I killed my facebook friend because he insisted on sodomizing me, suspect explains

A 28-year- old man, who allegedly killed his Facebook friend and dumped the corpse in a bush in Nanka, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, said he took his life because the deceased insisted on having s.e.x with him.

The suspect, Angus Chukwebuka Nwankwo and his brother Chidiebere Omeyi, were among the over 100 suspects paraded weekend before newsmen at the Police headquarters in Amawbia, Awka South South Local Government Area of the state.

Nwankwo said he met with the deceased on Facebook where they agreed to meet in Nanka for homos.e.x.u.a.l acts.

He said the deceased had promised to offer him N20,000 if he succeeded in having s.e.x with him.

He said: “We met on Facebook and he asked if I can engage in homos.e.x.u.a.l acts with him and I said no, but after much pressure I succumbed.

“He promised to give me N20,000  if I agree to have s.e.x with him. As soon as he came in, I asked for the money and he said he would give me the money after satisfying the s.e.x.u.a.l urge which brought him all the way from Imo State.

“I insisted he must pay me the money he promised. That was how the fight started. He was the first to hit me with a stick and I fell down.

“My younger brother who was with me held him down while I stood up and picked the stick and hit him and he died.”

The suspect however denied dumping him in the bush, but said he and his brother reported themselves to a vigilante group, which took them to the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) in Nanka as there was no police station in the area.

On his part, the suspect’s younger brother, Chidiebere told newsmen that his brother was not a homos.e.x.a.u.l but into comedy and music as well as learning plumbing work in Lagos.

He said he returned from Lagos to the village to attend a burial function.

“My senior brother told me there is one homos.e.x.u.a.l coming to our place who promised to give him N20,000 after the s.e.x.u.a.l act. He said as soon as the man comes, he will just collect his money from him and discharge him.

Shocking! '18m Nigerians infected with hepatitis virus'

Over 18 million Nigerians have been infected with hepatitis virus and most of them are unaware because of ignorance and lack of medical check-up, Prof. Abraham Orkurga Malu of the Department of Medicine, University of Jos, has said.

He said that Nigeria required   N165 billion of drugs to treat hepatitis C, adding that with political will, “the government can afford to solve this disturbing health challenge.”

Prof. Malu, speaking yesterday at a colloquium organised in honour of the President of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Prof. Musa Muhammad Borodo, by the College of   Health  Sciences,   Bayero   University,   Kano   and   Aminu   Kano   Teaching   Hospital, titled: ‘The Burden of Viral Hepatitis, Challenges and Treatment in Nigeria’, held at Marhaba Event Centre, Kano,
said in Nigeria, the knowledge of viral hepatitis remained limited among the public, at-risk population, policy makers, and even health care providers.

Ganduje made me know of Sanusi's dethronement and asked if i will accept him, before he was banished to my state, Nasarawa Governor explains all

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, who hosted the dethroned Emir Muhammad Sanusi in Loko and Awe, spoke on the role he played in the temporary banishment of the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor in his domain.

According to him, his state decided to accommodate the former Emir as a sign of respect and because of his personal relationship with Sanusi as a former colleague in the corporate world.

Sule, who was until his election, Dangote Group’s managing director, said his path and that of the former emir had crossed several times when Sanusi held the fort as the CBN boss.

Following his deposition on March 9 by the Kano State government, Sanusi was first taken to Loko in Nasarawa before he was relocated to Awe.

But a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his release from “detention’. He arrived in Lagos at the weekend.

Sule said yesterday: “I think the reason Nasarawa State has been quiet since the saga is because we were not involved with the politics of the removal of the Emir himself, what led to the removal of the Emir, how he was removed, and the decision to remove him, Nasarawa State was not part of it.

“In fact, the message was all over the social media that he was dethroned but because I hardly check my phone when I’m busy with other things, I didn’t know. It was when the governor now called and my aide brought the phone to me that Governor Ganduje was on line, and we spoke that I knew of what happened.”

Sule said when he picked the call his Kano State counterpart simply told him what had happened and asked if he would like to host the deposed Emir. He said as a “senior” governor to him, he accepted the offer without asking questions.

“The whole world knew they were having issues and all that, but I never knew it would lead to dethronement. And I never asked him what and why it happened. I just said I would accept him. How can I reject him?

“Nasarawa is seen as one of the border states between the deep north and the southern part of the country. If you remember when Nasarawa and Plateau were together, every time you had a governor from the upper Plateau for the Christian population, the lower Plateau, which is Nasarawa will be represented by a Muslim. A lot of the major cities in Nasarawa identify with the deep northern part of the country. If you look at Keffi, Nasawara itself, which is where the name is from and if you look at Lafia people they identify more with the people from Borno. That’s how Nasarawa has always been.”

Responding to a statement credited to a former governor (name withheld), who said the deposed Emir Sanusi was taken to Loko, which the former governor described as “the most backward” part of the country, Sule said that it was “an erroneous statement from people who have very little knowledge about history.”

“Immediately, he was deposed, the governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, called me. And he said, we have just dethroned the emir. And we are thinking about bringing him to Nasarawa State if you’ll accept him. I said, I’ll be more than happy to accept him because this is a global citizen, a highly respected person.

“This is somebody that when I was chief director of Dangote, he was, GMD, of the First Bank. So, we have related as colleagues at the corporate level. When I was deputy group managing director of Dangote, he was the CBN governor. By the time I was GMD of Dangote, he was already an Emir. So, we have related at those levels.

“Speaking from a personal note, my biological father is a traditional ruler and he has been a traditional ruler for the past 50 years. So, I know what it takes at the Emirate Council, about respect you have to give to royalty and all.  And based on that I said yes I’ll be the happiest person to host him in my state.”

According to him, the deposed Emir got royal treatment throughout his stay in the state.

Vatican cancels open Easter celebrations over coronavirus

Pope Francis will not lead any public celebration for Easter due to coronavirus, the Vatican said on Sunday, a move unprecedented in modern times.

“All the Liturgical Celebrations of Holy Week will take place without the physical presence of the faithful,’’ a statement from the Prefecture of the Pontifical Household said.

Before the statement was made public, the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC) said it was considering postponing the Easter pilgrim exercise to Israel due to the pandemic.

Vatican explained that celebrations will still take place, but in ways that have yet to be defined in accordance with anti-virus contagion measures.

Easter, which this year falls on April 12, is the most important Christian holiday, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

There are several ceremonies leading up to it, during the Holy Week.

One of the most solemn is a Good Friday evening procession by Rome’s Colosseum, the Way of the Cross, led by the Pope and attended by thousands of worshippers.

Another key event is the Holy Thursday’s foot-washing ceremony, which Pope Francis has performed in the past in prisons, migrant detention centres and hospices for the disabled.

Two Nigerian doctors die of coronavirus in Italy, London

Two foreign Nigerian medical professionals have died of coronavirus.

They are Italy-based Dr. Olumide Okunuga and a London-based female medical doctor whose name was not given.

Okunuga, according to US-based blog, Irohinoodua, was the President of Egbe Omo Yoruba, Emila Romagna and Vice-President of Yoruba National Community in Italy.

The 64-year-old pathologist from Ikenne Remo, in Ogun State, was a two-time councillor for Modena, Italy where he had lived for 35 years.

He was diagnosed to have contracted COVID-19 in Canada, a country which has recently been hit by the deadly virus.

Irohinoodua, quoted sources as saying that the remains of Okunuga, were asked to be recognised from a distance by his daughter, Dr. Bolanle Okunuga, whose mother is a Caucasian of Italian origin.

The blog reported Canadian health officials as saying that Okunuga’s body would not be released, but had to be cremated.

“His death has left the Yoruba community in Italy totally devastated.

An official of Egbe Omo Yoruba in North America, said: “We lost a great man this weekend. He was an affectionate and decent man who lived for others through his meritorious services since he left Nigeria for Canada many years ago.”

An obituary by the The Yoruba Community in Italy announcing his death went viral on Sunday.

It reads: With Gratitude To Almighty God , the Yoruba community in Italy  regrets to announce the sudden death of 64years old Dr. OLUMIDE OKUNUGA, on Tuesday 10th March 2020.

“He was a Pathologist, an indigene of Ikenne Remo Ogun State, Nigeria. The President of Egbe Omo Yoruba Emilia Romagna and the Vice President of Yoruba National Community Italy. And two time elected councillor for Modena Italy, where he lived for 35years . “

A lady, Ayishat Akanbi, who broke the news of the medical doctor’s death in London, said the deceased was her cousin.

Ayishat warned  blacks to disregard the claim that coronavirus cannot affect them.

She said: “My cousin who is a doctor and in her early 30s died of Coronavirus this morning for anyone irresponsible enough to think black people are immune.

“If you think that being a Nigerian, an African or black makes you immune to the now spreading and dreaded Coronavirus, then, you may just have been lying to yourself.”

Kebbi 'attack' on President: DSS to sanction officers

The Department of State Services (DSS) says it will sanction its personnel for negligence over security breach in the futile attempt made by one Mohammed Guddare to have unauthorised handshake with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Dr Peter Afunanya, the Public Relations Officer of the service said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

“The service has reviewed the video of the incident and is taking measures against its personnel found to have been negligent in their duties,” he said.

He said the intruder made overzealous but futile attempt to have an unauthorised handshake with the President thus breaching security protocols.

Afunanya said Guddare was stopped by security details and arrested for thorough investigation.

According to him, preliminary investigation has revealed that he is not a hostile person, but an overzealous enthusiast of the president.

APC crisis: Tinubu faults moves to oust Oshiomhole

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has broken his silence on moves to oust National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Faulting the moves, Tinubu said those behind them are infected by “the 2023 virus”.

In a statement he personally signed on Sunday afternoon, the former Lagos Governor said: “While Corona has been presently contained in Nigeria, we must be alert to another sickness that seems rampant within a certain segment of society. That sickness is old Ambition-virus 2023. This illness afflicts many in the political class along with their allies in the media.

“Those touched by this malady find that their ability to tell time and discern the difference between the present and the future has been strongly impaired. The carriers of this sickness are confused as to the very season our nation now finds itself.

“They conflate things, which no sensible person would conflate. The primary symptom of their malady is the driving tendency to believe the events of 2023 will be decided before we even exit the year 2020.

“Consequently, everything they say and do is geared toward obsessive jockeying for position to control and manipulate a race still three years away. In doing so, they recklessly undermine the very party which they claim to serve and weaken the administration of President Buhari to which they claim to be loyal. They line up to run a race for which the track has not even yet been constructed.

“Put another way, they seek to pluck the fruit before the seed is even planted. As such, their actions border on the pathological. True, ambition is inherent in human endeavour. Without it, nothing great is achieved. However, strong ambition applied in the wrong way has never done anything positive.

“At best, it results in confusion. Usually, its results in something worse. No matter how great one’s ambition and how able one may be, nobody can rush or speed time. That is beyond the realm of human capacity. To do so is to contest against fate itself. When it ends, such a contest rarely ends well.

“In a well-structured society, people come to understand that the time for politics is seasonal; it is periodic. The responsibilities of governance are what is perpetual. Many of our politicians sadly have inverted this reality.  Politics and electioneering are secondary to governance for they are but tools of governance, the platforms by which one demonstrates his or her worthiness to lead a great people.

“The more a person obsesses over and constantly engages in political manoeuvring is a warning sign. Not only is he prone to the 2023 virus. He likely has little to offer in the way of good governance. He wants to hold public office that you might serve him not he serve you.

“For if he had adequately studied and been acquainted with the ways and means of progressive governance, he would be focused on that important task at the present moment. He certainly would not drown himself and all around him in harmful political intrigue.”

Stating that Oshiomhole has worked tirelessly for the APC, Tinubu continued: “The plotters launched their attack solely because they perceive the chairman as an obstacle to their 2023 ambitions. People went to court knowing full well the party constitution prohibits such action because these people had not yet exhausted all internal disciplinary procedures.

“We even had a national deputy secretary improperly call for a NEC meeting on the basis that he believed himself the acting national chairman. Clearly, this man would not have summoned the temerity to make such a move had he not been instigated by powerful individuals who he thought would reward or, at least, protect him for committing the wrongful act.

“Those engaged in these manoeuvres see themselves as clever or cunning. They do so because they only understand the mean craft of political intrigue. They have yet to understand the value and long-term utility of democratic governance. Thus, they embark on the strangest of quest. They would rather dismantle and weaken the institutional core of their party just to gain control of that weakened edifice in order to pilfer the party nomination, which they crave. This is more than sad.

“Many of us expended sweat, tears, toil and sleepless nights to build this party. Our personal sacrifices were not insignificant. We built this party not simply as a vehicle for personal ambition. We built the party because we saw it as perhaps the only enduring hope to bring progressive governance to this nation. Those who now seek to abuse the party by using it as their personal device do it great harm.

“They should not be allowed to sacrifice this collective enterprise at the altar of their self-aggrandizement. Somehow, some way they should find in themselves the bearing to adhere to the democratic spirit on which the party was founded. To be an APC member means more than merely carrying a membership card. It means to believe in a set of ideals and principles geared to our highest purpose as a party and a nation.”

He tackled the anti-Oshiomhole elements within APC, stating they were distracting President Muhammadu Buhari from fixing the nation. According to him: “In a broader context, those afflicted with the 2023 virus do a grave disservice to President Buhari and his administration. They should be trying their best to help the president. Instead of seeing President Buhari as our present leader and commander-in-chief, their sole contemplation is upon his eventual exit. Yet, not even a full year has passed since his second inaugural. How can they be committed to helping him realise his mandate when the fullness of their gaze is affixed to seizing this very mandate for themselves?

The President is faced with many challenges. He is fighting hard on security to keep the population safe. He is pushing for economic reforms that will augur future sustainable growth. His disdain for corruption remains unwavering.  Add to it now the Corona crisis and its resultant social as well as economic impact. Politicians express loyalty to him but the words of too many of our politicians are like butter under a burning sun; they melt quickly away. Better to be loyal in deed. Instead of trying to manipulate party and other mechanisms solely to their political gain, it is time to shelve political intrigue for the time being. It is time for all party members to truly see what is at stake and work with Mr. President for the collective good of the nation.

This means we must rally around President Buhari. Instead of everyone saying they are working for the party and nation but going their separate ways based on their selfish designs, we must help him build a stronger national consensus on policies that will ensure safety and bring greater prosperity. If need be and when called upon, we must offer ideas and suggestions that move policy and progress forward. This is the time for governance. It is not the moment to bring the politics of 2023 into 2020. In due course, 2023 shall come. Nothing can prevent it. However, that time is not today.  If we are earnest, the present offers sufficient work and challenges for us without trying to add to it by rushing the future. Let us dedicate our energies to helping President Buhari win the present. In this way, you better secure the future for the nation, the party and even for whatever personal ambitions you may nurture.

I have said what is on my mind in hopes that some people may leave the 2023 frenzy and commit themselves to the harder yet more rewarding task of improving progressive governance, whether within the party or at the local, state or federal levels.  Yet, I am not so naïve to think all will heed this counsel.  The stubborn, those obsessed with the obsession of their ambitions, will ignore all advice.

“They will constantly pull 2023 into all that occurs in 2020. Their vision is blurred and judgment made faulty by their ailment. We are democrats so we cannot physically quarantine them. However, we can quarantine their ideas and antics by not falling prey to them.  This is the best way we help President Buhari fulfil his mandate and inoculate our party and the nation from grave folly.”

Italian newspaper prints 10 pages of obituaries in town hit by coronavirus

A video shows how an Italian newspaper went from having one and a half pages of obituaries to ten in just a month.

On February 9, there were only a few to print, but by March 13 there were dozens in Bergamo’s daily newspaper, in the Lombardy region.

Silvia Merler took video of both editions of L’Eco di Bergamo side by side, showing the contrast as Italy’s death toll soared.

By this morning, more than 1,800 people in the country had died after contracting Covid-19.

Mr Merler said: ‘This is the daily newspaper of Bergamo, one of the epidemic hotspot in Italy.

‘Please, stay at home and show this to anyone who tells you Covid-19 “is just like the flu”.’

Italy has now been on lockdown for almost a week.

The transport ministry banned passengers from taking ferries to the island of Sardinia and banned overnight train trips – which many in the north had been taking to reach homes and families in the south.

PrEP drug that prevents HIV infection will finally be made available

A drug which prevents HIV infections is to be made available by the National Health Service this year in a move to try and eliminate new transmissions of the virus within the decade.

PrEP – or pre-exposure prophylaxis – will be made routinely available to patients deemed to be at greater risk of catching HIV from April.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: ‘We are rolling out PrEP and making it available across the country – with evidence showing it almost completely eradicates the chances of getting HIV. This will benefit tens of thousands of people’s lives, and drive us towards our ambition of zero HIV transmissions in this decade.’

Having HIV was once a ‘death sentence’ and it still has ‘a devastating impact on so many lives across the country’, he said. NHS England will cover the costs of the drug, having carried out a three-year study involving more than 20,000 people.

The Department of Health said local authorities will be given funding from April, with £16 million to be made available in 2020/21, to commission services in England for the first time to patients.

Musician and Aids activist Sir Elton John told the Sunday Times the decision was the ‘right’ one. He added: ‘Taking PrEP prevents HIV from being passed on, which is truly incredible.

‘It is the right decision for the UK Government to roll this out more widely to minimise the spread of this disease so more people are protected – which is critical in fighting any epidemic.’

PrEP involves HIV negative people taking antiretroviral medicine, which works by stopping the virus replicating in the body.

PrEP is already available in Scotland to people who are considered to be at high risk of contracting HIV, and a trial of the drug is taking place in Wales.
.According to the Terrence Higgins Trust, most recent estimates suggest there were around 103,800 people living with HIV in the UK , and around 7% of those are not aware they are HIV positive.

New diagnoses of HIV in the UK fell to their lowest level in almost two decades in 2018 – 4,484 people – due to the success of preventative measures, Public Health England said.

These include HIV testing, condom provision, and wider use of PrEP.

The roll-out comes after a long-running battle by campaign groups to ‘secure a guarantee of proper access to this game-changer for HIV prevention in England’, chief executive of the Terrence Higgins Trust, Ian Green, said.

Deborah Gold, the National Aids Trust chief executive, said: ‘Routine commissioning of PrEP brings us one step closer to our goal of ending new HIV transmissions by 2030, but many more lie ahead.’

Professor Noel Gill, of Public Health England, said that PrEP is ‘highly effective at protecting against HIV’ when it is taken consistently and efforts to eliminate HIV transmission by 2030 depend ‘on making PrEP readily available to all at higher risk of acquiring HIV’.

Ebonyi teenager defiles five minors in one week

An 18-year-old boy, Nwafor Jacob, was on Friday remanded in a correctional centre by an Ebonyi State Magistrates’ Court in Abakaliki for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old minor.

The suspect, who was alleged to have serially engaged in the act for one week, was also alleged to have had the carnal knowledge of four other minors.

It was gathered that three out of the five victims were siblings and the accused defiled them between January 19 and January 25, 2020.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Sebastine Alumona, told the court that Jacob had been in the habit of pouncing on the victims to defile them, while they were asleep.

He was arraigned on one count of unlawful sexual intercourse.

The charge read, “That you, Nwafor Jacob, on January 25, 2020, at Onunwafor village, Umuoghara, Ezza North Local Government Area, in the Abakaliki Magisterial District, did have unlawful sexual intercourse with a 10-year-old girl and four other minors, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 34 (2) of the Ebonyi State Child Right Law and Related Matters, 2010.”

The counsel for the accused, Mr G. N. Ota, applied to the court for his client to be admitted to bail.

The presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs Nnenna Onuoha, said the court lacked the jurisdiction to adjudicate on the matter.

He directed that the accused be remanded in the Abakaliki correctional centre, while his case file should be transferred to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for necessary legal advice.

The matter was adjourned till March 27, 2020.

CBN to invest N22bn in entertainment industry

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said it has concluded plans to invest at least N22 billion in the entertainment industry and in software production in Nigeria.

The CBN Director of Corporate Communications, Isaac Okorafor, said yesterday in Uyo during a One-Day Interactive Session with Stakeholders on the 5-year policy thrust of the Central Bank of Nigeria, adding that the move was to add more strength to the industry and censure piracy and ensure originality.

He said that CBN has also decided to resurrect the textile industry and also fund the entire value chain of the industry, beginning from the farmers to the garment makers.

“But we have decided that we must resurrect the textile Industry. We have started by funding the farmers who plant the cotton.

Coronavirus: Kim Kardashian's daughter North builds quarantine house to protect her and Kanye

As the deadly coronavirus continues to spread across the world, North West is doing everything she can to protect her parents.

North's mother Kim, 39, has been incredibly vocal about taking the necessary precautions to avoid contracting the virus on her social media accounts, and it seems as though her preaching has rubbed off on her eldest child.

Taking to her Instagram stories on Friday, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star shared a video of the six-year-old's coronavirus creaton which consisted of a cardboard doll house.

Inside the adorable quarantined abode, North kept teddy bear versions of her parents safe as they cuddled up surrounded by blankets and throws while avoiding the outside world.

Above the door of the cardboard box house were the words 'North West' spelled out in black stickers.

Inside the house, North made sure to add her finishing touches as she added colourful drawings with her name on.

Sharing her daughter's cute creation with her Instagram followers, Kim explained that North is in a habit of regularly making doll houses from random boxes.

She told: "North and her houses. She made a quarantined section for Kim and Kanye".

The mother-of-four then revealed a square cutout on the wall, adding: "With windows, so we can look out."

What's most amusing about the whole scenario though is the fact that North used rag dolls made to look like Kim and Kanye, which were sitting at a tiny table with a bottle of hand sanitizer on top.

'Gas cylinders hit by a truck caused explosion in Abule Ado'

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) says that a gas explosion caused the blast which rocked Abule Ado area of Lagos State.

In a statement by the Group General Manager, Public Affairs Division, Dr Kennie Obateru, on Sunday, the blast occurred after a truck hit some gas cylinders stacked in a gas processing plant located near the corporation’s System 2B pipeline right of way.

He added that preliminary findings indicated that the impact of the explosion was huge that it led to the collapse of nearby houses and damaged some NNPC pipelines.

Dr Obateru said when the corporation heard about the explosion, it halted ongoing pumping operation on the Atlas Cove-Mosimi pipeline which was active at the time of the incident, while efforts are being made to curtail the fire.

The NNPC spokesman appealed to members of the public and residents of the affected communities to remain calm and assured that the temporary shutdown of the petroleum products pipeline would not affect the normal supply of products to Lagos and its environs.
