Ondo election: Many injured, over 20 vehicles, motorcycles destroyed as APC, PDP supporters clash in Owo [Photos]

 

Political violence rocked Ipele community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Tuesday as supporters of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Eyitayo Jegede and that of the All Progressives Congress, APC, clashed.

The clash was said to have occurred when the campaign train of the PDP arrived in the community.

Following the incident, Jegede alleged that policemen supervised the attack on his campaign train by thugs.

According to Jegede, who spoke through his campaign’s Head of Media Research, Kayode Fasua, the political thugs suspected to be from the camp of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC attacked supporters of the PDP upon their entry into Ipele.

Specifically, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO of Ipele was alleged to have backed the thugs all through the attack.

Meanwhile, the camp of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has accused the PDP candidate of instigating the attack in the community.

While emphasizing the PDP is crying more than the bereaved, the Spokesperson of the Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organization, Olabode Richard Olatunde stated that “Eyiyato Jegede SAN, ordered his thugs to unleash coordinated attacks on the innocent people of Ipele and Ijebu in Owo local government area. Our people were traumatized with the sound of gunshots sporadically by Eyiyato Jegede thugs in Owo today.

“Sensing that the PDP might be in the main town, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, ordered his campaign convoy to take another route out of the town.

“Despite this, Eyitayo Jegede and the PDP still went ahead to cause mayhem in Owo by attacking innocent members of the public and anyone with APC or Akeredolu branded caps or T-Shirt.

“No fewer than 20 cars were destroyed and many innocent people of Ipele and Ijebu Owo injured. Motorcycles were burnt and the streets of Ipele littered with shells of bullets.

“This intimidation to scare the people of Owo from coming out to vote massively for their son will not work. The people are resolved to support Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

“We must also note that the PDP went berserk when no one received them into Owo. They obviously prepared to come into the ancient town for attacks and violence not to campaign.”

Independence Parade: FG orders blockage of all routes leading to Eagle Square

Ahead of the parade to mark Nigeria’s 60th Independence anniversary on Oct.1, the Federal Government has ordered that all routes leading to the Eagle Square should be blocked from midnight on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced this in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja.

The Minister said that the blockage is part of measures put in place to further enhance security in and around Eagle Square, venue of the Independence ceremony located in the heart of Abuja.

He said that Shehu Shagari Way, Ahmadu Bello Way, outward and inward-bound Airport Roads and adjoining roads would be blocked to traffic.

The Minister added that the Federal Secretariat Complex would be evacuated by 2.00 pm on Wednesday.

He explained that by the evacuation, all workers within the precincts of the Eagle Square must vacate their offices from the time.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Thursday parade and Presidential broadcast is the climax of the events lined up for the 60th independence anniversary celebration.

NAN reports that the celebration has been in full swing following the launch of the theme and logo by Mr President.

So far, a public lecture, Special Jumat Service, an Inter-denominational Church Service and the launch of the National Ethics and Integrity Policy, as well as the Integrity Award to commemorate the 20th anniversary of ICPC, had been held.

A historical exhibition titled “Nigeria: A Country of Colours and Tongues”, has also been held.

The federal government has also announced that the Diamond Jubilee would be a year-long celebration with the hosting of staggering events until 30 Sept. 2021.

Trump arrives in Cleveland for first debate with Biden

President Donald Trump arrived in Cleveland on Tuesday ahead of the first of three election debates with challenger Joe Biden.

“He’s ready to go,” a senior campaign official told reporters on Air Force One.

The official said Trump was bringing former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani — now a controversial lawyer for the president — and mixed martial arts fighter Colby Covington as guests.

Frontrunner Joe Biden and an increasingly struggling Donald Trump traded jabs Tuesday hours ahead of a first presidential debate that promised to be as nasty and unpredictable a clash as American voters have ever seen.

Before they’d even met on the stage in Cleveland for the first of three 90-minute live television clashes, Biden made public his tax returns to capitalize on revelations by The New York Times that the billionaire Trump avoided paying almost any federal income taxes for years.

Trump’s reported mastery of loopholes to pay just $750 in federal tax during the first year of his presidency has given Biden an opening to paint the Republican as a phony when he says he represents America’s working classes. By contrast, Biden’s returns show that he and his wife Jill paid a hefty $299,346 in federal income taxes for 2019.

While Biden tees up what is likely to be a central weapon in the debate, Trump’s team leaned in on its lurid narrative that the Democrat challenger is senile and needs help to get through the debate.

Trump has repeatedly demanded that Biden take a test for performance enhancing drugs.

And on Tuesday, his campaign, echoed by Trump-friendly Fox News, launched into new conspiracy theory territory by loudly demanding that Biden be checked for a secret earpiece — presumably to give him answers in the debate.

“Joe Biden’s handlers several days ago agreed to a pre-debate inspection for electronic earpieces but today abruptly reversed themselves and declined,” Tim Murtaugh, Trump 2020 communications director, said in a statement.

The campaign also claimed that Biden had asked for “multiple breaks during the debate, which President Trump doesn’t need.”

Biden’s deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield called all this “absurd” and shot back with her own bit of rumor mongering, claiming that Trump’s team had tried unsuccessfully to ensure that the debate moderator, Fox News’ Chris Wallace, would never mention the number of US deaths from Covid-19

“See how easy that was to try to throw up a distraction?” she was quoted as saying by Politico.

Trump flew into in Cleveland Tuesday afternoon ahead of the debate, with a senior official on Air Force One telling reporters: “He’s ready to go.”

The pre-game trash talk gave a flavor of what the two camps are trying to achieve.

Trump, behind in national and swing state polls, is considered a master at changing the subject and stirring outrage.

Biden wants to keep the debate firmly fixed on Trump’s biggest liabilities — the more than 200,000 coronavirus deaths and the tax avoidance uproar.

Covid-19 restrictions will give the debate a streamlined look with a smaller audience. Naturally, there won’t be the once standard — even if forced — show of goodwill in shaking hands.

What Americans will get, however, is a chance finally to see Trump, 74, and Biden, 77, side by side.

And Trump, who fancies his skills as a verbal pugilist, is expected to hit hard and low.

Carabao Cup: Tottenham dump Chelsea out

Chelsea are out of the Carabao Cup, after losing on penalties to Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night.

Frank Lampard’s men took the lead in the first half, after Timo Werner slammed in his first goal for the club.

However, the Blues failed to make their dominance count and allowed Spurs back into the game.

The hosts eventually levelled late in the second half, as Erik Lamela appeared unmarked at the far post to prod the ball home.

Spot-kicks were taken to decide which team qualifies for the quarter-finals.

Each side converted their first five kicks, but Mason Mount missed for Chelsea.

Chinese teacher sentenced to death for poisoning children

A kindergarten teacher in China has been sentenced to death for poisoning dozens of children in an act of revenge against a colleague that left one toddler dead.

A court in the central Chinese province of Henan said Wang Yun put sodium nitrite into porridge being prepared for her colleague’s students, sickening 25.

The attack took place in March 2019 and left one boy severely ill for months before he died in January this year, according to news reports.

The Jiaozuo City Intermediate People’s Court on Monday said Wang knew sodium nitrite was harmful but went ahead “with no regard for the consequences”, leaving many innocent children in hospital.

News reports last year said the children began vomiting and fainting after eating their breakfast.

Kindergarten students in China are aged between three and six.

The death sentence was handed to Wang this week for the offense of using dangerous substances.

Sodium nitrite is used for curing meats but can be toxic when ingested in high amounts.

Wang concealed her reasons for the poisoning after carrying out the crime and her “motives were despicable”, the court said.

Her “criminal methods and circumstances were exceedingly bad, with especially severe circumstances, and she should be severely punished in accordance with the law,” the sentencing statement said.

The court added that Wang and the manager of the kindergarten must compensate the children’s families.

It was not the first time Wang used sodium nitrite to poison someone, authorities said. In 2017 she put it in her husband’s mug, causing him minor injuries.

In March last year, 36 primary school students in southwest China’s Sichuan province were hospitalized after eating “moldy food”.

Gay dad welcomes baby girl with his daughter's ex boyfriend

One of the UK's first gay dads has announced he has welcomed a baby girl with his boyfriend - who used to date his daughter.

Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, 55, announced the news on his Instagram about his child with Scott Hutchinson, 25, the ex of his oldest daughter Saffron, 20.

The couple announced they were expecting back in March.

They have now confirmed in an Instagram post their baby daughter, Valentina, has been brought into the world.

"Welcome to the world our beautiful daughter - Valentina Willow Drewitt-Barlow x our girl is almost a month early but she is perfect," Barrie said in a video.

He added: "We feel totally blessed x I love you Scott."

Barrie split from his husband Tony, 55, after falling in love with Scott.

Last year he expressed his desire to have daughters with his new partner through a surrogate mother.

Scott was previously in a relationship with his partner's 20-year-old daughter Saffron.

In a bizarre twist, the Drewitt-Barlows and Scott all live under the same roof.

American tourist in touble for writing negative review about hotel in Thailand

An American man is facing two years behind bars after penning negative online reviews about a Thailand hotel -- including accusing the business of “modern-day slavery,” according to reports.

Wesley Barnes, who works in Thailand, was arrested for allegedly causing damage to the reputation of the Sea View Resort on Koh Chang island.

Barnes allegedly wrote reviews on multiple sites in which he claimed that he dealt with “unfriendly staff” who “act like they don’t want anyone here” during a recent visit to the popular resort destination.

At least one TripAdvisor review that accused the hotel of “modern-day slavery” has been removed for violating the site’s guidelines, the report said.

“The Sea View Resort owner filed a complaint that the defendant had posted unfair reviews on his hotel on the TripAdvisor website,” Koh Chang Police Col. Thanapon Taemsara said. 

The hotel said it took legal action against the former guest to prevent more reviews from being posted.

“We chose to file a complaint to serve as a deterrent, as we understood he may continue to write negative reviews week after week for the foreseeable future,” the hotel said.

In addition to the unflattering reviews, Barnes was accused of fighting with staff over not paying a corkage fee for booze.

Barnes was taken into custody and returned to Koh Chang, where he was briefly detained before he was released on bail.

If found guilty, Barnes could face up to two years in prison and a 200,000 baht (around N6m) fine, the report said.

Thailand is notorious for its anti-defamation laws, which have long been criticized by human rights groups.

In December 2019, a Thai journalist was sentenced to two years in prison for criticizing a chicken farm on Twitter.

So sad! Police officer asked to investigate s3xual assault on teen girl also 'molests' her

A veteran New Orleans police officer allegedly molested an underage girl whose s3xual assault he was investigating, according to a report.

Rodney Vicknair, 53, was arrested on charges of s3xual battery, indecent behavior with a juvenile and malfeasance in office after being accused of fondling the breasts and genitals of a 15-year-old girl while he looked into allegations that she was s3xually assaulted by someone else, a source close to the matter said. 

Vicknair, a 13-year department veteran, allegedly started texting the girl before visiting her house while not on the job, telling her how attractive she was and how much she aroused him, a source who spoke on condition of anonymity said. 

Vicknair, who was taken into custody without incident at his home, was suspended from his job pending the outcome of the criminal charges.

“Allegations against one of our own involving a juvenile is reprehensible,” Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said in a statement Saturday. “Upon learning of the situation, the NOPD took swift action against the accused officer. New Orleans police officers are held to a higher standard. We will not tolerate behavior that compromises the public trust or violates the law.”

An investigation into Vicknair was launched after the department’s Public Integrity Bureau received a tip that he had an “inappropriate relationship” with a minor, police said. But department officials did not elaborate on Vicknair’s connection to the alleged victim in Saturday’s statement.

Vicknair remained held without bail in jail. It’s unclear if he’s hired an attorney. He spent 19 years working as an emergency medical technician before joining New Orleans police.

Vicknair faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of sexual battery.

Man uses drones to drop bombs near ex girlfriend's house

A man is going to spend five years in federal prison for using a drone to drop explosives near his ex’s home in eastern Pennsylvania.

Jason Muzzicato, 45, came to the attention of federal prosecutors last year during an investigation of a series of small blasts that had rattled the community of Bangor.

In a search of Muzzicato’s home, investigators discovered a cache of guns and ammunition. The arsenal was a no-no because his ex had a protection from abuse order against him. 

Muzzicato denied flying the drone but still pleaded guilty in December to two weapons possession counts and a count of flying an unregistered aircraft.

Man jailed 7 years for 'defrauding' Diamond Bank of N30m

Justice Josephine Oyefeso of the Lagos State High Court, Igbosere, on Monday sentenced a fraudster, Tunde Martins, to seven years’ imprisonment for N30m fraud.

The convict had obtained the said sum as a loan from Diamond Bank Plc with a forged certificate of occupancy and refused to pay back. 

His journey to prison began after he was arraigned alongside his company, Centre Global Limited by the Lagos Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in 2018 on three counts bordering on obtaining by false pretences, forgery and use of false documents, to which he pleaded not guilty.

During Martins’ trial, the prosecution counsel, Anita Imo, tendered several documents as exhibits and called five witnesses.

According to the Head of Media and Publicity, EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, Justice Oyefeso found Martins guilty of the offences on September 23, 2020, but deferred ruling to Monday, September 28, 2020.

Delivering her judgment, Oyefeso sentenced the convict to seven years’ imprisonment without an option of fine.

She also ordered that his company, Centre Global Limited, be wound up and all the money accrued from it remitted to Diamond Bank Plc.

Primary school teacher who spent $45k covering his body in tattoos banned from kindergarten

A schoolteacher, whose body is covered in tattoos and who has had the whites of his eyes surgically turned black, said he was prevented from teaching at a French kindergarten after a parent complained he scared their child. 

Sylvain Helaine was teaching at the Docteur Morere Elementary School in Palaiseau, a suburb of Paris, last year when the parents of a three-year-old complained to educational authorities.

They said their son, who was not taught by Helaine, had nightmares after seeing him.

It was ruled that the 35-year-old, who is considered to be France's most tattooed man, could continue teaching but only for children over the age of six.  

Helaine, who was born in Paris, got his first ink when he was 27 and has since spent over £35,000 and around 460 hours under the tattooists' needle.

He said that in the months following the complaint the school authorities informed him he would no longer teach kindergarten children. 

'I think the decision they took was quite sad,' said Helaine, before claiming that pupils can see past his appearance after the initial shock.

'All of my students and their parents were always cool with me because basically they knew me,' he added. 

'It's only when people see me from far away that they can assume the worst.'

A spokesman for the local education authority said an agreement was reached with Helaine to move him away from teaching kindergarten. 

Pupils under six 'could be frightened by his appearance', the spokesman said. 

Helaine said he would stick with his chosen career despite the setbacks. 'I'm a primary school teacher... I love my job.'

UFC middleweight champion Isreal Adesanya says he followed his father’s instruction by shaving his head before his win over Paulo Costa on Sunday.

A day before the UFC 253, Adesanya posted a picture of his new look after he dyed his hair pink and got many of his fans talking about the new hairstyle for the fight.

In the post-fight press conference, Adesanya said he had his head shaved because his dad told him that if Costa was hurt and couldn’t see, he could still focus on his pink hair.

He said, “My dad, shout out to Oluwafemi, the big dog, big fam dog. Dad said I am going to blind him (Costa).

“I am gonna blind him with my jab and when he is compromised with one eye, I will take the other eye out.

“If he sees a pink hue, he will know that’s where my head is and he will just aim for the pink hue.

“So I was like, you are right and like a good boy, I listened to my dad. He is a smart man.”

For the first time, the senior Adesanya, his wife and other members of the family were absent at the ringside in Fight Island in Abu Dhabi due to COVID-19.

Nigeria records 136 new coronavirus cases, three more deaths

Nigeria reported 136 new cases of coronavirus and three more deaths from the virus in the past 24 hours, the country’s infectious disease agency, NCDC, said on Monday.

With the new figures, the total coronavirus infections in the country is now 58,460 while 1,111 COVID-19 related deaths have so far been reported.

The health agency said almost 50,000 patients have recovered from the virus, which translates to a recovery rate of about 85 per cent.

Meanwhile, the are still about 7,400 active infections in Nigeria.

The 136 new cases were reported from 13 states: Lagos (71), Rivers (23), Plateau (12), Adamawa (6), Oyo (6), Kaduna (5), Abia (3), FCT (3), Katsina (2), Kwara (2), Bauchi (1), Borno (1), Edo (1).
