Kogi state introduces levy on every loaf of bread

The Kogi state government has introduced a levy on every loaf of bread baked in the state.

The state ministry of commerce and industry said the levy is aimed at improving the internally generated revenue.

But the state chapter of the Association of Master bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN) told TheCable on Thursday that the bakers are against the levy.

An executive member of the association simply identified as Godfirst said the association has begun moves to meet with the consultant the state charged with collecting the fee.

Godfirst said they received a memo from the ministry imposing a levy to be paid “on each loaf of bread” produced.

“The letter was sent to us that a consultant has been given the job to generate fund from bakery to state government; to generate revenue to (for the) state government,” he said.

“We are trying to meet with the consultant but we have not been able to meet with him. We want to meet with him to give us more explanation.”

He said bakers in the state are experiencing hardship occasioned by the pandemic and will not be able to meet the new demand.

“We are not happy about it, presently there is no market. We are facing different types of challenges, and if they are now asking us to pay another tax, we don’t know how we can cope,” he said.

Canada sends message to Nigerians over immigration application and it might not be a ''pleasant'' one

The Canadian Government has informed Nigerians that its immigration office does not accept refugee applications directly from people.

It also noted that only Canadian migration officers can exclusively guarantee approval of immigration applications.

The High Commission, in a tweet, said the notice was important in light of “great interest in Canadian immigration programs” received lately.

It reads in part:

“You cannot apply directly for resettlement. You must be referred to Canada by a designated referral organization or a private sponsor.

“No one can guarantee that your immigration application will be fast-tracked or approved. Only a Canadian migration officer can decide if you can come to Canada.

“All the information you need to apply to visit or migrate to Canada is available free on the official Government of Canada website.”

The Canadian Government has already announced it is targeting welcoming 1.2 million immigrants from 2021 to 2023.

UK serial killer, Peter Sutcliffe dies of coronavirus

The Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe has died from complications arising from Covid-19.

The serial killer died at precisely 1.10 am on Friday morning after his lungs finally collapsed.

Sutcliffe contracted the bug on November 7 in prison. He was put in isolation and monitored closely but refused any treatment for coronavirus.

A Prison Service spokesman said: “HMP Frankland prisoner Peter Coonan (born Sutcliffe) died in hospital on 13 November.

“The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”

Sutcliffe had spent almost 40 years locked up in Broadmoor and prison for murdering 13 women and attempting to kill seven others between 1975 and 1980.

His five-year reign of terror in the north of England led to one of the biggest police manhunts of the 20th century.

Confessing to cops after his eventual arrest, Sutcliffe notoriously claimed he was “a beast” driven on “by a devil” inside him.

A source of his final moments told TheSun UK that: “No tears were shed.

“His death was as pitiful as the vile life he had lived.”

It is understood no formal cause of death has yet been established.

And now, Brymo is out speaking too. Brymo who dropped his 7th studio album in April -- YELLOW-- says it's time people start separating most HYPED ALBUM from BEST ALBUM, saying his YELLOW album dropped in April is the best album of 2020.

In his tweet, he implied Davido's album is juts hype. He even spoke about artistes hyping the record views and all, warning fans to be able to identity a real album from hype one.

We all know, Davido goes all out to promote his works. But who wouldn't? He also has an egde, he is the most followed Nigerian celebrity online! Brymo's tweet below...

Oh wait a minute... Davido's fans also has some words for Brymo... ofcus they got the swipe and came for him. Some of the responses Brymo got below...

Finally, China breaks silence, congratulates Biden, Harris

China on Friday joined other nations to congratulate the United States President-Elect, elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, for their victory in the U.S Presidential race that saw the defeat of President Donald Trump.

Immediately after CNN, FOX News, Al Jazeera, and BBC, projected and announced Biden as winner, countries like UK, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Israel, India, Pakistan, Egypt, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, South Korea, Japan and a number of others sent in goodwill messages, congratulating Biden and Harris for their victory.

Some like Russia, China, Mexico, Turkey, Brazil, Hungary, Iran, North Korea and a good number of others however, refused to congratulate Biden and Harris.

Four days gone and here we are with Wang Wenbin, China Foreign Ministry spokesman, congratulating Biden and Harris for being victorious in the election.

“We respect the American people’s choice.” “We congratulate Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris,” said Wang Wenbin according to Washingtonpost.

At the same time, Wang added, “we understand the U.S. election results will be confirmed based on U.S. law and procedure.”

Fans at next year's Olympics in Japan may be banned from cheering in order to stop the spread of coronavirus

Fans at next summer's Olympics could be banned from cheering under drastic measures being considered by organisers.

Tokyo 2020 bosses are increasingly confident of spectators being allowed into venues when the delayed Games get underway in July 2021.

But they may implement the 'no-scream' guidance that is already in place at Japan's football and baseball stadiums to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus.

'There's a possibility that we may ask the spectators to refrain from shouting and speaking in a loud voice,' admitted Tokyo 2020 chief Toshiro Muto.

'When we think of the impact, we believe it is an item for consideration, to reduce the risk of airborne droplets. But we haven't reached a conclusion.

'We would like to be considerate of the spectators as much as possible while we take preventive measures at the same time to be able to accommodate as many spectators as possible.

'Whether we are going to have full capacity or not, the decision has not been made yet because various experiments are taking place.'

Japan currently imposes a 14-day isolation period on all foreign visitors but that is set to be lifted for athletes and spectators coming to the Olympics, with additional testing and screening introduced instead.

US 2020: Obama says fraud claims undermining democracy

Former President Barack Obama has said senior US Republicans are undermining democracy by going along with President Donald Trump's unsubstantiated claims of election fraud.

In an interview with CBS News, due to air on Sunday, Mr Obama said President-elect Joe Biden had "clearly won" this year's race for the White House.

The result was projected by US media on Saturday but some counting continues.

Claiming ballot tampering, Mr Trump has launched a flurry of legal challenges.

The president's team has yet to provide any evidence to support their claims.

Mr Obama - Mr Trump's Democratic predecessor - said the allegations were motivated by the fact that "the president doesn't like to lose".

"I'm more troubled by the fact that other Republican officials, who clearly know better, are going along with this," he added. "It's one more step in delegitimising not just the incoming Biden administration, but democracy generally, and that's a dangerous path."

Mr Obama was speaking ahead of the release of his new memoir, A Promised Land, which charts his rise to the US Senate and first term as president. Due for release on 17 November, it is the first of two books covering his time in the White House.

Elon Musk ridicules Covid-19 tests carried out on him after conflicting results

Tesla Inc. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk has questioned the accuracy of Covid-19 tests after claiming that results showed he tested positive twice and then negative twice all on the same day.

“Something extremely bogus is going on. Was tested for covid four times today. Two tests came back negative, two came back positive. Same machine, same test, same nurse. Rapid antigen test from BD,” Musk said in a tweet, possibly referring to Becton Dickinson and Co’s rapid antigen test.

Musk, who took rapid antigen tests on Thursday, said he was also awaiting results from polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests from different labs.

When asked by a Twitter user if he showed any symptoms, Musk said he had symptoms of a “typical cold.”

“Nothing unusual so far,” Musk added.

Becton Dickinson, which is one of the major suppliers of COVID-19 antigen tests, said in September it was investigating reports from US nursing homes that its rapid coronavirus testing equipment was producing false-positive results.

Earlier this month, the US Food and Drug Administration said it was alerting clinical laboratory staff and health care providers that false positive results can occur with COVID-19 antigen tests.

Musk had previously criticized coronavirus-related restrictions and lockdowns, referring to those as “fascist” and an infringement on individual liberty.

US election security officials reject Trump's fraud claims

US federal election officials have said the 2020 White House vote was the "most secure in American history", rejecting President Donald Trump's fraud claims.

"There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised," a committee announced.

They spoke out after Mr Trump claimed without proof that 2.7 million votes for him had been "deleted".

He has yet to concede to the president-elect, Democrat Joe Biden.

The result of the 3 November election was projected by all the major US TV networks last weekend.

The BBC now projects that Mr Biden has won Arizona, extending his lead by 11 electoral college votes - he now has 290, with Mr Trump on 217. It is the first time the state has voted Democrat since 1996.

Traffic offence: Lagos court orders forfeiture of 31 vehicles

The Lagos State Mobile Court has ordered the forfeiture of 31 vehicles to the state government over violation of a traffic rule.

The drivers of the vehicle were arraigned by the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) on one count of driving against traffic.

The offence was said to be punishable under Part (III) item 27 of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reformed Law of 2018.

Following the plea of the drivers, the court ordered the forfeiture of their vehicles to the state government.

The court also ordered 43 other drivers to pay various sums as fines to the state government for plying the BRT corridors and causing road obstruction.

Speaking on the judgment, the Chairman of the agency, Olayinka Egbeyemi, noted that only 74 drivers appeared before the court out of the 160 traffic offenders arrested.

Egbeyemi added that the agency acted in response to a series of complaints from members of the public, particularly motorists that activities of one-way drivers were causing gridlock daily since the #EndSARS protest across the state.

He said, “It is painful that with a high level of enlightenment campaigns and several warnings by the government, motorists, including private car owners, are still driving against traffic knowing full well that the penalty for such offence is outright forfeiture of the said vehicle to the government.”

Nigeria records 1,131 NEW CASES of LASSA FEVER

The Federal Government on Thursday expressed concern over the number of new confirmed cases of Lassa virus in Nigeria, saying it has hit 27 states.

While warning of the resurgence of other non-Covid-19 killer diseases like Lassa fever, especially in the dry season, the government said it had increased in the last week to 11 cases this week.

The Minister of State (Health), Dr Olorunnimbe Mamora, said this during the press conference of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19.

According to him, 180 new confirmed cases and two deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours bringing to 64,516, the total number of confirmed cases so far recorded in Nigeria from 697,544 persons tested for Covid – 19.

He said, “A total of 60,737 cases have been treated and discharged while there are currently 2617 active cases currently receiving care at home or in a facility. We have sadly recorded 1,162 deaths with a case fatality rate of 1.8 per cent.

“We are cautiously impressed that the number of active cases is reducing as more persons are being discharged and the recovery rate is increasing.”

He said that while government strived to contain the spread of the disease, it would continue to keep eyes on other diseases that threaten human health.

Ebonyi Commissioner Hon. Lazarus Ogbee RESIGNS

The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Inter-Governmental Affairs, Hon Lazarus Ogbee, has resigned his appointment with the State Government.

Ogbee’s resignation was contained in a letter dated November 12, 2020, titled, “Resignation of Appointment As Honourable Commissioner”.

The Commissioner’s resignation may not be unconnected to Governor David Umahi’s decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party, a party under which he won governorship elections twice, to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

A stalwart of the PDP in the state, who spoke on condition of anonymity, on Thursday night, said Ogbee’s resignation was expected, adding that more Executive Council members would naturally follow suit, soon.

Breaking! NNPC raises petrol depot price, marketers to sell at N168-N170 per litre

The Petroleum Products Marketing Company, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, has increased the ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, to N155.17 per litre from N147.67 per litre.

The PPMC disclosed this in an internal memo with reference number PPMC/C/MK/003, dated November 11, 2020, and signed by Tijjani Ali.

The memo, a copy of which was seen by Punch, said the new ex-depot price would take effect from Friday.

The ex-depot price is the price at which the product is sold by the PPMC to marketers at the depots.

In its PMS price proposal for November, the PPMC put the landing cost of petrol at N128.89 per litre, up from N119.77 per litre in September/October.

It said the estimated minimum pump price of the product would increase to N161.36 per litre from N153.86 per litre.

The National Operation Controller, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr Mike Osatuyi, in a telephone interview with Punch also said the over N7 increase in ex-depot price would translate into an increase in pump prices.

He said, “The implication of the increase in the ex-depot price is that there is going to be an increase in the pump price. We are expecting the pump price to range from N168 to N170 per litre.

“Crude oil price is going up,” he said, noting that the Federal Government has fully deregulated petrol prices.

A medic who stopped for lunch at a hospital cafe has received a nasty surprise after sinking his teeth into a burger to find a dead rat inside.

The staff member at Toowoomba Hospital in southeast Queensland stopped at the hospital's cafe for his break in October.

He only realised something did not taste right after he bit into the burger and then made the stomach-churning discovery of the cooked dead rat.

The picture shows the bread roll, some lettuce leaves and the unmistakable rat with its tail attached.

Darling Downs Health Service, which oversees the hospital, said they were taking the incident extremely seriously.

'Our highest priority is the health and safety of our community, patients, and staff,' a spokesperson said.

'We have been assured that the Wellbean Co cafe operators, the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation, comply with all food and hygiene standards.'

The spokesperson said the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation has been in contact with the supplier and has reviewed their protocols for inspecting and washing ingredients.

'The foundation has had the Toowoomba Regional Council Food Safety Division and our Public Health Unit inspect the cafe, which has been cleared to continue operating.

'The cafe has apologised to the customer and I would like to thank the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation for their immediate and proactive response to this incident.'
