Government bans EndSARS protests, others in Abuja

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Muhammad Musa Bello, has banned all forms of protests in the capital territory, Abuja.

Bello announced the ban at a security meeting which had in attendance, the Permanent Secretary, FCTA, Mr Olusade Adesola, heads of various security agencies and military formations in the FCT, senior members of staff of the FCTA, representatives of religious and traditional institutions as well as Area Council Chairmen.

This followed the demonstration against police brutality in Abuja.

The minister explained that the protest had endangered the lives of residents.

According to the Minister, the protesters failed to adhere to the Covid-19 protocols, hence the ban on peaceful protest.

A statement released by FCT Security Committee said: “The Committee noted with satisfaction the directive by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Inspector-General of Police to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad {SARS} as well as other reforms aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the Nigerian police.

“It also noted that in response to the directive of the President and the yearnings of the Nigerian people, the Inspector General of Police has dissolved the SARS across the 36 State Police Commands and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) where they hitherto existed.

“However, the Committee noted with concern that despite the pronouncement by the Inspector General of Police scrapping the FSARS, the #ENDSARS protests continued in parts of the Territory. The protesters caused inconveniences to law-abiding citizens.

“While the Committee recognizes the rights of citizens as regards freedom of association and movement as enshrined in the constitution, it has observed that the unruly conduct of the crowd and manner of demonstrations are in complete violation of the COVID-19 safety protocols which were put in place to safeguard the lives of citizens.

“These violations endanger the lives of not just the demonstrators, but also other citizens going about their legitimate concerns.

“Consequently, the Committee directs that due to the dangers posed by COVID-19, all street demonstrations, protests and processions will not be allowed anywhere within the FCT.”

Buratai, army under fire after threatening #EndSARS protesters

A torrent of attacks on the Nigerian Army has been triggered by its statement warning #EndSARS protesters in the country.

Most commenters wondered why the army should read the riot act to peaceful protesters when it has failed to defeat the menace of Boko Haram in the North East.

The army early on Thursday warned those it called subversive elements and trouble makers to desist from such acts as it remains highly committed to defend the country and her democracy at all cost.

Colonel Sagir Musa, the spokesman said the army is committed to the sustenance of peace, security and defence of democracy.

Musa’s contentious statement read:

“The Nigerian Army (NA) wishes to reassure law abiding citizens that it is highly committed to the sustenance of peace, security and defence of democracy in Nigeria.

“As a responsible and law abiding organisation, the NA reaffirms its unalloyed loyalty and commitment to the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari and the Constitution of the Country.

“The NA hereby warns all subversive elements and trouble makers to desist from such acts as it remains highly committed to defend the country and her democracy at all cost.

“The NA is ready to fully support the civil authority in whatever capacity to maintain law and order and deal with any situation decisively.

“All officers and men are directed never to be distracted by anti democratic forces and agents of disunity”.

However, the statement incensed pro #EndSARS protesters, with the army derided for its inadequacies in containing the real security breaches in the country.

Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai was trending on Nigerian Twitter on Thursday as the attacks mounted in the social media.

Trump’s son Barron tests positive for COVID-19

Barron Trump, the 14 year old son of Melania Trump and US President Donald Trump, was also hit by COVID-19.

Melania Trump revealed this on Wednesday, but added that the boy was asymptomatic.

In a letter the American First Lady shared on Twitter, she said her son initially tested negative, but her “fear came true when he was tested again and it came up positive.”

Melania Trump also said that Barron has since tested negative for the deadly virus.

“Luckily he is a strong teenager and exhibited no symptoms. In one way I was glad the three of us went through this at the same time so we could take care of one another and spend time together.”

The 50 year-old Melania also gave an insight into how she coped with the virus.

She admitted her eventual healing was not an easy journey.

“I was very fortunate as my diagnosis came with minimal symptoms, though they hit me all at once and it seemed to be a roller coaster of symptoms in the days after,” she said.

“I experienced body aches, a cough and headaches, and felt extremely tired most of the time.”

Melania Trump explained why she did not follow Donald Trump to Walter Reed Hospital.

She said she “chose to go a more natural route in terms of medicine, opting more for vitamins and healthy food. We had wonderful caretakers around us and we will be forever grateful for the medical care and professional discretion we received from Dr. Conley and his team.

In addition to thanking the president’s physician Dr. Sean Conley, Melania Trump thanked “first responders everywhere,” and noted how “recovering from an illness gives you a lot of time to reflect.” She said:

“I also thought about the hundreds of thousands of people across our country who have been impacted by this illness that infects people with no discrimination. We are in unprecedented times—and with the election fast approaching, it has been easy to get caught up in so much negative energy.

Melania Trump also happily said that, like the president, she is fully cleared of the coronavirus, and she hopes to return to her official duties as soon as possible.

“Along with this good news, I want people to know that I understand just how fortunate my family is to have received the kind of care that we did,” Melania Trump continued.

“If you are sick, or if you have a loved one who is sick—I am thinking of you and will be thinking of you every day. I pray for our country and I pray for everyone who is grappling with COVID-19 and any other illnesses or challenges.

The monarch also assured that the traditional institution would continue to play its role in supporting the government for a better society.
