Joshua bow before the enemy?

“I have four lions in me together with the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Courage is my second name: I will never bow and I will never stop.

“Like Shakepeare’s Macbeth, “I shall fight until the flesh be hacked from my bones and damned be he who first cries hold,” he said..

Bird flies 6, 948kms from Finland to Bondo-Kenya

A rare migratory bird has landed in Kenya after flying a distance of 6,948 kilometers from Finland.

The migratory bird known as Osprey was spotted in West Imbo Location, Usalu Village, Bondo Sub County in Siaya County.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the bird has flown to Kenya, covering a distance of 6,948 kilometres or 4,317 miles.

A member of the community, Walter Oloo, spotted the bird on January 20, 2020 and reported to KWS Siaya County team.

The bird was caught in a fishing net and seems to have struggled to release itself. It has some bruises on the legs, though it is healthy.

It was delivered to the KWS veterinary department on January 23, 2020.

It will be stabilised by administering IV fluids and provided proper diet, then monitored for a few days before being released back to the wild.

The bird’s origin has been established from a refereeing ring on its leg whose details show that it was given the identity in Finland (Museum Zool, Helsinki Finland, www.ring.ac, M-68528).

Kenya Wildlife Service Head of Veterinary Services, Dr David Ndeereh said they will share the information with the East Africa Bird Ringing Association to obtain further details on the bird.

Expert says coronavirus is spread through eyes as killer disease 'shuts down China'

A top medic who contracted Coronavirus says the deadly respiratory disease is so contagious it can be transmitted through the eyes.

Wang Guangfa, who was a leading figure in helping China fight Sars in 2003, himself caught the virus but has since recovered.

Mr Wang says he believes he became infected because he did not have protective eyewear.

The respiratory specialist at Beijing’s Peking University First Hospital had reportedly been ridiculed in some parts of the media after he contracted the disease despite saying it was “preventable and controllable” two weeks ago.

The expert has now claimed that he may have contracted the disease because of a lack of eye protection when visiting fever clinics and isolation wards in Wuhan, in Hubei province, where the outbreak emerged.

His warning comes as 14 patients tested for coronavirus in the UK were given the all-clear, although checks are now being carried out on more people.

news comes as it emerged doctors treating sick patients are collapsing at work as hospitals become 'overwhelmed' in one city, the Daily Star reports.

He said: “At that time we were highly vigilant and wore N95 masks.

"But then I suddenly realised that we didn’t wear protective glasses.”

He says he developed conjunctivitis in his left eye after returning to Beijing and around three hours later he began had a fever and severe catarrh.

Mr Wang thought he had the flu at first as he had never seen a Wuhan patient suffering from conjunctivitis before.

But later took the test for the coronavirus when flu medication did not work and he tested positive.

He said the most likely explanation of him contracting the virus was it entering through his eyes.

China's National Health Commission expert Li Lanjuan said that staff who had direct contact with coronavirus patients needed to wear protective glasses whilst other people only need face masks.

There are currently 830 confirmed cases of patients infected with the virus in China and a small number of cases have been confirmed in other countries including the United States, Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Singapore.

The latest official death toll from the virus is 26.

Bride forced to wear wig for wedding after hairdresser cousin 'ruins' her hair

A bride was forced to splash out more than £1,000 to buy a wig to wear on her wedding day after her hairdresser cousin "ruined her hair".

The woman was devastated when her plans for lavish long locks - courtesy of some new extensions - resulted in her having to have all her hair cut off.

Her cousin, a trainee hairdresser, offered to create her new look but, when things went south and she was asked to pay to fix the damage she'd caused, she refused.

The cousin turned to Reddit to ask whether she was out of order for failing to pay, but was inundated with people telling her to cough up the cash.

When her cousin Milly told her she wanted clip-in extensions for the wedding, she offered to fit nano-bond extensions instead so they would last for the honeymoon as well.

And of course, with her dream hair in sight, she was "ecstatic" to see the results.

Both the cost of the extensions and the fitting from a local salon, came at a hefty price tag of $1450, equivalent to £1,106.

But after doing some more research, the woman found a set for $600, £458, which she claimed were "fantastic quality" - bargain.

To save the bride some cash she offered to fit the new hair for her, at half the price the salon was charging.

And when the hair arrived, the pair were eager to get the process started.

Once she was finished, Milly seemed "super happy" with the outcome.

But the brilliant results didn't last long and the next day when Milly's hair was matted with "a weird goo."

The woman got to work trying to comb through the individual extensions, and even though she'd read that it's normal to experience some strand loss, soon enough more than 15 had fallen out.

Luckily, Milly managed to snatch up a last minute appointment at a local salon to see what the problem was.

"Later that day Milly turns up at my house and my jaw all but hit the floor because she had a pixie cut.

"She came storming over hysterical telling me the salon said I used the wrong kind of bonding glue and that I shouldn't have been using glue at all for the extension method I was using."

The bride-to-be insisted he cousin pay out for a $1300, £991, wig for the wedding day since her hair wouldn't grow in time.

She wrote on the thread: "I don't think I should have to do this! I followed the tutorials and seriously don't know what went wrong I did this to help her and now she's asking I pay an insane amount on a wig".

One fellow Reddit user said: "Pay for the damn wig. This is 100% your fault. Not only did you oversell your skills, not bother to get proper training on a semi-permanent hair treatment, and ruin someone's hair, but you did it RIGHT BEFORE HER WEDDING. Jesus Christ."

And another agreed: "If you have only "watched tutorials" you don't charge someone $600 and do their wedding hair extensions. You owe her at MINIMUM the $600 plus the cost of the salon visit to get the extensions out. The cost of the wig is not an unreasonable ask."

Pregnant 13-year-old says she 'fell in love at first sight' with 10 year-boy

A pregnant teenager who claims a 10-year-old boy is the father to her unborn baby, says the pair fell in love at first sight.

Daria, 13, and Ivan, 10, have appeared on TV in Russia ahead of their baby's arrival to share details of their relationship.
According to the children they met each other a year ago and fell in love at first sight.

Daria, who is just eight weeks pregnant, said during the On Air show, which they appeared on with parental permission: "A friend of mine introduced us and two days later we started dating.

"Ivan said he was in love with me. We tried to spend as much time together as we could.

"We like walking down the streets holding hands and kissing."

But there are some questioning whether the 10-year-old boy could have fathered a baby at all.

Local paediatrician Nikolai Skorobogatov said: "Theoretically both children could have reached reproductive age."

But Dr Evgeny Grekov, a urology and andrology expert, says Ivan could not be the father.

He said: "We rechecked the laboratory results three times so there cannot be any mistake.

"There cannot be sperm cells. He is still a child.

"There is even no testosterone. And just to add, he still has childish sex organs. Puberty has not started. So we have a lot of questions."

According to the girl, who is planning on keeping the child, she and her boyfriend take care of each other and set their social media as 'married'.

The schoolgirl said: "Ivan has gastritis and I do not allow him to drink carbonated beverages. Sometimes I worry about my weight but he says that I am in perfect shape and do not need to go on a diet. He is very kind."

Daria revealed that she and Ivan had sex at his home when his mother was away.

She said: "After we did it for the first time, we hid from each other under the blanket out of shame."

Soon after Daria started to feel sick and had nausea most days.

The girl’s mother Elena took her to hospital for examinations but doctors failed to find the cause of her 'illness'.

Finally, Elena bought a pregnancy test kit for her daughter.

Elena, who was also participating in the show, said: "The test showed that Daria was pregnant. After that, she confessed to having sex with Ivan.

"I was in shock. I could not say a word.

"When we started talking she said she would not kill the baby and I support her decision. I do not want her to go under the knife."

Ivan and his mother Galina, 28, are planning to help Daria to raise the child.

Galina said: "I did not know what to say after learning that my 10-year-old son fathered a child.

"I think Ivan himself does not quite understand what happened.

"He said they came to our apartment and Daria offered him to have sex.

"They did not use any contraceptives and obviously did not realise the possible consequences."

Some of the families' neighbours express doubts over whether the boy is indeed the father.

A man living next door said: "I think somebody else got the girl pregnant and now they want to put all the responsibility on the boy."

And a woman said: "I do not believe the boy is the father of the child. I doubt he is developed enough for that."

Father-to-be Ivan said: "Daria has never been with another man. I know that for sure. I am the father of her baby."

The children say they became a target for bullying in their hometown of Zheleznogorsk in central Russia’s Krasnoyarsk Krai region.

Daria said: "When I was thinking about the delivery process I was scared. But then I saw my baby during an ultrasound. It was so tiny and cute. Now I am ready to give birth."

Serena Williams makes a shock Australian Open exit in the third round

Serena Williams suffered her earliest exit from the Australian Open in 14 years, falling to a shock defeat to China's Wang Qiang in a stunning third-round upset.

The American's bid for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title ended with a 6-4 6-7 (2-7) 7-5 defeat to Wang.

When they met at the US Open last summer, Wang won just one game and 15 points, but it was a completely different story this time as the 27th seed claimed the win of her life as well as leaving Williams' dreams in tatters.

Williams was highly critical of her own performance after making 56 unforced errors, saying: "I was optimistic I would be able to win. I thought, 'OK now finish this off'. I honestly didn't think I was going to lose that match.

"I just made far too many errors to be a professional athlete today.

"If we were just honest with ourselves, it's all on my shoulders. I lost that match. It's not about the tournament, it's just like I can't play like that. I literally can't do that again. That's unprofessional. It's not cool."

Couple 'starved man to death so they could inherit part of his £3.5m estate'

A "vulnerable" man was starved to death by a carer who wanted to inherit part of his £3.5milestate, a court has heard.

James Anthony Sootheran, 59, was found dead in his bedroom at High Havens Farm in South Newington, Oxfordshire, on March 18 2014.

Now Lynda Rickard, 61, and her husband Wayne, 64 - who both lived with Mr Sootheran - are charged with his murder.

Three other suspects, Michael Dunkley, 48, Denise Neal, 39, and Shanda Robinson, 50, are on trial for fraud.

All five defendants deny the charges against them.

Prosecutor Oliver Saxby told a jury at Reading Crown Court that the case involved "casual, opportunistic greed" that developed into "something utterly routine and brazen".

He said the alleged victims in the case, Mr Sootheran and his mother Mary Joy Sootheran, who suffered from dementia prior to her death aged 92 in August 2012, were reliant on Mrs Rickard for care, but were ultimately "exploited" by her.

"She was eyeing a windfall," Mr Saxby said.

"That windfall came to be dependent on Anthony Sootheran's death. And she got impatient, and worried that the windfall might elude her."

The court heard that Mr Sootheran, who owned High Havens Farm, had "complex" mental health issues and was a recluse who was prone to self-neglect.

His mental health gave Mrs Rickard "the perfect cover for precipitating his death", Mr Saxby said.

"She achieved (this) by isolating him, utterly neglecting him, failing to obtain appropriate medical care for him and ultimately, depriving him of food and drink.

"In the simplest of terms, assisted by her husband, she starved him to death, thereby securing for herself and her family the windfall she craved."

He said Mrs Rickard had already admitted forging the wills of Mr Sootheran and his mother.

The forged wills entitled Mrs Rickard to half of Mrs Sootheran's estate, valued at just under £1.5 million, and a third of Mr Sootheran's, worth about £3.5 million, the court heard.

The jury was told Mrs Rickard had also pleaded guilty to four fraud charges, two counts of forgery, two counts of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, and possession of articles for use in fraud.

Mrs Rickard is further charged with the manslaughter of Mr Sootheran through gross negligence, while Mr Rickard, 64, is accused of causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult.

Mrs Rickard also denies a charge of fraud, in that she allegedly abused her position as carer for Mr Sootheran by allegedly using his money for her own purposes.

They are also both accused of a single count of fraud by false representation relating to Mrs Sootheran.

They deny all of the charges against them.

China quarantines 13 cities as it battles coronavirus

As deaths from coronavirus soared to 26 on Friday, Chinese authorities rapidly expanded to 13 cities and 41 million people a mammoth quarantine effort aimed at containing the deadly contagion as nervous residents were checked for fevers.

While the World Health Organization (WHO) held off on declaring a global emergency despite confirmed cases in half a dozen other countries, China expanded its lockdown to cover an area with a total population greater than Canada’s.

A range of Lunar New Year festivities have been cancelled, while temporary closures of Beijing’s Forbidden City, Shanghai’s Disneyland and a section of the Great Wall were announced to prevent the disease from spreading further.

The previously unknown virus has caused alarm because of its similarity to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which killed hundreds across mainland China and Hong Kong in 2002-2003.

The WHO said China faced a national emergency but stopped short of making a declaration that would have prompted greater global cooperation, including possible trade and travel restrictions.

The outbreak emerged in late December in Wuhan, an industrial and transport hub of 11 million people in China’s centre, spreading to several other countries including the United States.

China is in the midst of its Lunar New Year holiday, a typically joyous time of family gatherings and public festivities.

But on Friday Wuhan was a ghost town, its streets deserted and stores shuttered.
