Ogun governor disowns commissioner for attacking Osoba

Ogun state governor, Dapo Abiodun, has disowned his Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Oludare Kehinde, who reportedly castigated a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aremo Olusegun Osoba.

The 36-year-old Commissioner was quoted by an online news platform to have described Osoba, who was governor of Ogun state, as “a leader without successor.”

Daily Trust reports that the verbal diatribe unsettled the governor’s camp as Osoba’s loyalists who had kicked against the composition of the state cabinet, felt the youthful commissioner was speaking the mind of his boss.

Apparently rattled by the development, Governor Abiodun on Tuesday in a strongly worded statement described Kehinde’s comment as “unauthorised, infantile and distasteful.”

“Needlessly, to say, the Commissioner is on his own,” Abiodun said in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin.

According to the statement, the governor tenders an unreserved apology to the former governor for the comments and reiterates that “those words (by the commissioner) are not a reflection of the person, standing, and background of an esteemed and much revered Aremo Olusegun Osoba.”

The governor, however, said the commissioner has been reprimanded, while Osoba “has demonstrated the fatherly and reassuring understanding of a leader, he truly is.”

“For emphasis, Prince Dapo Abiodun totally disassociates himself and the Administration from the unsavoury comments of the Commissioner and reassures all that this unfortunate incident will not in any way detract from the very cordial relationship between Baba and himself.

“It is gratifying that this issue has been discussed with Baba and as usual, he has demonstrated the fatherly and reassuring understanding of a leader, he truly is. Dr. Oludare Sunday Kehinde has accordingly been reprimanded.

“Nonetheless, His Excellency therefore tenders an unreserved apology to Chief Olusegun Osoba for the comments made by the Commissioner and reiterates that they are not a reflection of the person, standing, and background of an esteemed and much revered Aremo Olusegun Osoba. He extends his apologies to all other leaders affected by the diatribe,” Abiodun said.

Euro 2020 postponed until next summer

Euro 2020 has been postponed by one year until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

European football's governing body made the decision during an emergency video conference involving major stakeholders on Tuesday.

The tournament, due to take place from 12 June-12 July this summer, will now run from 11 June to 11 July next year.

The postponement provides a chance for European leagues that have been suspended to now be completed.

By moving the European Championship, Uefa now has a clash with the Women's European Championship, which is due to be held in England in 2021, beginning on 7 July.

The Nations League and the European Under-21 Championships are also scheduled to take place next summer.

Uefa said all three events will be "rescheduled accordingly", but it is currently unclear if that involves minor tweaks to dates, or large-scale postponements.

In delaying Euro 2020, Uefa said it wanted to avoid "placing any unnecessary pressure on national public services" of its 12 host countries, as well as helping allow domestic competitions to be finished.

"We are at the helm of a sport that vast numbers of people live and breathe that has been laid low by this invisible and fast-moving opponent," said Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin.

"It is at times like these, that the football community needs to show responsibility, unity, solidarity and altruism.

"The health of fans, staff and players has to be our number one priority and in that spirit, Uefa tabled a range of options so that competitions can finish this season safely and I am proud of the response of my colleagues across European football.

"There was a real spirit of co-operation, with everyone recognising that they had to sacrifice something in order to achieve the best result."

Ceferin said it was important Uefa "led the process and made the biggest sacrifice", adding it comes "at a huge cost" but "purpose over profit has been our guiding principle in taking this decision for the good of European football as a whole".

Coronavirus: Chad shuts airports despite record of no cases

African countries have been among the last to be hit by the global coronavirus epidemic but as cases rise, many nations are now taking strict measures to block the deadly illness.

Watching from afar as the disaster unfolds in Asia and Europe – where many are suffering the consequences of being slow to act – some African countries have wasted no time in taking drastic measures.

Air traffic, in particular, has been hard hit as nations across the continent realised their first cases had come from citizens returning from travel abroad in infected countries.

In comparison to many countries in the west, measures have been decisive and very strict.

Chad, where no cases have been reported, also shut its airports and borders with affected Sudan and the Central African Republic.

Morocco has stopped all international flights “until further notice” aside from special planes authorised to repatriate European tourists.

Somalia, a country riven by decades of conflict, also banned all international flights – including for cargo – after confirming its first case. Humanitarian flights, however, will be allowed to proceed.

Zambia, Nigeria, Ghana and Equatorial Guinea are among those insisting on self-quarantine for travellers from high-risk countries.

Germany Big Brother participants unaware of coronavirus

Some of the last people in the world to find out about the rapid spread of Covid-19 are a group of 14 men and women sitting in a house in Cologne, western Germany, where they are competing in the country’s 13th season of the reality TV show Big Brother.

The majority of the housemates have been in isolation since 6 February, when news of the novel coronavirus was only just trickling out of Wuhan in China. Since then, they have been cut off from updates from the outside world, except once, when the show introduced four more housemates on 6 March, three days before Germany would report its first death from the virus.

In 2001, the producers of the American edition of Big Brother had to interrupt the show’s second season to tell the final three contestants about 9/11. Even then, the decision to break the news was only prompted by the fact that one housemate had a relative missing in the aftermath of the attacks.

The German residents themselves are conducting an accidental experiment in social distancing: a twist to the format sees the contestants split between two different houses.

One, a lavish modernist “glasshouse”, has a hot tub and luxury food; the other, the “blockhouse”, offers only the bare necessities.

Big Brother Germany, a 20th-anniversary revival of the show after a five-year hiatus, isn’t the only iteration of Big Brother currently conducting an accidental quarantine: contestants on Big Brother Brazil, who moved in in January, and Big Brother Canada, who entered their house on 4 March, have been left equally clueless.

One clip, from Canada, shows the contestants discussing the sudden absence of a live audience for evictions from the house: when the first member left, just five days in, the crowd was audible from within the house, but by 14 March, when the second was evicted, the silence was noticeable.

Nigerian doctors go on strike amid coronavirus crisis

The Association of Resident Doctors(ARD), Abuja Chapter has embarked on strike shortly after the third case of Coronavirus was announced in Lagos.

The group announced on Tuesday that it will be embarking on san indefinite strike due to the government’s failure to pay doctors’ salaries for two months.

In a statement signed by its president, Aigbovo Roland, the group states that they arrived at the decision after much deliberation.

He explained that embers of the group are facing serious financial difficulties over the non-payment of their wages adding that despite several warnings, the FCT administration has done nothing to solve the issue.

Aigbovo pointed out that there have been salary shortfalls since the migration to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

He threatened that health workers who are affected by the salary deductions will join the mass action within 48 hours if their demands are not met.

The strike action is coming at a very critical time when the world is facing a serious health problem. The deadly coronavirus is spreading fast with a third case confirmed in Lagos on Tuesday. A 30-year-old woman who recently returned from the UK tested positive for the deadly COVID-19 virus. She has since been quarantined.

Two members of WHO staff infected with coronavirus

An official from the World Health Organization said today that two staff members have been confirmed as infected with coronavirus.

The body leading the global fight against the coronavirus pandemic said both employees began showing symptoms at home and were then tested.

News of the pair's diagnosis came as the WHO regional office for Europe said there is a need for bold measures in all European countries, calling the continent the 'epicentre' of the new pandemic.

These new WHO cases are the first at the Geneva-based organisation and follow a confirmed case at the UN office in Geneva as well one at the World Trade Organization last week.

It was not clear if the infected staff were working in the coronavirus response.
Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, told a press conference: 'Every country, with no exceptions, needs to take their boldest actions to stop or slow down the virus threat.

'Thinking that 'this does not concern me,' is not an option,' Kluge added.

I am tired of my wife’s adulterous life, man tells court

Taiwo Oyedeji, an Ibadan-based vehicle dealer, on Tuesday told a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan to dissolve his 17-year-old marriage to his wife, Aminat, because he could no longer afford to share her with other men.

Giving testimony before Chief Ademola Odunade, the President of the court, Taiwo, a resident of Fatusi area in Ibadan, said that he filed the suit because he could no longer cope with a wife “who had made herself a public tap from where all men fetch water.

“When I suspected that Aminat was engaged in extra-marital affairs, I made her understand that I knew, but rather than stop, she had more confidence.

“She continued to return home deep in the night and one day I caught her red-handed.

“That night, Aminat put her mobile phone on silence and went away but a certain number called her phone over and over.

“I realised that it was the same phone number I had always warned her about.

“Then, I told our son who was there with me to bring the phone.

“In a disguise, I changed my voice and spoke like Aminat and the man believed that he was talking to his concubine.

“In the conversation, the man said that since the last time he and my wife enjoyed each other, he had travelled down to Ile-Ife and that he would soon be returning to Ibadan so that they can both continue their escapades.

“In fact, when I confronted her, Aminat smashed a stick on my neck,” Taiwo said.

He added that his wife went as far as reporting him to a radio station in Ibadan so that the presenter of a certain program could help to beg him.

However, the respondent denied the allegation leveled against her and consented to the suit.

Aminat, a trader, argued that her husband was instead, an unrepented cheat.

“In spite the fact that Taiwo cannot substantiate any of his allegations against me, he is still doing everything possible to eliminate me.

“I don’t know where he got the evidence he is talking about from.

“On that day, I just saw that he came rushing into the house from the venue of his birthday ceremony, violently destroying things in the house and even breaking the ceiling to gain access into my room.

“Worst still, Taiwo attempted to axe me to death, were it not for the timely intervention of people around.

“Taiwo is too troublesome for me and I am equally frustrated,” Aminat stated.

In his judgment, Odunade dissolved the union and granted custody of the first child to the plaintiff and the last two to the defendant.

He directed Taiwo to pay N10,000 as the children’s monthly feeding allowance, in addition to being responsible for their education and other welfare.

Abule Ado explosion beyond pipeline accident, Gani Adams tells Governemnt as he visits scene

Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has urged the Lagos State Government and Federal Government to conduct a thorough investigation of the Sunday explosion in the Abule Ado area of Lagos State to determine what really happened.

The OPC leader who is also the immediate past chairman of the community development association of the affected area visited the scene to inspect the level of damage in the area on Monday.

Adams while addressing journalists said the explosion is beyond pipeline accident, describing the level of damage as a “collateral and devastating loss, which is similar to that of Syria and Iraq.

In his words, “I have a house here and I lived here for 15 years before I left for Omole Phase 11. What happened here is serious collateral damages, it’s devastating.

“What happened here we can compare it to what happened in Syria or Iraq,” he said.

“The governor of the state has been here this morning (Monday) and he has done the right thing by moving the sum of 2billion naira to compensate those who are victims. But I will appeal to the state government and federal government to do a thorough investigation of the incident in this area because I don’t believe it is from a pipeline explosion.

“I have lived here for 15 years, I have witnessed two episodes of that nature, it doesn’t shake the foundation of a house. The information at my disposal since yesterday was that when the blast came it affected Agbaara, from here to Agbaara, Surulere, and Badagry.

“So if anybody is trying to explain to us this is a pipeline explosion, you have to think twice before issuing that statement. I am suspecting something beyond that but the government has to give us the true information about what happened here,” he added.

Adams also sympathize with the victims of the accident and urged the government to give its citizens adequate information in case of future occurrences.

“The victims that died in this incident cannot be quantified. In the media yesterday, we read 15 but from this morning, it’s more than 50 and human life is precious. As a government, you have the right to protect life and property so you need to give us adequate information so that other areas can prepare in case something like that wants to reoccur.”

“I thank Lagos govt for responding quickly to the need of the people and giving them hope, although no amount can resolve what has happened here on Sunday, but for him coming here and even promised them that most of the damages will be taken care of. I think that’s the less hope we are still expecting.

“The most unfortunate part of it is that Elder Obi acting chairman of the landlord association died with his wife and two children and a lot of people were affected. This is unfortunate.”

Evil wind brought coronavirus and will expire in 21 days - Dunamis Pastor, Paul Enenche

The Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Dr. Paul Enenche on Sunday, led his congregation in a torrential prayer against the outbreak of coronavirus.

Leading his congregation in a brutal prayer against deadly virus, Pastor Enenche said its tenure would expire within 21 days.

He said, “We want to agree together to curse the demon of coronavirus officially. He (God) said whatever we bound on earth is bound in heaven and whatever we lose on earth is lose in heaven, so we want to officially bound the virus called corona.

“I’m sure Ebola must have told corona not to come to Nigeria, this is because when it came, they boiled it.

“I heard that there are countries today where nobody is going to any church. That devil is a bastard. Like in Italy, I heard there is a total lockdown. Over 900 catholic churches and other denominations are under lock and keys due to the plague.

“People have been barred from traveling in and out of their countries because of the virus. That means if people have any emergency medical case, they can’t go.

“President Donald Trump of America declared today as fasting and prayer against corona virus and we are also declaring enough is enough for that devil. His tenure has expired. For every child of God here and every child of God watching me from all over the world, we don’t belong to any situation of plague.

Exodus 15:26 says. “And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.”

“In the land of Egypt, at a point locusts came by the east wind and when the suffering became too much and the Lord wanted to take it away, he brought west wind and wiped them away.

“After reading Exodus 10:12-18, I realized that a wind of evil brought this corona virus. And we pray that the wind of the lord would sweep it away.

“From today, between now and 21 days, we make a demand for immediate answer on this matter.

“We join forces with every believer around the world praying now that corona virus; your tenure from today expires. We curse you to your root. The wind of the Lord will come and blow you away.

“You know it exploded from Far East, China and is now majorly flowing in the west but it is ended. As God replied Daniel within 21 days, we receive immediate answer to this mysterious plague in Jesus’ name.”

Some of the kidnapped victims of the Saturday attack were said to be students who were on their way back to Birnin-Gwari from Kaduna after writing the university matriculation examination, UTME.

According to witnesses, one of the victims killed by the bandits was Ibrahim Idris, the driver of a former House of Representatives member, Adamu Shekarau.
