First Coronavirus Patients Injected In UK Vaccine Trial (Photos)

The world is anxiously waiting, hoping for the very best. The first human trial in Europe of a coronavirus vaccine has begun in Oxford.

Two volunteers were injected, the first of more than 800 people recruited for the study.

Half will receive the Covid-19 vaccine, and half a control vaccine which protects against meningitis but not coronavirus.

The design of the trial means volunteers will not know which vaccine they are getting, though doctors will.

Elisa Granato, one of the two who received the jab, told the BBC: "I'm a scientist, so I wanted to try to support the scientific process wherever I can."

The vaccine was developed in under three months by a team at Oxford University. Sarah Gilbert, professor of vaccinology at the Jenner Institute, led the pre-clinical research.

"Personally I have a high degree of confidence in this vaccine," she said.

"Of course, we have to test it and get data from humans. We have to demonstrate it actually works and stops people getting infected with coronavirus before using the vaccine in the wider population."

Prof Gilbert previously said she was "80% confident" the vaccine would work, and has now said she is "very optimistic" about its chances.

The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has reacted to theit disgraceful conduct;

'The two policemen, F/NO 41112 CPL Ozimende Aidonojie and F/NO 516384 PC Salubi Stephen in this viral video have been identified, arrested and detained. They are currently undergoing internal disciplinary sanctions at the Edo State Police Command Headquarters.

First two volunteers injected with coronavirus vaccine as UK begins human trials

Two scientists have been injected with a hopeful coronavirus vaccine in the UK’s first human trials.

University of Oxford researchers administered the first dose on Thursday, while the other person was given a meningitis vaccine to be used for comparison. The Oxford Vaccine Group – who is ‘very optimistic’ it will work – hopes to repeat the process with six more volunteers on Saturday, with more than 1,000 being tested from Monday.

Microbiologist Elisa Granato and cancer researcher Edward O’Neill volunteered themselves to be the first two participants. They said they wanted to help in what could be a groundbreaking development in the fight against the pandemic.

Ms Granato, who took part in the trial on her 32nd birthday, said she was ‘excited’ to support the efforts by volunteering.

She told the BBC: ‘Since I don’t study viruses, I felt a bit useless these days, so I felt like this is a very easy way for me to support the cause.’

Mr O’Neill said: ‘It seems like the right thing to do to ensure that we can combat this disease and get over it a lot faster.’

Professor Sarah Gilbert, who is leading the trial team, said she is optimistic about the vaccine’s chances of success.

She said: ‘Personally, I’m very optimistic it’s going to work. Formally, we are testing it in an efficacy setting.

‘There’s absolutely no suggestion we’re going to start using this vaccine in a wider population before we’ve demonstrated that it actually works and stops getting people infected with coronavirus.’

Up to 1,102 participants will be recruited across multiple study sites in Oxford, Southampton, London and Bristol from next week.

Lydia Guthrie, who will take part week, told BBC Radio 4’s The World At One programme: ‘They’ve (the clinical team) been very clear with participants about the potential risk, and vaccine trials are very carefully regulated, so we’ve had to give explicit consent at every step of the way.

‘They’re really clear with us that as participants we can pull out at any time if we change our minds.’

She added that after receiving either the Covid-19 vaccine candidate or the meningitis jab, she would go about her normal life, keeping a diary about how she feels, or any symptoms.

John Jukes, from Witney, Oxfordshire, is expected to get his injection on Monday.

He told the Daily Mail: ‘I don’t see what I am doing as being heroic at all. I’m in a position to possibly be helpful to lots of people – that’s an opportunity to grab.’

A Covid-19 vaccine is considered the ultimate exit strategy by many experts, and scientists across the world are racing to develop one that can be produced at scale.

The Oxford team, which was given a more than £20 million cash boost this week, hopes to have at least a million doses of its candidate ready in September.

Imperial College London are also hoping to have a vaccine ready to use by the end of the year and has also received more backing from the government.

The researchers say a vaccine may be available for frontline workers and the most vulnerable by late winter, with clinical trials starting in June.

However, England’s Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty said yesterday that the chances of a vaccine being made available by the end of the year were ‘incredibly small’.

The government has said that until a vaccine is found, social distancing is the most effective way at slowing the spread of the virus and the country could face multiple lockdowns until there is a scientific breakthrough.

Don’t Extend Lockdown In Lagos, Abuja, Others - NLC Tells FG

The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on the Federal Government not to extend the lockdown order on COVID-19, warning that doing so might cause social unrest in the affected states and the Federal Capital Territory.

In a letter addressed to the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and dater April 14, 2020, which was signed by the NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, the union also frowned at the method employed by the FG in the distribution of the palliative measure, calling for the expansion of the initiative to all Nigerians affected by the pandemic.

The union said, “While we understand the public health imperatives for extending the lockdown in some parts of the country, it is also very important to underscore the fact that the states currently under total lockdown are the economic and administrative nerve centres of Nigeria.

“This is very dicey. As much as it is important to keep many Nigerians from dying in the hands of coronavirus, loss of income and the accompanying destitution can also be a pathfinder for numerous other sicknesses and deaths. This is the time to play the balancing game.

“The truth is that our economy might relapse into prolonged coma if the current lockdown in the nation’s nerve centres goes beyond the current extension.

“There were widespread acts of civil disobedience, inducement of law enforcement agents to gain passes and even various forms of violent crimes.

“No one is sure how long this dam would hold. We fear that the situation will get out of hand if the lockdown exceeds one month.

Again, R Kelly is denied early prison release despite an outbreak of coronavirus in his prison

R Kelly has been denied early release from prison after raising fears over the coronavirus spread at the federal jail.

The 53-year-old singer is currently locked up and awaiting trial at MCC Chicago where an outbreak of COVID-19 has occured.

In figures provided by the Bureau of Prisons on Wednesday, there are 500 positive-testing inmates, 298 positive-testing staff members and 17 deaths.

As of Monday, 23 inmates at MCC have tested positive for COVID-19.

Kelly's legal team described the centre as a 'petri dish' and asked he be removed for his safety.

According to TMZ, Judge Ann Donnelly said that while she acknowledged the virus had spread to the facility, Kelly's motion for release on bond did not present enough evidence that he was likely to contract the deadly virus.

Kelly's lawyer had told the judge he was in a vulnerable position after an inmate on his floor was hospitalised with coronavirus.

The lawyer also insisted Kelly was very likely to return as he had turned up to previous court hearings and owes nearly $2million to the Internal Revenue Service. However, the appeal was denied.

It's not the first time Kelly has attempted to be granted early release from jail.

The singer made another request last month - again over fears of catching coronavirus buta judge ruled the risk was too high to let him go.

Kano Needs N15B From FG To Fight Coronavirus - Gov Ganduje

Kano State Government has revealed on Wednesday that it has applied for N15b from the Federal Government to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The state had not received a dime from the federal government as support to fight the COVID-19 disease.

This was disclosed by the state governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, during a television programme ‘Politics Today’ aired on Channels Television.

Kano’s COVID-19 cases are rising by the day and in just over a week, the cases are close to a hundred.

Ganduje had last week declared a lockdown to curb the spread of the virus within the state.

He explained that the N15b would be expended in paying voluntary health workers engaged by the state to support the health personnel, personal protective equipment (PPE) and the creation of other testing centres.

“You can understand that Kano is the most populated in the country hence the only testing centre at AKTH is not enough for us,” said Ganduje.

The female suspects will be quarantined at their own cost at Mulala Girls’ High School and the male suspects will be placed under mandatory isolation at Matiliku Boys’ High School, also at their own cost, said Okumu.

“I want to tell all Nzaui Sub-County residents that if you’ll be found in a lodging after 7pm, we shall presume you are a COVID-19 carrier, and we shall, therefore, put you under mandatory quarantine at your own cost,” said the area police boss.

Four other people, who were in a bar known as Kanini Kaseo Bar in Emali, were arrested for convening in a social joint contrary to Government’s anti-COVID-19 directives.

The four comprised two waitresses and two male customers, who will also be quarantined at their own expense.
