Cesc Fabregas recreates Eddie Murphy scene during coronavirus lockdown (video)

Former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas showed he's not about to let the coronavirus get the better of him by shouting a friendly hello to his neighbours.

The Spaniard, 32, who now resides in Monaco, took to his plush balcony to greet nearby residents via a famous line from 'Coming to America'.

In the video posted on his Instagram account, Fabregas can be seen striding out on to the balcony overlooking columns of hotels and apartments.

A dock with some small boats and a few larger yachts can be seen in the background of the shot.

Fabregas walks out, throws both arms up into the air and the 32-year-old then appears to shout: "Good morning my neighbours!"

An imaginary resident shouts: "Hey, f*** you!" as it becomes clear that the audio has in fact been dubbed over the top of the video.

Fabregas appears to reply: "Yes, yes! F*** you too!" before he moves away from the balcony.

The line was made famous by John Landis' Coming to America, released in 1988. The line is spoken by Eddie Murphy, who plays the character of Prince Akeem.

Scammers use coronavirus to trick fearful South Africans

South Africa’s central bank has warned citizens against scammers visiting homes to “recall” banknotes and coins they said were contaminated with the novel coronavirus.

The criminals carried fake identification badges and provided false receipts to victims, who were told they could exchange the slips for “clean” cash at any bank.

The bank said in a statement issued late Monday that it had “neither withdrawn any banknotes or coins nor issued any instruction to hand in banknotes or coins that may be contaminated”.

“There currently is no evidence that the COVID-19 virus is transmitted through the use of banknotes and coins,” said the statement.

To date South Africa has recorded 62 cases, the second-highest number of coronavirus infections in Africa after Egypt.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the closing of schools and banned public gatherings after numbers more than tripled over the weekend.

Foreign nationals from highly-affected countries will also be denied entry from Wednesday, as the majority of South Africa’s cases had recently travelled abroad.

If you are a passenger on flight BA 75 stay at home, health commissioner warns

The Lagos State Commissioner of Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, has advised those on the British Airways flight that arrived in Lagos on March 13 to stay at home or isolate themselves for 14 days.

The Commissioner made the announcement on Tuesday through his Twitter handle following the confirmation of another case of Coronavirus in Lagos.

This is the third case of the virus in Nigeria and a new case-independent of the index case.

The patient is a 30-year-old Nigerian female who returned from the United Kingdom on March 13, observed self-isolation and developed symptoms, thereby testing positive.

She is now receiving treatment in the Mainland at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba.

China deports American journalists in retaliatory move

China has ordered American journalists at the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal to leave the country in the Communist government’s most severe move against foreign media in recent memory.

The foreign ministry said in a statement the measure was in retaliation for Washington’s decision to cut the number of Chinese nationals allowed to work for Chinese state-run media on American soil.

Starting from Wednesday, the journalists, whose press cards were due to expire later this year, must notify the foreign ministry within four days and hand back their credentials within 10 days, the ministry said.

“They will not be allowed to continue working as journalists in the People’s Republic of China, including its Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions,” the statement said.

China has already expelled three other Wall Street Journal reporters -- two Americans and one Australian, over what it deemed a racist headline by the US newspaper.

But those expulsions had also been seen by some observers as a tit-for-tat move over the US decision to reclassify Chinese state-run media operating in the United States as foreign missions.

Beijing on Wednesday also ordered Voice of America, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and Time magazine to declare in writing their staff, finances, operations and real estate in China.

Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson released from hospital after coronavirus treatment

Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have been released from the Australian hospital where they were in isolation since testing positive for the coronavirus last week, their son Chet said.

“A quick update on my folks: They’re out of the hospital,” Chet said in an Instagram video.

“They’re still self-quarantined obviously, but they’re feeling a lot better, so that’s a relief,” he said.

The multiple Oscar-winning actor was on the Gold Coast near Brisbane to film an Elvis Presley biopic directed by Australian Baz Luhrmann when he and Wilson, both 63, came down with the disease.

Wilson, a singer-songwriter, had given concerts in Sydney and Brisbane before testing positive for COVID-19 and Australian authorities have been tracking the couple’s contacts to identify any other people who mayhave been infected.

Chet Hanks urged people not to panic over the virus and wished anyone else infected “a swift and speedy recovery”.

Australia has so far confirmed nearly 400 cases of coronavirus, with five deaths from the disease.

Manchester Arena bombing: Hashem Abedi guilty of 22 murders

The brother of Manchester Arena bomber Salman Abedi has been found guilty of murdering 22 people.

Hashem Abedi had denied helping to plan the "sudden and lethal" blast which killed or injured "nearly 1,000".

The Old Bailey heard the pair worked together to source materials used in the suicide blast after an Ariana Grande show at the venue.

Prosecutors said Hashem was "jointly responsible" with his brother for the attack on 22 May 2017.

The Manchester-born siblings "stood shoulder to shoulder" in the plot, with younger sibling Hashem "just as guilty of murder" as the bomber himself, the court heard.

Hashem, 22, was also found guilty of one count of attempted murder, encompassing the remaining injured, and conspiring to cause explosions.

He was not in court for the unanimous verdicts after he dismissed his legal team last week and decided to take no further part in the trial.

Some of the victims' family members burst into tears as the verdicts were delivered after the seven-week trial.

Figen Murray, mother of victim Martyn Hett, said while the verdicts bring her "comfort to know the British justice system has played its role...it doesn't give us closure".

His father, Paul Hett, added that while "this verdict will not bring back the 22 victims murdered by Salman and Hashem Abedi," he said it will provide "an overwhelming sense of justice to all those affected by this heinous crime".

Ogun governor disowns commissioner for attacking Osoba

Ogun state governor, Dapo Abiodun, has disowned his Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Oludare Kehinde, who reportedly castigated a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aremo Olusegun Osoba.

The 36-year-old Commissioner was quoted by an online news platform to have described Osoba, who was governor of Ogun state, as “a leader without successor.”

Daily Trust reports that the verbal diatribe unsettled the governor’s camp as Osoba’s loyalists who had kicked against the composition of the state cabinet, felt the youthful commissioner was speaking the mind of his boss.

Apparently rattled by the development, Governor Abiodun on Tuesday in a strongly worded statement described Kehinde’s comment as “unauthorised, infantile and distasteful.”

“Needlessly, to say, the Commissioner is on his own,” Abiodun said in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin.

According to the statement, the governor tenders an unreserved apology to the former governor for the comments and reiterates that “those words (by the commissioner) are not a reflection of the person, standing, and background of an esteemed and much revered Aremo Olusegun Osoba.”

The governor, however, said the commissioner has been reprimanded, while Osoba “has demonstrated the fatherly and reassuring understanding of a leader, he truly is.”

“For emphasis, Prince Dapo Abiodun totally disassociates himself and the Administration from the unsavoury comments of the Commissioner and reassures all that this unfortunate incident will not in any way detract from the very cordial relationship between Baba and himself.

“It is gratifying that this issue has been discussed with Baba and as usual, he has demonstrated the fatherly and reassuring understanding of a leader, he truly is. Dr. Oludare Sunday Kehinde has accordingly been reprimanded.

“Nonetheless, His Excellency therefore tenders an unreserved apology to Chief Olusegun Osoba for the comments made by the Commissioner and reiterates that they are not a reflection of the person, standing, and background of an esteemed and much revered Aremo Olusegun Osoba. He extends his apologies to all other leaders affected by the diatribe,” Abiodun said.

Euro 2020 postponed until next summer

Euro 2020 has been postponed by one year until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

European football's governing body made the decision during an emergency video conference involving major stakeholders on Tuesday.

The tournament, due to take place from 12 June-12 July this summer, will now run from 11 June to 11 July next year.

The postponement provides a chance for European leagues that have been suspended to now be completed.

By moving the European Championship, Uefa now has a clash with the Women's European Championship, which is due to be held in England in 2021, beginning on 7 July.

The Nations League and the European Under-21 Championships are also scheduled to take place next summer.

Uefa said all three events will be "rescheduled accordingly", but it is currently unclear if that involves minor tweaks to dates, or large-scale postponements.

In delaying Euro 2020, Uefa said it wanted to avoid "placing any unnecessary pressure on national public services" of its 12 host countries, as well as helping allow domestic competitions to be finished.

"We are at the helm of a sport that vast numbers of people live and breathe that has been laid low by this invisible and fast-moving opponent," said Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin.

"It is at times like these, that the football community needs to show responsibility, unity, solidarity and altruism.

"The health of fans, staff and players has to be our number one priority and in that spirit, Uefa tabled a range of options so that competitions can finish this season safely and I am proud of the response of my colleagues across European football.

"There was a real spirit of co-operation, with everyone recognising that they had to sacrifice something in order to achieve the best result."

Ceferin said it was important Uefa "led the process and made the biggest sacrifice", adding it comes "at a huge cost" but "purpose over profit has been our guiding principle in taking this decision for the good of European football as a whole".

Coronavirus: Chad shuts airports despite record of no cases

African countries have been among the last to be hit by the global coronavirus epidemic but as cases rise, many nations are now taking strict measures to block the deadly illness.

Watching from afar as the disaster unfolds in Asia and Europe – where many are suffering the consequences of being slow to act – some African countries have wasted no time in taking drastic measures.

Air traffic, in particular, has been hard hit as nations across the continent realised their first cases had come from citizens returning from travel abroad in infected countries.

In comparison to many countries in the west, measures have been decisive and very strict.

Chad, where no cases have been reported, also shut its airports and borders with affected Sudan and the Central African Republic.

Morocco has stopped all international flights “until further notice” aside from special planes authorised to repatriate European tourists.

Somalia, a country riven by decades of conflict, also banned all international flights – including for cargo – after confirming its first case. Humanitarian flights, however, will be allowed to proceed.

Zambia, Nigeria, Ghana and Equatorial Guinea are among those insisting on self-quarantine for travellers from high-risk countries.

Germany Big Brother participants unaware of coronavirus

Some of the last people in the world to find out about the rapid spread of Covid-19 are a group of 14 men and women sitting in a house in Cologne, western Germany, where they are competing in the country’s 13th season of the reality TV show Big Brother.

The majority of the housemates have been in isolation since 6 February, when news of the novel coronavirus was only just trickling out of Wuhan in China. Since then, they have been cut off from updates from the outside world, except once, when the show introduced four more housemates on 6 March, three days before Germany would report its first death from the virus.

In 2001, the producers of the American edition of Big Brother had to interrupt the show’s second season to tell the final three contestants about 9/11. Even then, the decision to break the news was only prompted by the fact that one housemate had a relative missing in the aftermath of the attacks.

The German residents themselves are conducting an accidental experiment in social distancing: a twist to the format sees the contestants split between two different houses.

One, a lavish modernist “glasshouse”, has a hot tub and luxury food; the other, the “blockhouse”, offers only the bare necessities.

Big Brother Germany, a 20th-anniversary revival of the show after a five-year hiatus, isn’t the only iteration of Big Brother currently conducting an accidental quarantine: contestants on Big Brother Brazil, who moved in in January, and Big Brother Canada, who entered their house on 4 March, have been left equally clueless.

One clip, from Canada, shows the contestants discussing the sudden absence of a live audience for evictions from the house: when the first member left, just five days in, the crowd was audible from within the house, but by 14 March, when the second was evicted, the silence was noticeable.

Nigerian doctors go on strike amid coronavirus crisis

The Association of Resident Doctors(ARD), Abuja Chapter has embarked on strike shortly after the third case of Coronavirus was announced in Lagos.

The group announced on Tuesday that it will be embarking on san indefinite strike due to the government’s failure to pay doctors’ salaries for two months.

In a statement signed by its president, Aigbovo Roland, the group states that they arrived at the decision after much deliberation.

He explained that embers of the group are facing serious financial difficulties over the non-payment of their wages adding that despite several warnings, the FCT administration has done nothing to solve the issue.

Aigbovo pointed out that there have been salary shortfalls since the migration to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

He threatened that health workers who are affected by the salary deductions will join the mass action within 48 hours if their demands are not met.

The strike action is coming at a very critical time when the world is facing a serious health problem. The deadly coronavirus is spreading fast with a third case confirmed in Lagos on Tuesday. A 30-year-old woman who recently returned from the UK tested positive for the deadly COVID-19 virus. She has since been quarantined.
