Man shoots his girlfriend then kills himself after losing his job over coronavirus pandemic

A man has shot himself and his girlfriend after losing his job over the coronavirus pandemic in an attempted murder-suicide, police have said.

Roderick Bliss IV, 38, shot his girlfriend in the back before turning the gun on himself at a Pennsylvania home on Monday afternoon.

Wilson Police officers responded to a call on 54 North 17th Street in Wilson Borough where a 43-year-old woman said she had been shot by her longtime boyfriend.

Bliss was found unresponsive and not breathing with a semi-automatic pistol near his body.

The woman had a gunshot wound to her back.

She told police that days prior to the shooting, Bliss had become increasingly upset about the pandemic and about losing his job.

Minutes before the shooting, the woman said Bliss went into the basement and came outside on the porch with the handgun.

She told officers that Bliss said to her, “I already talked to God and I have to do this.”

When she ran from the home, Bliss fired at her four times, striking her once in the back.

He then shot and killed himself, police said in a news release.

Northampton County Coroner Zach Lysek arrived on scene and later ruled Bliss’s death a suicide.

The victim was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where she underwent surgery.

She is currently in the intensive care unit and is expected to survive, police Chief Chris Meehan said.

Meehan added: “In the days prior to the shooting, Bliss had become increasingly upset over the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Minutes before the shooting Bliss was extremely upset about the pandemic and the fact that he had recently lost his job.

“He went into the basement and came outside onto the rear porch with the victim. While holding the handgun, Bliss told the victim, ‘I already talked to God and I have to do this.’ The victim ran off the porch and he shot at her four times striking her once. Bliss then shot himself.”

It wasn’t immediately clear if Bliss lost his job due to the economic downturn due to the pandemic, Meehan said.

A man who works nearby said he called police after hearing the gunshots.

Sammy Greggs told WFMZ: “I heard four gunshots, so I ran away. I called the police, I ran to the side of the hill and looked down and shouted for help."

Northampton County coroner Zach Lysek ruled that Bliss’s death was a suicide.

Coronavirus: Top South African HIV scientist, Ramjee dies

Tributes are being paid to world-renowned South African scientist Gita Ramjee, who has died from Covid-19-related complications.

"She dedicated many years of her life to finding HIV prevention solutions for women," her colleague and friend Gavin Churchyard told the BBC.

Head of UNAids Winnie Byanyima said Prof Ramjee's death was a huge loss at a time when the world needed her most.

South Africa has the largest number of people living with HIV in the world.

The country has begun a three-week lockdown as part of efforts to stop the spread of coronavirus.

"The passing of Prof Ramjee comes as a huge blow to the entirety of the healthcare sector and the global fight against HIV/Aids," the country's Deputy President David Mabuza said in a statement.

"In her, we have indeed lost a champion in the fight against the HIV epidemic, ironically at the hands of this global pandemic. In her honour, we should heed the call to flatten the curve by strengthening our responses to this global pandemic as well as continue the fight to achieve zero new HIV infections."

British Airways expected to suspend 36,000 staff

British Airways is expected to announce it will suspend around 36,000 staff, BBC reports.

The airline, which grounded much of its fleet due to the coronavirus crisis, has been negotiating with the Unite union for more than a week.

The two sides have reached a broad deal but are yet to sign on some details.

The agreement means that up to 80% of BA cabin crew, ground staff, engineers and those working at head office will have their jobs suspended but no staff are expected to be made redundant.

The decision will affect all staff at Gatwick and London City Airport after the airline suspended its operations at both locations until the crisis is over.

Those affected are expected to receive some of their wages through the government's coronavirus job retention scheme, which covers 80% of someone's salary capped at a maximum of £2,500 a month.

"We Underestimated Coronavirus" - America's New York Governor Opens Up

The governor of New York state on Tuesday said officials had “underestimated” the coronavirus epidemic and needed to prepare for the apex of the outbreak.

“I’m tired of being behind this virus. We’ve been behind this virus from day one,” Andrew Cuomo told a news briefing.

“We underestimated this virus. It’s more powerful, it’s more dangerous than we expected.”

Coronavirus cases surged to 75,795 in New York, while the death toll jumped nearly 30 per cent overnight to 1,550, Cuomo said, warning that the state was “still headed up the mountain.”

The new cases mean New York has surpassed China’s Hubei province which reported 67,801 cases since the virus emerged there in December, according to John Hopkins University data.

The New York governor also confirmed that his brother, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, had tested positive for coronavirus.

“He’s going to be quarantined in his basement at home,” Cuomo said of his brother, after calling the virus a “great equaliser”.

President Trump is considering a lockdown of New York.

Why Juventus Is Planning To Sell Star Player Ronaldo

Juventus are reportedly considering selling star man Cristiano Ronaldo in order to raise cash for life after coronavirus.

As one of the world’s most affected countries, Italy and the Serie A have been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.

There has been no football in the top flight since March 9, when most games were played behind closed doors.

The lack of action has caused a number of financial constraints, and clubs have been forced to take action across Europe.

Juventus have already lowered the wages of players and coaching staff significantly, with the figure believed to be around a 70 percent cut.

But Italian outlet Il Messaggero report that the Old Lady could even resort to selling Ronaldo, and could demand as much as £62.5m for the 35-year-old in order to balance the books.

Aston Villa star Jack Grealish crashes his £80K Range Rover after telling fans to stay home

Premier League ace Jack Grealish crashed his car following a 4am party - just hours after urging fans stay indoors for the virus lockdown.

The Aston Villa hypocrite, 24, apparently smashed the £80,000 Range Rover into three parked cars near Solihull, West Midlands.

Grealish appeared unsteady and confused moments after the alleged crash.

The Aston Villa captain was seen arguing with onlookers at 8am on Sunday — amid claims he had partied all night at a pal’s flat despite the virus lockdown.

Hours earlier, he posted a video urging fans to stay safe at home.

Residents’ photos show the midfielder standing next to his damaged vehicle in a hoodie, shorts and one black slipper and a white slip-on sandal.

The 4x4 was said to have reversed from a designated parking bay, across a road and gone into a parked silver van, leaving it with a dented bumper and smashed rear lights.

Witnesses said the Range Rover then drove 200 yards, veering on to the pavement and careering into vehicles including a £30,000 silver C-Class Mercedes, and a £20,000 blue Merc.

Grealish’s vehicle also collided with iron railings in front of an estate agency.

It was left parked on double yellows in front of flats, with damage to the rear and debris scattered nearby.

Grealish was alleged to have boasted to motorists that he would pay for the damage.

He was said to have left details with a resident then walked off before police arrived in Dickens Heath, near Solihull.

A neighbour said: “The party had been going on all night. It was unbearable. The noise had only stopped a short while when, just after 8am, there were a series of almighty collisions which reverberated through the flats.

Grealish was said to have been at the flat of ex-Scottish striker Ross McCormack, 33, who left Villa last year.

'Reckless' world leader says vodka and saunas will protect people from coronavirus

The president of Belarus has shrugged off any concerns about coronavirus - and has urged residents to drink vodka and go to saunas.

The country has seen no restrictions or lockdowns, with sporting fixtures all being played as normal.

President Alexander Lukashenko took part in an ice hockey game over the weekend as thousands continue to fill football stadiums.

Belarusian football organisers have no plans to cancel fixtures or postpone the season, with Lukashenko claiming "sport is the best anti-virus remedy".

He added: "It's better to die standing on your feet than to live on your knees."

The 61-year-old previously said: “The world has gone mad from the coronavirus.

“This psychosis has crippled national economies almost everywhere in the world.”

In a move that will put lives at risk, he vowed to go ahead with the country's Victory Day parade on May 9 – an event which sees World War Two veterans march through the streets, Daily Star reports.

He has recently suggested that drinking 50ml of vodka, visiting saunas and working in fields can keep people safe.

According to the Belarusian Telegraph Agency, Lukashenko said: "We are not cancelling anything. We will host all the events we have planned… Let God protect us from the coronavirus."

He said he would only consider a quarantine "only when it is really needed", but did not say when this would be.

Lukashenko also voiced support for US President Donald Trump, who has said he wants businesses back open by Easter.

There have so far been 94 coronavirus cases in Belarus, but experts fear the number could rocket with authorities refusing to make any measures to stop it spreading.

New revelation! Scientists claim urine of astronauts could be used to build houses on the moon

While the idea of building houses on the moon was once confined to the realm of science fiction, NASA hopes it could become a reality in the near future.

Now, scientists have revealed a rather unusual building material for lunar bases - astronauts’ urine.

A new study by researchers from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena has indicated that urea - a chemical found in urine - could be used as a plasticiser in the concrete of structures on the moon.

Using urea as a material could solve the problem of having to transport building materials from Earth to the moon, according to the researchers.

Professor Ramon Pamies, an author of the study, said: “To make the geopolymer concrete that will be used on the moon, the idea is to use what is there: regolith (loose material from the moon's surface) and the water from the ice present in some areas.

"But moreover, with this study we have seen that a waste product, such as the urine of the personnel who occupy the moon bases, could also be used.

“The two main components of this body fluid are water and urea, a molecule that allows the hydrogen bonds to be broken and, therefore, reduces the viscosities of many aqueous mixtures.”

In the study, the researchers tested using urea as a plasticiser to build mud cylinders. The cylinders were heated to 80°C, before their resistance was tested.

While the results are early, they indicate that urea from urine could serve as a reliable plasticiser in the future.

Anna-Lena Kjøniksen, one of the researchers on the study, said: “We have not yet investigated how the urea would be extracted from the urine, as we are assessing whether this would really be necessary, because perhaps its other components could also be used to form the geopolymer concrete.

“The actual water in the urine could be used for the mixture, together with that which can be obtained on the Moon, or a combination of both."

Ditching your bra in coronavirus lockdown could cause saggy breasts, experts warn

It's been days in Nigeria, weeks in some countries and months in another since there has been a  coronavirus lockdown, in most parts of the world.

Pyjamas are naturally becoming the national uniform and nobody has a clue what day it will end.

Experts have now warned women that enjoying the freedom of ditching your bra for the duration of time indoors could have long term effects on your breasts.

Going braless has been one of the small victories that have been celebrated since we were told to stay at home, with some one writing on social media: "I’ve been braless for weeks now I cannot contain my joy. That’s probably the only liberating thing about this lockdown."

Victoria Shelton, a garment technologist at Figleaves, has told the Daily Mail that leaving breasts unsupported could damage the connective tissue which helps to maintain structural integrity, known as the Cooper's ligaments.

She said: "Our wardrobe needs have changed as we find ourselves at home. But we all still need to wear a bra as our breasts need to be supported – due to their weight you may damage your posture or have back pain if your breasts aren't fully supported.

"If breasts are left unsupported damage can occur to the Cooper's ligament in the breast, causing them to sag."

It was echoed by Dr Riccardo Frati, of Frati Cosmetic surgery, who argued bras were important to give support to breasts due to potential damage to Cooper's ligaments, and because 'breasts tend to sag over time due to gravity and age'.

Victoria explained how to compromise at home by switching to something 'super comfortable so we can enjoy that no bra feeling' without the risk.

Her advice was to look out for flexi wires, often found in maternity ranges.

She added: "If you have a larger bust, look for non-wired styles that have seam cups as these have often been designed and fitted to support a larger bust. Padded hook and eyes, and soft brushed straps are also key for comfort."

Woman with coronavirus and unborn baby die during emergency C-section

A woman who was diagnosed with Covid-19 and her baby have died during a caesarean section.

The 37-year-old mother-to-be died in hospital in Spain on Sunday, local media reports.

She was in quarantine at home with a high fever and only went to hospital when contractions started.

Specialists decided to carry out the C-section at the Teresa Herrera Hospital in the city of La Coruna.

The unnamed woman is the youngest victim in the Galicia area of Spain.

There were conflicting reports about whether she had underlying health conditions, which regional health officials said they were not in a position to clarify.

Regional newspaper La Voz de Galicia reported the woman’s relatives were insisting she had no serious health problems and was initially sent home after going to hospital because she had reached her due date, before ordered back because of “complications.”

Her husband is said to have been told their baby girl had died during the emergency C-section.

His wife reportedly died around half an hour later following a cardiac arrest linked to the coronavirus she had tested positive for.

A regional health official said she could not discuss individual patients and everything the regional health authority had to say was in the official statements put out daily reflecting the number of confirmed coronavirus cases which include the number of deaths.

The number of coronavirus deaths in Galicia so far totals 61. As of Sunday 122 people in the region were in intensive care.

Around 640 of the 2,925 coronavirus cases Galicia has registered so far are from the La Coruna area.

Spain is registering record number of coronavirus deaths, with 838 in the 24 hours from Saturday to Sunday.

More than 6,500 with coronavirus have died nationwide.

Coronavirus Kills Young Man, Infects His Mum After A Doctor Told Him "Don't Worry"

That a person is showing only mild symptoms doesn't mean all is well yet. A "healthy" teenager died from suspected coronavirus after being told he had "nothing to worry about".

Luca Di Nicola, 19, worked as a chef at a family restaurant in Enfield, North London, before contracting Covid-19.

Originally from east Italy, Luca, died at the North Middlesex Hospital in London.

His family described him as "very healthy", although he did visit a GP with coronavirus symptoms before he died.

Speaking to Italian news outlet La Repubblica, Luca's auntie said: "For a week before his death Luca had a fever and a cough and my sister-in-law Clarissa and her partner Vincenzo who lived in the same house also had it.

"The London-based doctor gave my nephew some paracetamol.

"But Luca got worse on March 23.

"The doctor visited him at home and told him that he was young, strong and that he didn't have to worry about that bad flu."

However, Luca's condition worsened when he collapsed after complaining of chest pains.

Family members called an ambulance, and paramedics managed to revive him, but his lungs collapsed.

Now there are fears that Luca's mum Clarissa and Vincenzo may have the disease after showing similar symptoms. They have been told to self-isolate for two weeks.
