Student dies as fire razes school hostel in Zaria

The authorities of Albany International School, Zaria confirmed the death of a JSS 3 student, Abdurahman Doko, in a fire incident that gutted a hostel on Wednesday.

The fire, which started around 12.30 p.m., destroyed the male students’ hostel of the school situated at Gaskiya Layout in Zaria, Kaduna.

Dr. Abdulraheem Abdulganiyyu, the school director, told the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), that the cause of the incident had not been confirmed.

“As at the time the fire started, there was no electric power at the school, and no cooking activities are allowed in the hostel. The school kitchen is not located around the hostel. So, we are still at a loss,” he said.

The director commended the Fire Service for its prompt response that stopped the fire from spreading.

Abdulganiyyu explained that the school was on vacation, adding, however, that final year students, who were preparing for the West Africa School Certificate and UTME, were around.

He said that Junior Secondary School students, who were also preparing for their Junior School Leaving Certificate, were also around.

According to him, as at the time the fire started, all the students were in their respective classes on the ground floor of the school.

Corroborating, Umar Mohammed, Sectional Head, Fire Service, Zaria said that only Doko died, while the cause of the fire was still unknown.

Mohammed added that other students on the ground floor were safely evacuated, adding that the prompt response quickly quenched the fire.

He advised members of the public to ensure that all electrical appliances were switched off when not in use, while extra care should be taken when cooking.

“Many households are reverting to the use of cooking gas for domestic purposes; we must strive to adhere to safety practices to avert fire outbreaks,” he said

PSG overturn Dortmund deficit, advance to champions league quarter-finals

Paris Saint-Germain shrugged off having to play in an empty stadium as Neymar set the French club on their way to a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday that took them into the Champions League quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate.

PSG came into the game at the Parc des Princes needing to overturn a 2-1 defeat in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Germany, but Neymar’s 28th-minute header put them ahead on the night in the second leg amid a surreal atmosphere, as banned supporters gathered outside the ground instead.

Juan Bernat then deflected in a Pablo Sarabia assist to make it 2-0 and PSG — for whom Kylian Mbappe was only fit enough to appear as a substitute — go through to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2016.

The victory breaks a run of three straight exits in the first knockout round of the competition, at the hands of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Indeed Dortmund are just the fourth team PSG have defeated in a Champions League knockout tie since the Qatari takeover in 2011, following wins against Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea, the latter on two occasions.

However, their opponents were disappointing, with Erling Braut Haaland never looking like repeating his first-leg heroics when he netted twice. They finished the game with 10 men as Emre Can was sent off late on.

This was one of several Champions League matches this week and next being played out in an empty stadium after authorities banned fans from attending due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Court remands carpenter for allegedly stabbing man to death

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, Lagos on Wednesday ordered that a 27-year-old carpenter, Idowu Tajudeen, who allegedly stabbed his neighbour to death with a kitchen knife during an argument, be remanded in Ikoyi Custodial Centre.

Chief Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghre, who gave the order, did not take the plea of Tajudeen, who is charged with murder.

She ordered that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

Magistrate Oghre adjourned the case until July 28.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that Tajudeen committed the offence at 7.20 p.m on March 2, at Temu village in Epe area of Lagos.

Olaluwoye alleged that Tajudeen stabbed the deceased, Mr Garba Dauda, during an argument.

He said that the deceased died on the way to the hospital and was confirmed dead by a doctor at the hospital.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 222 and is punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Atletico Madrid humiliates Liverpool out of champions league

Atletico Madrid ended Liverpool’s defence of the Champions League on Wednesday as Marcos Llorente’s double and Alvaro Morata’s late strike stunned Anfield with a 3-2 win after extra time to progress 4-2 on aggregate.

The holders looked to have ended Atletico’s dogged resistence when Roberto Firmino put them ahead in the tie after Georginio Wijnaldum’s first-half header forced the game into an extra 30 minutes.

However, Liverpool were made to rue a host of missed chances to kill the tie off in 90 minutes as Llorente twice curled home from outside the box before Morata twisted the knife by breaking away to score in added time of extra time.

Defeat ends Jurgen Klopp’s proud record of never losing a two-legged European tie as Liverpool manager.

However, it remains to be seen if and when the last eight will even be able to take place due to the chaos caused across the continent by the new coronavirus.

A packed Anfield played its part in trying to roar Liverpool onto another famous Champions League conquest as, unlike in numerous countries across Europe, no restrictions have so far been put on supporters attending games in the United Kingdom.

But it was the nearly 3,000 travelling fans in attendance, despite the fact games in Spain will be played behind closed doors for the next two weeks, that celebrated a stoic rearguard display from their side.

The European champions did not manage a single shot on target in a 1-0 defeat in Madrid three weeks ago, but Jan Oblak was quickly put to work.

Wijnaldum’s flicked header offered a warning for Atletico of what was to come before Oblak parried Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s driven effort.

Just as the Spaniards thought the job was half done with no damage done, Wijnaldum’s powerful downward header left Oblak with no chance two minutes before the break.

Student allegedly throws own new born baby from storey building

A young woman suspected to be a student of Federal Polytechnic, Oko in Anambra State, who was delivered of a baby girl, allegedly threw the baby away from a storey building.

The woman, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, reportedly delivered the baby girl in her boyfriend’s room at Munachi private hostel and threw her over the fence from the first floor of the hostel to the next empty plot.

Dr. Chinonso Nwosu, a medical officer at Chukwunoso Specialist Hospital, Oko, where the new-born baby was admitted, told daily trust reporter that the baby girl was found hanging on a barb wire of a fence at one of the private student’s hostels of the polytechnic. He said though the baby has a wound on the leg where she was trapped by the barb wire, her condition was stable.

According to him, the police later arrested and brought the suspected mother of the newborn to the hospital to be breastfeeding the baby. “She was brought to the hospital in handcuffs, where she is currently breastfeeding the newborn baby,” he said.

It was further gathered that the boyfriend of the woman, who was also reportedly arrested by the police, connived with his roommate to allow his girlfriend deliver the baby in their room so as to perfect their plans of throwing the baby away.

Reacting to the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Oko Polytechnic, Mr. Obini Onuchukwu, said the school authority got to hear about the incident “like every other person”, saying that the security department of the institution had been directed to get full details of the matter.

He said it was not clear if the suspect and her accomplice were students of the institution.

He added that since the incident happened in a private hostel outside the polytechnic’s environment, the school authority does not have control over students’ actions there.

The Anambra State Police spokesman, Haruna Mohammed, said they only found the story on the Internet and that the command was investigating it.

Italy announces CLOSURE of all shops as coronavirus death toll climbs by 31% in 24 hours

Italy has said all shops except pharmacies and food outlets will be closed in response to the country's coronavirus outbreak as the death toll from the coronavirus outbreak in Italy jumped in the last 24 hours by 196 to 827.

A top Italian doctor said intensive care wards should place an age limit on beds as a way of prioritising medical resources amid the deepening crisis.

Rather than admit patients on a 'first come first served' basis, hospitals should swap to 'catastrophe medicine' guidelines - typically used in war zones and during natural disasters - where those with the greatest chance of survival are given priority.

The guidelines should apply to all patients needing intensive care treatment and not just those suffering from coronavrius, according to guidance published this week by the Society of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SAARI).

If a limit on beds is implemented it could mean elderly patients with no signs of coronavirus being turfed off ICU wards to make space for younger patients who have longer left to live.

It comes as total confirmed infections in Europe rose to 22,485 with 940 deaths, according to a new tally which is compiled from official sources.

In Italy, the number has risen to 12,462 cases with 827 fatalities.

Imam was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to the charge bordering on impersonation and cheating to the tune of N1,895,000 (One Million Eight Hundred and Ninety-five thousand Naira).

“This sentence is to serve as a deterrent and punishment for the offences he committed knowingly,” the judge held, and warned him not to indulge in any further act of criminality.

Earlier, Counsel to the EFCC, E.K. Garba, told the court that the convict defrauded one Arc. Mohammed Isah of the sum of N1,895,000.

In respect of his guilty plea, Garba had urged the Court to sentence him, according to the tenets of the law.

The Defence counsel, M.B. Usman, however, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy as his client was a first-time offender.

“He is remorseful and has promised not to indulge in any criminal offence again,” Usman said.

Dad allegedly laced his children's meal with rat poison

The fatal poisoning of two Gauteng children allegedly by their father is believed to have been the tragic culmination of years of the little kids being abused by him.
Mikael, 10, and his little sister Michelle, 5, met a harrowing death on Thursday evening after eating mincemeat prepared by their father, Nthato Moloi.

Moloi allegedly laced the meal with lethal doses of rat poison, which caused the children to froth heavily at the mouth, dying excruciatingly at their home in Tshongweni Section in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni.

The children’s mother, 33-year-old Rudy Moloi, is fighting for her life in the intensive care unit of an Alberton hospital after also eating the meal.

Rudy collapsed moments before an ambulance arrived to declare her children dead after she had frantically carried her son and daughter to neighbours when they started bubbling up foam from the mouth.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo confirmed on Tuesday that an inquest docket had been opened to investigate the allegation that Nthato killed his children with rat poison.

The father is also at a hospital in Ekurhuleni after allegedly ingesting the same poison on Friday - the day after his children’s tragic death.

“The inquest will determine whether the father (Moloi) was the one who poisoned the children to death,” Masondo said.

Taliban rejects Afghan gov't conditional prisoner release order

The conditional prisoner release order announced by Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani is against the US-Taliban agreement signed in Doha last month, a spokesman for the Taliban armed group said on Wednesday.

"It is properly explained in the peace accord that first 5,000 prisoners would be freed and then the Afghan dialogue would be initiated," Suhail Shaheen, spokesman for the Taliban in Doha, Qatar, said.

"We never agreed to any conditional release of the prisoners. If someone claims this, it will be against the peace accord that we signed on February 29."

The Taliban reaction comes after Ghani issued a decree ordering the release of 1,500 Taliban fighters, which presidential spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said was the first of two phases of releasing 5,000 Taliban prisoners.

Sediqqi wrote on Twitter that the initial release was a goodwill gesture to kick-start peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

Another 3,500 are to be freed after negotiations begin, on the condition that there is a tangible reduction in violence, according to the four-article pardon decree.

However, amid a public feud between Ghani and his main rival, Abdullah Abdullah, it is not clear who would represent Kabul in intra-Afghan talks, even if the Taliban agree to start negotiations.

Ghani's presidency has been challenged by Abdullah, who has also sworn himself in as the country's president.

Since the US-Taliban deal was signed in the Qatari capital on February 29, nearly 40 people have been killed in attacks, with 32 killed on Monday in a gun attack claimed by the ISIL (ISIS) armed group.

Lagos to arrest police, military officers riding okadas on restricted routes

The Lagos State Government has ordered the arrest of policemen and military officials caught engaging in okada riding in prohibited areas across the state.

The government frowned at the uniformed men disobeying the state’s laws on traffic and restriction of okada riders, saying that it was illegal for any security operative in mufti to ride commercial motorcycles on routes where Okada and tricycles had been restricted.

The pronouncement was part of the issues discussed during a security meeting held at the State House in Marina. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu chaired the meeting, which was attended by Commanders of all security formations in the State.

Briefing the press after the meeting, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, said the enforcement of the restriction order would be executed with more force to completely keep Okada and tricycles away from the restricted routes.

Omotoso said: “We have just concluded the State Security Council meeting, where we reviewed the ongoing enforcement of Okada and Keke restriction order in the six Local Government Areas. Matters concerning uniform men engaging in commercial motorcycle operation came up in our discussion and there has been an order restricting them from doing that.

“Only a uniform man who is fully kitted and who rides motorcycle as his own personal mode of transportation is allowed. If any uniform man ventures into commercial motorcycle operation or Keke, the action of such a person is illegal and such persons are going to be arrested if they are caught.”

The Commissioner reiterated that the State would not relax the laws restricting Okada and tricycles on the highways, praising Lagosians for standing firm behind the government in the ongoing enforcement of the restriction order.

Woman falls in love with her Tesco grocery delivery driver and now they’re getting married

When Helen Alder opened the door to bring her groceries in back in September 2017, she had no idea it would change her life.

At the time, she was a single divorcee mum-of-two and she wasn’t looking for love but romance quickly blossomed with the delivery driver Chris Goody.

Chris, 48, was working as a Tesco delivery driver in Stroud, Gloucestershire, and every week, he would go back to bring Helen her shopping. He would offer to bring them in for her and soon he was staying for a quick coffee or stopping to use her bathroom.

Eventually, he plucked up the courage to ask her out on a date, without the weekly shop sitting around them.

And from early on, Chris knew he would marry her some day, giving her the nickname FMG, which stands for future Mrs Goody, on their second date. Now, almost three years after meeting on Helen’s doorstep, the couple are planning their wedding – an elopement in July 2020, with just them and their dog Cedric.

Helen tells Metro.co.uk: ‘Back then it was just me and the kids and I had been single for years. I wasn’t looking for anything but I did think Chris was very handsome when he turned up.

‘We started off just chatting on the doorstep, then each week we would just talk more and more. He’d bring the shopping in, maybe have a drink and use the bathroom because it’s hard on the road. ‘He noticed that it was just me and the kids and then asked how long I had been single and things like that.

After about six weeks of chatting, he asked me if I wanted to go for a drink. ‘ Their first date was on 20 September 2017 and things moved quickly as just seven months later in April 2018, Chris moved in, and by May, he’d decided to ask Helen to marry him.

She adds: ‘We went on holiday to Devon and went for a day trip to Lundy Island. ‘When you get off the boat there, you have to walk up this hill and about a third of the way up, he said “Let’s rest for a few minutes”. We sat on a rock and he produced this ring box and asked me to marry him.

‘That place will always have a special place in our hearts.’ Since then, the couple have been planning their big day together, but decided that for the ceremony, they wanted something very simple, with just them and their dog Cedric, on 21 July 2020. They’ve planned a second celebration for friends and family at home in Gloucestershire.

Chile to quarantine football stars Sanchez, Vidal

Chilean soccer stars Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal will be quarantined when they return to their home country from Europe to play in a World Cup qualifier this month, Chile’s health minister said on Tuesday.

The players - who are signed to European clubs - are due to fly first to Uruguay for a World Cup qualifier on March 26 and then to Chile to face Colombia.

Italy announced a quarantine and advised against all but non-essential travel until April 3 after its death toll from coronavirus jumped by 168 to 631 this week.

“We do not make any distinction by people’s profession because nobody is immune to this virus and indeed the quarantine determined today for Italy applies to everyone,” said Health Minister Jaime Mañalich, according to local news website Emol.

“Of course, if these players want to work out on a machine in their homes, or all be quarantined together at Juan Pinto Duran (the national football stadium), then that’s their call.”

A source at the Football Federation of Chile told Emol it had been told nothing about quarantine plans for the players.

“So far there are no changes to our plans,” a source said. “What the minister says comes as a surprise.”
