Fight over lady’s love leaves one dead, several injured in Taraba

At least one person has been killed and several others injured in a feud that ensued between youths of two different settlements in the Water Board area of Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.

The clash, which was said to have been triggered on Sunday as a result of a fight between two young men over a lady’s love at a party hall, also led to the destruction of properties worth millions of naira.

This degenerated to a crisis when one of the young men hired thugs to inflict mayhem on the other, who in turn, called on friends to assist in fighting back.

Houses and worship centres were destroyed while vehicles were burnt, and shops looted in the wake of the crisis.

It took the intervention of security operatives before the tension in the area was doused.

A businessman who specialises in a bread bakery, Salihu Sale, decried that he was affected by the clash between the youth groups.

He told Channels Television that after the fight broke out, he fled for safety along with his workers only for then to return to pack what was left of his bakery.

“This incident started four days ago as a minor scuffle without notice. It then degenerated into a fight between youths of two communities over a lady.

“It later became a religious fight between Christian and Muslim youths. They broke my doors and windows, but fortunately, security operatives arrived and took control of the situation and that is why I am here to pack what is left of my bakery,” he said.

Another eyewitness, Ezekiel Ali, said he saw the lifeless bodies of two youths on the ground after the fight.

“Although I am not a specialist, from what I saw, one of the victims was hit by bullets because we saw holes in his body,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Azare, who visited the area condemned the incident.

He stated that only one person was killed during the crisis, adding that the police have made a few arrests in connection with the crisis.

“From the report gathered by my men on the ground, only one person was confirmed killed with many injured and receiving treatment at the hospital,” he said.

Borno massacre: US reacts, vows to work with Nigeria to defeat terrorism

The United States on Monday reacted to Saturday’s massacre of 43 farmers by Boko Haram at a rice farm in Borno, Northeast Nigeria.

The US condemned the brutal killing and sympathised with families of those killed.

“The United States condemns in the strongest terms the November 28 violent attack in Borno, Nigeria.

“The United States offers our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those killed or kidnapped,” a statement from the US Embassy in Nigeria said.

The statement said the US abhorred the attack and pledged to work with Nigeria to defeat terrorism.

“These abhorrent attacks are a stark reminder of why the United States stands with the Nigerian government and people as they fight to defeat terrorism and work to bring the perpetrators to justice,” it said.

Boko Haram terrorists had on Saturday slaughtered 43 farm workers near Maiduguri, Borno, Northeast Nigeria.

The assailants reportedly tied up the agricultural workers and slit their throats in the village of Koshobe.

Nigerian banker behind bars since 2011 bags 5 years jail term

Justice T. B. Adegoke of the Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State today November 30, 2020, sentenced Onus Osagie Amahian, a former staff of Access Bank, to five years imprisonment.

Amahian was prosecuted by the Benin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a 25-count charge bordering on forgery and making false entry into Delta State Government payroll.

A former IT officer of Access Bank, the defendant was said to have between August and October 2011 fraudulently inserted names and account numbers of his family members and friends into the payroll schedule of Delta State government being handled by Access bank and subsequently paid monies into those Accounts and withdrew same and in the process defrauded the Bank of an aggregate sum of Nine Million, Three Hundred and Forty-Four Thousand, Nineteen Naira and Twenty Three Kobo (N 9, 344,019.23).

Amahian was first arraigned in 2011 and pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the 25-count charges preferred against him by the EFCC, setting the stage for a full trial.

However, on November 19, 2020, he changed his plea from ‘not guilty’ to ‘guilty’. This prompted the prosecuting counsel, F.O. Dibang to ask the court to convict and sentence him accordingly. Justice Adegoke convicted him on all counts but reserved sentencing till today.

In his judgment, Justice Adegoke took cognizance of the fact that a substantial amount of money was recovered from the defendant during the investigation and had been in the Nigerian Correctional Centre since 2011 and shown remorse for his actions.

He, therefore, sentenced the defendant to 5years imprisonment on each of the counts. The sentences shall run concurrently and shall commence from the date of arrest.

One of the counts read: “that you Onus Osagie Amahian between the month of August and October 2011 at Access Bank Branch Asaba within the jurisdiction of this honorable court did steal the sum of Nine Million Three Hundred and Forty-Four Thousand, Thirteen Naira Twenty Three Kono (N9,344,013.23) only from Delta State Government payroll (NEFT/ DTSG/.TCO/ ACC ) in Access Bank PLC branch Asaba and thereby committed an offense punishable under Section 390(6) of the criminal Act CAp C38 of the Revised Edition ( Laws of the Federation of Nigeria) 2007”.

Nigeria denied weapons, will remain at mercy of terrorists – Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Monday, in Makurdi, the Benue State capital explained the reason why Boko Haram activities may continue unabated, saying that Nigeria has been denied access to acquire adequate weapons to fight terrorists.

Speaking to journalists after he paid a courtesy visit on the state governor, Samuel Ortom, at the government house, Mohammed said “Nigerians will remain at the mercy of terrorists”.

The minister described the killing of rice farmers as ‘unfortunate’ but noted that to decimate the terrorist group, the country needed more support from global partners as well as acquiring adequate weapons to fight them.

The minister said, “When we talk about terrorism, people don’t seem to appreciate that terrorism is not a local issue, it is a global issue and there is no part of the world that doesn’t experience its own pocket of terrorism.

“But you must also note that we are dealing with terrorists who are financed globally and we also need more support from global partners, for instance, Nigeria has made an attempt to acquire a better and more effective platform to deal with terrorists but for one reason or the other we have been denied this platform, these weapons and without adequate weapons or platform we remain at the mercy of terrorists.

The minister further said, “You see fighting terrorists is not a joke because what actually happened in Borno State is unfortunate but you must also look at the strategy of the terrorists.

“Terrorists use media and publicity as oxygen, so when they go on this kind of mindless killing of people. It is not that the government is not doing enough, terrorism whether in Afghanistan or anywhere in the world has the same concept, a group of people who are extremist in their thoughts who don’t think that you and me should be alive.”

8 year-old girl electrocuted by faulty christmas decorations

A schoolgirl has been killed at a Christmas lights switch-on when she was struck by a high-voltage blast of electricity, as she stood with her family.

Julia Franco was photographed moments before she was electrocuted, happily enjoying the festivities in Caldas Novas, Brazil at the weekend.

The eight-year-old touched a piece of exposed metal, unaware that a faulty wire had made the entire installation live.

Her mother, Rejany Honoria de Almeida, said her daughter was happy the day that she took the pictures and she still cannot come to terms with the fact that a short while later she was electrocuted.

She said: "What was supposed to be a family outing has become a tragedy."

The parents and their three children had been looking forward to seeing the Christmas decorations at Mestre Orlando Square and arrived around 30 minutes before they were due to be switched on.

The mother said she took the photo of Julia and then let the children run around and play, which was when she touched the live surface and was electrocuted.

She added: "Julia was so happy.

"When the children were playing close to a metal structure that was going to be a tunnel of lights, she put her hand inside and it got stuck there."

Initially, onlookers managed to resuscitate the girl and she was rushed to hospital, but died shortly afterwards.

The mum added: "My husband picked her up and called the ambulance. She was taken to hospital, but had a massive heart attack.

"She was taken by God."

The police revealed that council staff had been responsible for setting up the Christmas decorations and were cooperating over the ongoing investigation.

They said that trained workers who had been doing the same job for 10 years were responsible for the entire installation.

Local tourism chiefs said the lights will stay off until additional experts arrive to inspect everything.

The investigation continues.

The Poison singer was seen arriving at Casa Cruz restaurant in London's Notting Hill on Saturday night, dressed in a silver dress and fur coat for the bash.

Barcelona fined €3,000 after Messi dedicated goal to Maradona

Barcelona will have to pay a €3,000 fine, after captain Lionel Messi paid tribute to Diego Maradona, by celebrating in a Newell’s Old Boys shirt on Sunday, SportsMail reports.

Messi celebrated his goal against Osasuna, by taking off Barcelona’s blue-and-burgundy strip to reveal the red-and-black of Newell’s.

Maradona, who passed away last week at the age of 60, played for Newell’s at the end of his glittering career.

Messi also wore the same shirt at the start of his career, making it a fitting tribute.

But the emotional tribute was against the rules of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, who are now poised to fine Barca for Messi’s celebration.

After the game, Messi posted a photo of his tribute alongside an older image of Maradona in the same shirt, adding the message “Farewell, Diego” in Spanish.

We need to assess the physical and mental capability of President Buhari — Oby Ezekwesili

A Former minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has called for an assessment of the physical and mental capability of President Muhammadu Buhari over the affairs of the nation.

Ezekweili demanded that a medical panel be set up to assess the President, adding that the condition of Nigeria has become too grave for citizens to sit still.

The former Minister said this on her official Twitter page, stressing that the State house physician cannot be trusted hence the need for an independent panel.

Her posts read: “I think that at this stage and depth of fragility of the Nigeria-State, Privacy has to yield ground to our right to know as citizens, the state of health of Buhari.

“We really must assess the physical or mental capability of Nigeria’ President to carry on the duties of office.

“Citizens can collectively push for an Independent Panel to help us make the critical medical determination of the state of mind and body of our President Buhari.

“The conditions of Nigeria have become too grave for us all to sit still and watch a train wreck in the making.

“As an extremely concerned citizen, I hereby demand for a Medical Panel on Buhari since we obviously cannot trust the State House Physician to provide us accurate information. ”

Ezekwesili emphasised that a mental and physical assessment is important as Nigerians need full disclosure before the situation in the country worsens.

“It is reasonable demand now for citizens to have full disclosure on the state of health of Buhari,” Ezekwesili tweeted.

'Pandemic' is named as 2020's Word of the Year

In what would have been unthinkable a year ago to what seems like a fairly obvious choice now, Merriam-Webster announced on Monday that its Word of the Year is “pandemic.”

“Sometimes a single word defines an era, and it’s fitting that in this exceptional -- and exceptionally difficult -- year, a single word came immediately to the fore as we examined the data that determines what our Word of the Year will be,” Merriam-Webster said in its announcement.

According to the publishing company, the first big spike for people looking up the word “pandemic” happened on Feb. 3 -- the same day that the first COVID-19 patient was released from a Seattle hospital -- when searches for the word skyrocketed by 1,621% more compared to the same time the year before.

Searches for the word, however, according to Merriam-Webster, had actually been slowly increasing since Jan. 20 -- the same day as the first positive case of COVID-19 occurred in the U.S.

“People were clearly paying attention to the news and to early descriptions of the nature of this disease,” the publishing company said. “That initial February spike in lookups didn’t fall off -- it grew. By early March, the word was being looked up an average of 4,000% over 2019 levels. As news coverage continued, alarm among the public was rising.”

The company said that the single largest spike in searches for the word “pandemic” happened -- perhaps unsurprisingly -- on March 11 when the World Health Organization officially declared “COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic.”

Cleric “caught in bed with married woman” loses marriage

An Igando Customary Court in Lagos State on Monday dissolved the 15-year-old marriage of a cleric, Yusuf Adeniyi, over infidelity.

Yusuf’s wife, Rebecca, 44, sought the dissolution of the marriage, saying that she caught him cheating on her.

Rebecca claimed that she caught her 47-year-old husband with a married woman on their matrimonial bed.

The Court President, Mr Adeniyi Koledoye, granted the request, saying that the petitioner insisted on divorce.

“The court is left with no option than to grant your prayer and hereby pronounces the union dissolved.

“The court hereby pronounces the marriage between Mrs Rebecca Adeniyi and Mr Yusuf Adeniyi dissolved.

“Both of you henceforth cease to be husband and wife.

“Each of you should go on his or her separate ways unmolested; the court wishes both of you well in your future endeavours,” he said.

Koledoye ordered Yusuf to be responsible for their children’s feeding, education and general welfare.

Rebecca had also told the court that Yusuf had extramarital affairs with both single and married women.

“I caught him having sexual intercourse with one. I grabbed the woman and tore her clothes.

“I raised alarm; he started begging me not to expose the woman.

“My husband’s behaviour toward me changed after the incident. He no longer gave me money nor cared for me,” she submitted.

The 44-year-old mother of four also claimed that her husband was fetish, saying that he married her with charm.

“I was under the influence of charm in my marriage with Yusuf.

“The wool was pulled off my eyes five years ago but I decided to remain in the marriage because of my children.”

According to her, when her father died, Yusuf did not go for the burial.

Rebecca told the court that she was fed up with the marriage.

Responding, Yusuf admitted having an extramarital affair with a married woman but blamed it on the devil.

“I begged my wife to forgive me but she refused and raised alarm,” he told the court.

The respondent, however, denied being fetish, saying that he never married his wife with any charm.

“It is my wife that is fetish. She frequently visits herbalists and comes home with different substances.”

He prayed the court not to dissolve the marriage, saying that he still loved Rebecca.
