Ebonyi commissioner who stands as Anyim’s surety pulls out citing Maina-Ndume case

Ekumankama Nkama has written to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on his decision to withdraw as the surety of Anyim Pius Anyim, former secretary to the government of the federation (SGF).

Nkama, commissioner of investment & Abuja liaison, Ebonyi state government, disclosed this in a letter dated November 30 and addressed to the anti-graft agency.

Anyim, former senate president, is under investigation by the EFCC for reportedly using firms in which he had interest to award contracts to the tune of N13 billion from the Ecological Fund Account domiciled in his office.

The commission is also investigating how Anyim spent the sum of N520 million he allegedly collected from the office of the national security adviser under Sambo Dasuki on the eve of the 2015 presidential election.

He was arrested in November 2017 and later granted bail, with Nkama standing as his surety.

But the commissioner said recent events have compelled him to withdraw as surety to Anyim, citing the case of Ali Ndume,  senator representing Borno south, and Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT).

Maina is being prosecuted by the EFCC for alleged money laundering to the tune of N2 billion.

Ndume had agreed to stand as surety for Maina who is facing trial on 12 counts of alleged money laundering, a decision he would later regret.

One of the terms of the bail is for the senator to accompany the defendant to court on every date fixed for trial.

But Maina, who was released on July 28 after spending nine months in Kuje prison, went into hiding and refused to appear in court since his trial resumed on September 29.

In November, a federal high court in Abuja ordered that Ndume be remanded over the disappearance of Maina.

Maina was eventually arrested in Niger Republic on Monday and extradited to Nigeria.

Nkama said his decision to withdraw as surety for Anyim would avail him the peace of mind he needs to discharge his duties.

He also cited “recent events” in his state as reason for his decision.

David Umahi, governor of Ebonyi, and Anyim have been at loggerheads since Umahi defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Last Wednesday, Umahi sacked his political appointees from Ivo local government area of the state where Anyim hails from.

“I, Ekumankama, Joseph Nkama, commissioner of investment & Abuja liaison, Ebonyi state government, wish to formally withdraw as surety for his excellency, senator Anyim Pius Anyim,” Nkama wrote.

“You may recall, sir, that senator Anyim Pius Anyim was detained while under investigation and when granted bail conditions by commission, I availed myself as his surety knowing fully well the adverse effect his action and inaction could impose on my constitutional rights should he decide to act in a manner devoid of the expectations of him by the commission.

“Sir, I regret to inform you that recent events in the last two weeks in my state has given me food for thought and my conscience could no longer allow me to continue to stand as a surety for senator Pius Anyim.

“I have also considered the recent event involving Senator Ali Ndume and Mr Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the defunct pension reform task team, I am most particularly convinced that my decision to withdraw as surety will best grant me the needed peace to function effectively in all responsibilities demanded of me”, his letter read.

Kanye West becomes Billboard's Top Gospel Artist Of 2020

This is great! The rapper's gospel albums and Sunday Service Choir have helped make him the leading force in gospel music this year.

We may not have heard much from Kanye West's Sunday Service Choir once the rap mogul announced his bid for the presidency, but that doesn't mean that he hasn't been a leading force in the gospel circuit.

West however, been making waves in the gospel arena—most recently taking home four Billboard Music awards in gospel categories.

Billboard has now released their end of the year tallies, and Kanye West is celebrating a big win as the Top Gospel Artist of 2020.

The outlet broke down how that happened for the Yeezy mogul, as his Jesus Is King and Jesus is Born projects were staples on the charts throughout the year. The Sunday Service Choir was named Top Gospel Group of the year by Billboard, while West's songs "Follow God" and his Travis Scott-assisted "Wash Us in the Blood" dominated the Hot Gospel Songs chart.

GO KANYE!!!

'SOS: '70 Nigerians illegally detained without trial in Bangladesh''

No fewer than 70 Nigerians have been allegedly arrested and detained without trial by security operatives in Bangladesh.

The Nigerian Community Association in Bangladesh, which made the disclosure in a letter to The Punch, said there was a crackdown on Nigerians in the South Asian country.

The letter was signed by a representative of the group, Gideon Onyeoma.

Onyeoma said the indiscriminate arrest of Nigerians, including legal residents doing business in the foreign country, had caused undue hardship and pain to the victims.

Onyeoma said, “Since June 2020, more than 70 Nigerians have been arrested by the security operatives in Bangladesh with no evidence and with no proper chance for bail.

“In July 2020, the police operatives went to arrest a Nigerian suspect. After the arrest, they forced him to take them to where other Nigerians live and he took them to a Nigerian man’s firm around the area, thinking that he would be saved, only for them to arrest all 15 men in the office.

“These men all came from Nigeria legally to Bangladesh earlier in 2020 before the pandemic started to buy garment products to be sent home to Nigeria, but because of the pandemic and the lockdown, they couldn’t travel back.

“The next thing they saw was being arrested by the police, while packing their goods at the cargo company owned by a Nigerian, Mr Uche. Uche himself was also taken away by the operatives, making 16 Nigerians. Till date, they are still in jail without bail.”

He noted that shortly after that incident, another set of Nigerian businessmen were ambushed in their houses and whisked away by another security outfit, the Rapid Action Battalion.

RAB is an elite anti-crime and anti-terrorism unit of the country’s police force.

Onyeoma said they were all accused of not possessing travel documents.

He said the President of the Nigerian community, Mr Frank Jacob, provided the suspects’ passports and sought the help of the immigration service to provide proof of their arrival in the country.

The move was reported to have angered the security agents, who still refused to release the suspects on bail.

He added, “In July 2020, another set of Nigerians, 12 of them, were arrested on the account of looking for one person.

“The worst of it happened when a Nigerian was arrested by the security agents for no reason. This particular arrest made the Nigerian community leader to go to the security agents’ office to enquire about the Nigerian.

“That day, August 5, he went there with another exco member of the association and was detained till date.

“The security agents know that the person fighting for justice for Nigerians is Mr Frank, the community leader; that is the reason why he was detained and kept in jail since.”

Onyeoma said lately, the immigration service had been seizing Nigerian passports, claiming that the owners had fake Bangladesh visas.

He said Nigerians were losing their businesses and warned that if the Federal Government did not intervene, things could degenerate.

11-Year-old boy shoots himself dead during zoom class

An 11-year-old California boy tragically shot and killed himself during an online Zoom class.

The child was identified as Adan Llanos, who was attending his virtual sixth grade class at Woodbridge Elementary School in San Joaquin County when he turned the gun on himself with the camera and microphone turned off.

His sister, who was online learning in another room, found him and told a neighbor and her teacher, who called for help.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene shortly after 11am after receiving several calls reporting that a person has been shot.

Deputies responded to the home where the children were learning, on the 300 block of Sterling Street in Woodbridge, and found the child with a head injury.

He was rushed to a hospital and died from his self-inflicted injuries. The sheriff's office said the boy's family was at his side at the hospital before he passed away.

Luis Llano, who identified himself as Adan's uncle, denied claims that the boy had committed suicide in a Facebook tribute.

He said that Adan was not suicidal but did not offer further details about what might have happened.

'It is with a heavy heart that we inform everyone that on December 2 my nephew; Adan Manuel Llanos, has passed and is in heaven,' the tribute read.

'He was a wonderful child full of life and joy. He was the most respectful and sweetest boy I've ever had the honor of calling my nephew! I ask of guys to please help our family in need, if at least share the post! We ask of you all to please refrain from any speculation and if you see any comments politely ask them to only say positive things.

'He was not suicidal! This young man was an angel that we had the privilege of knowing!'

Bauchi State Governor accuses FRSC of extorting money from motorists

The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has warned officers and men of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state to desist from extorting money from motorists.

He gave the warning in a speech at the distribution of the second batch of 655 tricycles and 154 commercial buses as part of the state’s economic empowerment programme to reduce unemployment.

The governor said he would collaborate with the Bauchi State House of Assembly and the state Chief Judge to come up with executive orders to regulate law enforcement agencies operating in the state.

He said, “I want to call on law enforcing agencies like the Federal Road Safety Corps. I have noticed that sometimes, they stay within the town and they will just be collecting money from drivers; I will not allow that.”

Woman cycles around London without clothes to raise money for mental health charities

A bold woman is raising thousands of pounds for mental health by cycling around London almost n.a.k.e.d.

Kerri Barnes, 25, cycled past London's Covent Garden, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace wearing nothing but glitter across her chest and a nude thong.

After braving the cold and prying eyes from strangers on November 29, she has so far raised an impressive £8,425 for Mind charity, which experienced its largest ever increase in helpline calls during the nation's first lockdown.

Kerri, a partnerships manager for a tech start-up, felt compelled to act after seeing shocking mental health statistics and tragically losing her cousin Carly to suicide in 2011, at the age of 20.

She added that during the first lockdown, someone close to her attempted to take their own life three times.

'The news shook me to my absolute core, and it was a painful time for all involved,' she explained.

'I'm beyond lucky to say that this person is in recovery now, but my heart goes out to everyone who wasn't so fortunate, and everyone who continues to struggle.'

Kerri told Mail Online: 'As we went into a second lockdown I was worried about what it would mean for my family and everyone else.

'So I decided I had to do something to raise awareness of suicide prevention and to raise money for Mind.

'My housemate joked that a naked bike ride would catch people’s attention. Don’t think she actually expected me to do it!

'The last three weeks of fundraising have been quite a journey. So many people have come forward to share their stories with me, so I am hopeful that by opening up a conversation that we can better support one another and save some lives in the process.'

Asked how she felt afterwards, Kerri admitted she was 'very cold', but had 'the warm fuzzies that we’d achieved something really good'.

'The support from my friends really carried me the whole way,' she said. 'Remember to reach out to your friends, family, colleagues, acquaintances and strangers.

'Be that support line. Your warmth could save a life.'

Court frees nurse accused of killing Davido's uncle, Isiaka Adeleke

Alfred Aderibigbe, a personal nurse to Davido's uncle and ex-Osun State Governor, Isiaka Adeleke, arraigned for killing the politician was on Thursday  discharged and acquitted by the court.

Aderibigbe, who treated the late Adeleke before his death, had been dragged before an Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo, after a coroner inquest indicted him of administering drug overdose on the deceased.

But Justice Ayo Oyebiyi in his judgement today, after the trial that lasted almost two and half years, declared that the prosecution could not prove that Aderibigbe killed the deceased and subsequently discharged him of any wrongdoing.

Upon his first arraignment before the court on on June 8, 2018, Aderibigbe pleaded not guilty to murder charge pressed against him.

The offence he was accused of was said to be contrary to section 316 and punishable under section 319 of the Criminal Code Law Cap.36 Law of Osun State 2003.

During the trial, Aderibigbe told the court that the drugs he administered were given to him by the deceased.

But one of the nine witnesses called by the prosecution team led by Acting Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Dapo Adeniji, and the then Chief Medical Director of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Akeem Lasisi, told the court that the late Adeleke died of drug overdose.

However, Soji Oyetayo, who appeared for the defendant, insisted that the prosecution failed to properly investigate the matter.

He said none of the witnesses called by the prosecution was at the scene of the alleged crime or visited the scene, adding that the prosecution did not retrieve the doctor’s prosecution that was in the custody of the late Adeleke to further prove its case.

According to him, Adeleke was in need of medical attention before the defendant was invited to attend to him, stressing that the late politician was suffering from hypertension and gout.

Justice Oyebiyi, after considering all sides to the matter, discharged and acquitted the defendant.
