Assault: Oluwo must appear in person, court rules

An Osogbo Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, to appear in person for the hearing of a matter bordering on allegations of assault filed against him by the Agbowu of Ogbaagba, Oba Dirkrullahi Akinropo.

Oba Akinropo filed a suit accusing Oba Akanbi of assault at a peace meeting in the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone XI, on  February 14.

Through his counsel, Soji Oyetola, Oba Akinropo on March 6 sought and got relief of the court to file an application to compel the Oluwo to appear in person for trial.

Addressing the court when the matter came up on Friday, Oyetayo urged the court to issue a bench warrant for the Oluwo’s arrest over his failure to appear before the court.

Oyetayo said the defendant was duly served with the court process and should have appeared in person.

But in a counter-argument,  lawyer for the Oluwo, Tiamiyu Adegboyega, said the application was served on the office of his client around 12.45pm on March 18.

He claimed that the monarch had not been informed and served the process personally.

He urged the court to discountenance the application for bench warrant for the  Oluwo’s arrest, saying it had no basis in law.

Ruling on the application, Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara ruled that Oba Akanbi should appear before the court in person on April 3 when the matter would come up again.

According to him, the matter being a quasi-criminal matter, will require the Oluwo’s presence in court and directed that hearing notice should be pasted on the walls of his residence.

He added that hearing notice should also be forwarded to Oba Akanbi’s verifiable phone number.

Canada confirms over 1000 cases of coronavirus, announces non-acceptance of asylum seekers for now

Canada’s cases of the COVID-19 respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus passed more than 1,000 on Friday.

The sobering reality of the pandemic has made Prime Minister Justin Trudeau roll out a series of measures to stop further spread of the disease.

Henceforth, Canada will turn back asylum seekers who walk over the U.S.-Canada border, Trudeau said on Friday, as economic damage from the coronavirus outbreak intensified and a ban on non-essential travel across the world’s longest undefended border was set to come into effect.

More than 500,000 applications for Canadian unemployment benefits were made so far this week, versus just under 27,000 in the same week last year, Trudeau said. The monthly number of unemployment insurance claims last year averaged 239,000.

“This is of course an unprecedented situation and it is putting a lot of pressure on our system, but we’re on it,” he told reporters outside his house, where he has been in isolation since his wife tested positive for the virus last week.

Air Canada, the country’s largest carrier, said on Friday it will temporarily lay off more than 5,100 employees.

The jobless claims indicate an unemployment rate over the next two months “probably the likes of which we have not seen in the post-war era,” said Bank of Montreal Chief Economist Douglas Porter.

The Bank of Canada on Friday said it would take additional measures to help ensure financial markets continue operating smoothly “given the rapidly evolving uncertainty”.

Canada has closed its borders to most foreign nationals and agreed with the United States this week to close their shared border. A notice from the U.S. Homeland Security Department (DHS) said restrictions will begin at 11:59 p.m. EDT Friday and last until April 20.

Trudeau said the measure to return asylum seekers who walk into Canada outside official border stations was a temporary one to protect the health of Canadians during the coronavirus outbreak.

As the border deadline approached, traffic was already snarled on some crossings early on Friday owing to stepped-up screening measures by the Canada Border Service Agency.

Italian who brought coronavirus to Nigeria is discharged

The unnamed Italian was discharged on Friday night after receiving treatment for nearly a month in Lagos, the state governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said

Earlier in the week, Nigeria’s health minister Osagie Ehanire said the patient had tested negative and that further tests would be carried out before he could be allowed to go home.

“As the COVID-19 Incident Commander for Lagos, I am glad to inform you that the index case; the Italian gentleman is now negative,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Sanwo-Olu said the index patient donated one unit of white blood (plasma) before he was discharged on Friday. The blood plasma is rich in antibody proteins that target #COVID19 virus.

He said the white blood plasma has been frozen in the state’s bio-bank and will be beneficial for the treatment of new patients in the absence of a defined therapeutic drug for #COVID19.

Nigeria has recorded 11 more cases of the coronavirus since the Italian was diagnosed on February 27. One of the cases had contact with the Italian. He has also tested negative for the virus.

The patient arrived in Lagos, Nigeria, on Monday from Milan and was reported ill on 26th February. He was transferred to Lagos State Biosecurity Facilities for isolation and testing.

“We have a traveller that began his journey in Milan on Monday, 24th February. He transited through Instanbul on Turkish Airlines and arrived in Lagos on Monday night,” Lagos State commissioner for health Prof akin Abayomi said at a press conference on February 28.

Abayomi said the Italian spent the night a hotel closed to the airport and travelled to for business engagement at Lafarge Africa’s plant in Ewekoro in Ogun State on Tuesday morning.

“He carried out business in Ogun State within the confines of that company on Tuesday and in the early part of Wednesday.

“By afternoon, he started to develop symptoms for high fever and body pains.”

Abayomi said the patient was isolated and an investigation of the symptoms began at the medical facility owned by the company because of the Italian’s travel origin. He said the patient was isolated overnight on Wednesday and was transferred to Lagos State on Thursday morning.

“He immediately he arrived, he was put straight into isolation and the appropriate test was ordered. Within hours, we received the signal.”

Zimbabwe Reports First Coronavirus Case

Zimbabwe on Friday reported its first coronavirus case, a man who returned to his home in the tourist resort town of Victoria Falls from Britain at the weekend.

“The is the first case of Covid-19 in Zimbabwe,” said Health Minister Obadiah Moyo on state television ZTV.

“The patient is a 38-year-old Caucasian man… who had travelled to Manchester in the UK on the 7th of March and returned to his home in Victoria Falls on the 15th of March via South Africa,” he said.

The Zimbabwean government on Tuesday announced a raft of steps to prevent the virus from spreading – including the cancellation of public and sporting events, and constraints on gatherings. Schools will close on Tuesday.

The country’s public health system, meanwhile, has been suffering for years from a lack of equipment and drugs.

It came under further strain last year when hundreds of junior doctors at state hospitals staged a three-month strike over conditions and pay – which then was less than $200 a month.

EFCC opposes Mompha’s plan to travel abroad to see his family

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday filed an application to stop social media celebrity Ismaila Mustapha, aka Mompha, from travelling abroad to see his family.

Mompha is on trial at a Federal High Court in Lagos on an alleged N33billion money laundering and cyber fraud charge.

He and his firm, Ismalob Global Investment Ltd, were on March 4, 2020 re-arraigned before Justice Mohammed Liman on 22 counts.

They were first arraigned on a 14-count charge last November 25, following his arrest last October 19, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The anti-graft agency said the defendant is based in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Commission alleged that Mompha is a major figure in an organised transnational cyber fraud network, adding that he used Ismalob Investment to launder the funds, part of which he used in acquiring properties in Dubai.

At the resumed sitting on Thursday, Mompha’s counsel Gboyega Oyewole (SAN) concluded his cross-examination of an EFCC investigator, Kaina Garba, before informing the judge of the application.

Garba and three Bureau De Change (BDC) operators had on Wednesday testified against Mompha during examination-in-chief by EFCC counsel Rotimi Oyedepo.

Gboyega said: “My lord, we have filed an application for the first defendant to be allowed to travel abroad so he can check on his family.”

But the EFCC said it had filed a counter application which was still at the court’s registry.

The agency’s counsel prayed the court for another date by which time his application would be in the court’s file.

Justice Liman granted the prayer and adjourned till April 15 to hear both applications.

In the charge, the EFCC alleged that Mompha procured Ismalob Global Investiment Ltd to retain N33.006,026,806 billion between 2015 and 2018.

He was also alleged to have failed to inform the anti-graft agency in writing within seven days before making transferring huge sums of money to several people, including Ikechukwu Kingsley; Ojei Osemeke; one Onuskin; Okafor Ikenna; Ik Tony Global Communication; Ogbu C &C Ventures.

Kenyan politician wants virus patients to be named

A Kenyan opposition figure has called on the government to override doctor-patient confidentiality by publishing the details of all confirmed coronavirus cases.

Moses Wetangula said "not conceal[ing] identities" would help with contact tracing, because it would allow people "to quickly take measures and go for diagnosis".

Kenya's 2017 Health Act states that "health status, treatment or stay in a health facility is confidential except where such information is disclosed under order of court or informed consent for health research and policy planning purposes".

Mr Wetangula's statement has received backing online with some Kenyans asking the authorities to reveal the areas that patients have visited.

"DCI Kenya help us identify the 85 people the new Patient ZERO came into contact with.

You trace us with our phones and arrest us, you use phone triangulation to tell us who was where - Now use Technology for PUBLIC GOOD!," former government official Dennis Itumbi tweeted.

"For someone to know if he came into contact please give details of these patients and their physical addresses. It is the only way for us to come forward," Twitter user Eric Ocharo said.

Paracetamol, Calpol prices increase at UK pharmacy

Customers have been left "in tears" over soaring prices of paracetamol and Calpol at a pharmacy charging up to £20.

The Birmingham pharmacy has come under fire after bottles of 200ml liquid paracetamol appeared for sale at one branch for about treble the average standard price.

City councillor Majid Mahmood said he had five people from his ward tearfully ringing him up about the rises on Wednesday.

His Bromford and Hodge Hill ward sits in one of the most deprived constituencies in England, with a 2018 study commissioned by the End Child Poverty Coalition finding more than half of children grew up in poverty.

Mr Mahmood posted a photograph on Twitter, taken in the pharmacy, showing the price of 100ml of Calpol as £9.99 and a 200ml bottle listed for £19.99.

At other online retailers - where Calpol has sold out - prices were listed at around £3.49 and £6.49, respectively.

Mr Mahmood added that at the same store, a 32-pack of paracetamol pills which had been £1.39 last week had risen to £9.99.

Jhoots, which runs the site, said in a statement that "disparities" in some branches had stemmed from "an erroneous communication" and it had since taken steps to correct prices.

The business, based in Walsall in the West Midlands, said it would also refund any affected customers and ensure no repeat of the error.

It comes as the pharmacy industry has been warning of how wholesale paracetamol prices have "gone up" in the current climate, due to supplier issues.

How shoes left at robbery scene led to arrest of suspect

A witness at Sgt Jamilu Tanimu of Zaria City Police Division, yesterday narrated how a pair of shoes left at the scene of a robbery, linked a juvenile to the crime.

Tanimu made this known while giving evidence at the Zaria City Magistrate Court on Thursday.

The Prosecution, Sgt. Yau Garba, had earlier said the case was first mentioned on February 20, against the defendants; Isah Abdullahi and Mubarak Abdullahi, both 17 years, of Unguwan Dan Madami, Zaria.

The prosecution said the defendants were standing trial over criminal conspiracy, housebreaking, trespass and intimidation, contrary to Sections 58, 327, 377, 270 and 332 of Kaduna State Penal Code Laws.

The witness told the court that on February 6 at about 10:30 hours a case of criminal trespas, house breaking, theft and intimidation was reported by the nominal complainant, Alhaji Yahaya Sani at Zaria city police.

Tanimu said the nominal complainant said on February 6, at about 3.45am his house was broken into by armed robbers who carted away his valuables, but forgot a pair of shoes at the house.

The witness said nine days after the robbery, the first defendant, Isah, was caught stealing in a nearby house, close to the complainant’s house.

Tanimu said: “During police investigation, the first defendant identified the shoe and linked it to Mubarak the second defendant.

“The defendants also denied the allegations against them,” he said.

Under cross examination by defense counsel Hamisu Adamu, the witness said the shoe was not the second defendant’s size, but admitted that it was his during interrogation.

The defense counsel also asked if the police found any other items stolen from the complainant in the hands of the defendants, and the witness said no.

The witness was also unable to explain how the shoe got to the complainant’s house, as the second defendant did not give details on that.

The Magistrate, Mrs Ruqayyat-Ummi Ahmed, adjourned the case till March 26, to allow the prosecutor, Yau Garba to call his third witness.

The magistrate also said the subsisting bail granted the defendants remained.

Polytechnic lecturers give FG 15-day strike notice

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has given the Federal Government 15 days ultimatum for it to honour all pending agreements reached with it or risk industrial action.

Addressing the press after the union’s 97th National Executive Committee meeting at the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, ASUP President, Anderson Ezeibe, said members would embark on strike unless the Federal Government implemented agreement reached with it and meet its other demands.

He also demanded urgent steps to rectify irregularities that accompanied payment of February salary to its members through Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System.

According to him, victimisation of many ASUP officials that participated in lawful struggle had continued unabated, adding that seven lecturers of the Institute of Management Technology, Enugu, and the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, had been dismissed for participating in union activities, while two others from Yaba College of Technology were suspended.

“Based on these which epitomise neglect, disregard and disrespect to the sector; coupled with the insincerity of the government in respecting signed agreements entered into with our union, the union is hereby issuing a 15-day ultimatum to resolve these pending issues affecting the sector or face industrial action by our union without the benefit of any other warning,” Ezeibe added.

Despite only making just eight appearances for Manchester United, Nigeria international, Odion Ighalo, has been rewarded with a hefty bonus of £92,000 (approximately N39m), excluding his weekly £120,000 wages.

California also orders residents to STAY AT HOME

California Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered his state’s residents to stay at home. The order affects roughly 40 million people in the country’s largest state.

The announcement comes as the country attempts to blunt the rapidly escalating reported cases of the coronavirus, which has surged past 13,600 cases, including 200 deaths, according to data compiled by John Hopkins University.

There are more than 1,000 cases in California.

The directive went into effect on Thursday evening, restricting non-essential movement, while allowing essential business and services like grocery stores and pharmacies to operate.

“We’re not victims of circumstance. We can make decisions to meet moments.

This is a moment we need to make tough decisions,” Newsom said in a televised address.

Newsom said the decision would be enforced through “social pressure” and regulatory frameworks, but he did not believe the order would require policing.

The order allows residents to leave their homes for exercise and fresh air.

Newsom’s state-wide order was announced shortly after Los Angeles County announced a similar measure.
