Police invade court, re-arrest protesters charged with plot to oust Buhari, Emmanuel

A legal practitioner, Inibehe Effiong, has condemned “the desecration” of the judiciary in Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday, in a case involving President Muhammadu Buhari and Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel.

Four citizens, who took part in a peaceful protest led by End Bad Governance Initiative, were arrested by the Police on Tuesday outside Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

They are Idopise Ette Oton, Obot MfonGod, God’sfriend Michael and Victor Nta George.

The group had gone to the legislature to express their dissatisfaction with bad leadership, ASUU strike, freezing of accounts of End SARS protesters, border closure, increment in electricity tariff and fuel pump price, among others.

The demonstrators also kicked against the provisions in the 2021 budget presented to the House by Emmanuel.

In a statement on Thursday, Effiong said they were “illegally charged before the Magistrate’s Court in Uyo presided over by Chief Magistrate Winifred Umohandy with fraudulent, malicious and frivolous charge of forming intention to overthrow President Buhari and Governor Emmanuel.”

He noted that upon their arraignment, objection was raised to the competence of the treasonable felony charge on the ground that the Magistrate’s Court lacks jurisdiction.

Chief Magistrate Winifred Umohandy struck out the charge and discharged the four protesters.

Effiong said as the Magistrate stepped into her chambers, policemen invaded the courtroom located at Fulga Street, Off Ikot Ekpene Road, Uyo, brutalized the citizens and took them away.

“The protesters, who were freed by the court are still in the custody of the police. This shameful action by governor Udom Emmanuel is only the latest in a string of dictatorial actions that Mr Udom Emmanuel has carried out since he came to office.

“It is shameful that Udom Emmanuel, who pretends to be an opposition leader in the country, has desecrated the hallowed temple of justice in his bid to quell all forms of dissent in the State.

“It is distasteful that the recently posted Police Commissioner, CP Amiengheme Andrew, has reduced the State Police Command to a political weapon for corrupt politicians, and allowed himself to be used as tool by the governor to witch-hunt citizens who are merely exercising their rights under the Nigerian Constitution.”

The lawyer demanded the immediate release of the protesters.

He urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), civil society, human rights activists, the media, and the international community to rescue Akwa Ibom people and “halt the reign of terror of the Emmanuel-led regime.”

Aww... teary! Noticed how RRS men have been of BEST BEHAVIOUR?

Wawawu! Lagos will miss him. Lagosians will miss him. Most people can testify how RRS men have helped them one way or the other. From catching petty thieves right in the act, helping stranded lagosians in the middle of the night, or do we talk about how robbery has almost automatically stopped on 3rd mainland bridge because RRS men can show up at any moment?

He will indeed be missed!

#EndSARS: Retired police officer accused of murder sues judicial panel

A retired chief superintendent of police (CSP), Carol Afegbai, has sued the Edo State Judicial Panel of Inquiry for victims of SARS and related abuses for issuing a warrant of arrest against her after she failed to appear before it

Recall the the panel had ordered the arrest of Mrs Afegbai for failing to appear before it.

The panel had summoned Mrs Afegbai over her alleged complicity in the murder of Ibrahim Momodu, a student of the University of Benin, in 2015.

She was the divisional police officer of Ogida police station in Benin City when Mr Momodu, a 500-level student of the Faculty of Laboratory Science, was killed close to his family house at No 1, Igbobaewaye Street, off Siluko Road by Textile Mill junction.

The chairperson of the panel, Ada Ehigiamusoe, had, while issuing the arrest order, said, “It is of the view therefore of this panel that the respondent having failed to appear before the said panel, a warrant of arrest should be issued against her to appear before the said panel.”

She added, “Accordingly, it is hereby ordered that a warrant of arrest be issued forthwith on the said respondent who is named Carol Afegbai who shall appear before this panel following the order of this panel on the 9th day of December 2020.”

However, when the panel resumed hearing on Wednesday, Mrs Ehigiamusoe, a retired judge, told Jefferson Uwoghiren, counsel to the family of late Mr Momodu, that the panel had been served a court paper from the High Court restraining it from inviting Mrs Afegbai.

Mrs Ehigiamusoe disclosed that the panel would honour the court’s restraining order to demonstrate to Nigerians that the panel has respect for the nation’s judiciary.

Reacting to the development, Mr Uwoghiren described the action of Mrs Afegbai as an ambush.

GOP leadership rejects resolution acknowledging Biden as President-elect

Congressional Republican leaders rejected a resolution that asserted that Joe Biden is president-elect, the latest effort by the Hill GOP to refuse to accept the election results even though it's been clear for weeks that President Donald Trump lost.

The rejection came Tuesday in a private meeting after House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer offered a motion to affirm that it is preparing for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Rules Committee Chairman Roy Blunt of Missouri voted with House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy in blocking the motion, effectively preventing the inaugural committee from publicly accepting that the upcoming inauguration will be for Biden. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, the ranking Democrat on the Rules Committee, voted with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Hoyer voting in favor.

"The extent to which Republicans are refusing to accept the outcome of the election and recognize Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as our next President and Vice President is astounding," Hoyer said in a statement. "Their continued deference to President Trump's post-election temper tantrums threatens our democracy and undermines faith in our system of elections ... Republicans are refusing even to allow (Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies) to say that President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris will be inaugurated on January 20, even when there is no serious dispute over that fact."

The vote comes as Republicans on Capitol Hill have repeatedly refused to recognize that the next President of the United States will be Biden. Hoyer told reporters he could not speculate why Republicans voted against the measure, however.

"You'll have to ask them, you'll have to ask them," Hoyer said when pressed on if Republicans voted against the motion because it recognized Biden as President-elect.

Three arrested as cattle rustlers attack Amotekun Corps in Ondo, weapons recovered

Two suspected cattle rustlers and one herdsman were on Wednesday arrested by the men of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, otherwise known as Amotekun Corps.

The arrests were made following an attack by the suspects on operatives of the corps.

Equally, men of the security agency seized 16 cows that destroyed farmers’ crops at Osi Community in Akure North Local Government Area of the state while one unlicensed gun and other weapons were recovered from them.

According to the Commander of the Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, who disclosed the arrest at the agency’s headquarters in Akure, it was surprising to his men that rather than heed the advice of stopping their cattle from further destroying the crops on the farmland, the herders began to attack Amotekun officers during which one of them was overpowered and arrested with sixteen of the ravaging cows.

Narrating how the cattle rustlers were arrested, the commander said the men, were apprehended, with the aid of intelligence.

Adeleye said Amotekun had also recovered a NISSAN Serena Bus marked LAGOS FJ 423 KRD, brought by the suspected rustlers to steal cows belonging to one Alhaji Ilyasu.

“Alhaji Ilyasu, a Fulani man, came to us and complained that some people came with a Serena Bus to steal their cattle. They came to us and we sent our men out. We were able to recover the vehicle they wanted to use in stealing the cows, we also recovered the cows.

“We were able to trace some of the rustlers that ran away to somewhere in Ogun State. We have apprehended one Sudauna Gombe and one Ogunyale Sola, who was the driver of the abandoned Serena Bus

“We have handed them over to the Agro Department of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, for detailed investigation.

“The cattle rustling case occurred near NIROWI forest along Ore-Lagos Road before step-down in Omotosho.

“We recovered two cows, which we have returned to the Fulani man that owns them, and we brought the vehicle to our office here because the rustlers ran away and abandoned the vehicle. But we were able to arrest those involved and they had confessed that they had been in the trade for some time.”

Adeleye also said that the Amotekun Corps, have arrested one Lawal Abubakar along Ago Panu Forest near Owo on the way to Ose while in possession of a gun without a license.

He said the suspect would be handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Commander said the security agency has held a series of meetings with the Miyetti Allah leaders from Ondo, Ekiti and Osun States to educate them that Amotekun is for them all.
