Lagos Approves N1Billion COVID-19 Loan For Hospitality Business

Lagos Supports Hospitality Industry With N1bn
Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos state governor, has approved the release of N1 billion as seed capital for investment to those in tourism business in the state.

He said the investment was required to bolster the hospitality sector by providing key operators with soft loans to boost their capacity in driving growth.

The governor spoke on Wednesday at the 6th Lagos Corporate Assembly at the State House, Alausa.

Sanwo-Olu observed that the initiative was necessary to position tourism business as a new frontier for job creation and economic prosperity in the post-COVID-19 era.

He said, “We have just given approval for N1bn support that will be given out through the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund to support hospitality business in the state. The beneficiaries of this fund will go through screening in line with the requirement of the agency. We are making this investment because of the huge potential for job creation and inclusive growth this sector can bring about.

“We will be working with the CBN for more funding to fully develop the potential of our tourism sector. This effort is being completed with the rolling out of 3,000km optical fibre across the state to provide technological infrastructure for the MSMEs whose operations would depend on fast Internet networks to drive their businesses.”

Magu Ordered My Detention For Demanding ₦763 Million Legal Fee - Top SAN

Magu Ordered My Detention For Demanding ₦763 Million Legal Fee
A former prosecutor with the EFCC, Chief Godwin Obla (SAN), says the agency under the leadership of its suspended acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, has refused to pay him a joint sum of N763.9m in legal fees.

He, however, said amid several demands for his pay, Magu ordered his detention and prosecution on trumped up charges of bribing a judge.

Obla said this while reading out an 18-page letter to the Justice Ayo Salami-led Presidential panel titled, ‘Presentation In Respect of Malicious and Reckless Abuse of State Power of Investigation and Prosecution Resulting in Mismanagement of Forfeited Assets by Deliberate and Contrived Incompetence and Suspicious Dealing of Forfeited Assets’.

The senior advocate testified before the panel in the presence of Magu at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa on Monday. He also presented 12 questions to the panel which he said the suspended EFCC chairman must answer and made five recommendations

Obla, who presented over 10 documents to the panel including his bill of charges, said he prosecuted 40 cases for the EFCC including those of former bank chiefs sacked by the Central Bank of Nigeria under the leadership of Lamido Sanusi and also helped the commission recover hundreds of billions of naira in cash and assets.

He said, “As of date, the EFCC owes me an outstanding balance of N685, 389, 928.10 and $202,460.47 (N78.5m) or its naira equivalent at the prevailing Central Bank of Nigeria exchange rate, together with interest at prime lending rate, being professional fees for the prosecution of over 40 high profile cases. See Statement of Claim in Suit No: FCT/CV/3220/17 BETWEEN Obla v. EFCC.”

The senior advocate said all subsequent letters sent to the EFCC were ignored but the fee was never contested. He said rather than pay him his legal fees, Magu decided to level several allegations against him in order to discredit and deny him his due.

“In effect, Ibrahim Magu deliberately and maliciously denied me the fruits of my services for EFCC whilst putting me to great expense to defend a worthless charge,” the lawyer said.

The senior advocate, who helped the EFCC to secure the conviction of a former Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Temisan Omatseye, in 2016, said he in the course of the case which lasted for six years, he travelled from his base in Abuja to Lagos several times and made 46 court appearances but was not paid a penny.

He said despite securing the conviction for the EFCC, Magu accused him of bribing Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia to secure the conviction.

Obla said, “I have never made any payment of N5m or any other amount to Justice Ajumogobia. To the best of my recollection, the payment of N5m under reference was a payment I made on May 21, 2015 to a company named Nigel & Colive Nig. Ltd, for the purchase of building materials for my construction site in Abuja (now my present office building).

“At that material time of this commercial transaction and till date, I had no prior knowledge that Justice Ajumogobia had any interest whatsoever in the company.”

The senior advocate said based on the allegations, he was informed by EFCC prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo, that Magu, had personally directed that he be detained and he remained in custody for 21 days before he was subsequently arraigned alongside the judge.

The senior advocate called on the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), to ensure that the frivolous criminal charges brought against him were withdrawn.

Obla said after he received a letter of disengagement from the EFCC, he turned in all files and gave his professional opinion on how to ensure that the cases continue seamlessly.

He said unfortunately, the lackadaisical manner in which most of the matters had been handled either indicate that the matters had been compromised or constructively withdrawn or abandoned like the N18bn pension fraud case involving the Head of Service.

The senior advocate said Magu went ahead to unceremoniously redeploy the Head of Legal Department, Chile Okoroma, who was assigned those cases.

Obla added, “Secondly, material evidence, which we returned to EFCC custody, were seemingly, withheld from him as he severally reached out to my office for help. Next, when it seemed that Mr. Chile was gaining some traction with the pension fraud cases, Ibrahim Magu conveniently despatched Mr. Chile off to National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, thus foisting a constructive abandonment of the pension fraud cases.

“In 2016, when Ibrahim Magu took over the files, those pension fraud cases were all part-heard in various courts of the Federal High Court, Abuja. Today, most of those cases are now in limbo and constructively abandoned.

“It has been suggested that one of the reasons why the Pension Fraud prosecutions have been stalled/frustrated has to do with the interest of one Alhaji Ali Abatcha who is a kinsman of Ibrahim Magu. The said Alhaji Ali Abatcha was the president of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners and was undergoing prosecution by myself before Mr. Magu took over. The status of this case and others should be reviewed.”

When contacted on the telephone, a lawyer to Magu, Tosin Ojaomo, said it was unfortunate that the panel could invite someone facing corruption charges to testify against Magu.

Ojaomo admitted that Obla was being owed funds but said the EFCC had to verify the fee before payment could be made.

“Really it’s inexplicable, unexplainable, strange and the height of absurdity for a panel on a serious matter like this kind of investigation to be inviting suspects standing trial to testify against their prosecutor.

“The salami panel is offering its platform to those aggrieved one way or the other against Magu by inviting them to make presentations. The presentations/ allegations were not made available to Magu.

“Even elements with pending corruption cases in court are invited. People being prosecuted by the prosecuting agency are making wild allegations even when pending allegations have yet to be cleared in court.”

Sources at the airport told SR that the Turkish cargo flight was parked at the international airport apron when the Middle East airbus ran into it.

Hydroxychloroquine saga: Professor says it CURES Covid-19

Debate continues to rage over the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine as cure for Covid-19.

The World Health Organisation initially recommended the drug, but later withdrew the recommendation. This followed some scientific studies that discredited the drug and also pointed out some fatal side effects.

Cameroonian-born Dr Stella Immanuel on Monday in Washington D.C. brought the drug back into public arena, claiming she had used it, along with Zinc and Azithromycyin, to great effect, to treat 350 Covid-19 patients.

Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House coronavirus task force and the nation’s top infectious disease expert, again stated, in light of the Immanuel video, that the drug is not effective in treating Covid-19.

Fauci told MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell on Wednesday that scientific evidence has shown “consistently that hydroxychloroquine is not effective in the treatment of coronavirus disease, or Covid-19.”

But days before Immanuel’s impassioned speech in Washington, Harvey A. Risch, Professor of Epidemiology, Yale School of Public Health in a now viral Newsweek article, published 23 July, canvassed for the use of the drug to treat Covid-19.

“The key to defeating Covid-19 already exists. We need to start using it”, said the title of the article.

But he warns that the drug is effective when used early on afflicted patients.

Yale University has not denounced his position.

On Wednesday, Sten H. Vermund, Dean and Anna M.R. Lauder Professor of Public Health; Professor of Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine said Risch position falls within the realm of academic freedom.

Vermund in the press release said: As Dean of the Yale School of Public Health where Dr. Risch is employed, I have championed maintaining open academic discourse, including what some may view as unpopular voices.

“The tradition of academia is that faculty may do research, interpret their work, and disseminate their findings. If persons disagree with Dr. Risch’s review of the literature, it would be advisable to disseminate the alternative scientific interpretations, perhaps through letters or other publications with alternative viewpoints to the American Journal of Epidemiology, Newsweek, or other outlets.

“My role as Dean is not to suppress the work of the faculty, but rather, to support the academic freedom of our faculty, whether it is in the mainstream of thinking or is contrarian”.

Vermund further attested to Risch’s scholarly pedigree and the fact that the controversial drug was applied in the early days of Covid-19 in America.

“Dr. Harvey Risch is a distinguished cancer epidemiologist who has opined on the topic of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and COVID-19 out-patient therapy.

“He has written a review article in the American Journal of Epidemiology that cites evidence that he believes supports HCQ use for out-patient infection with SARS-CoV-2.

“Studies that indicate no effect or harmful effects, Dr. Risch believes, enrolled patients too sick to benefit from HCQ.

“Yale-affiliated physicians used HCQ early in the response to COVID-19, but it is only used rarely at present due to evidence that it is ineffective and potentially risky,” Vermund said.

Don’t turn Edo into WAR, Benin Monarch warns APC, PDP

The Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare ll, has condemned in strong terms, the clash between supporters of APC and PDP last Saturday, that occurred at the gate of the palace.

The clash occurred soon after the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki, some PDP governors and the leadership of the party, who came for the former flag-off of the governorship campaign, left the palace.

The Monarch, in a statement issued and signed by the Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, said the palace was surprised to hear later that there was an incident outside the palace.

“The palace therefore wishes to reiterate and emphasise once more that the Benin Throne is not partisan and uses this medium to advise all political party members not to turn Edo State into a war zone because of governorship ambition,” the statement warned.

The statement went further to say that “the palace recalled the warm reception accorded the Oba by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state and Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state when the Oba paid a Thank-You visit to those states and the visit ended well.”

UK rapper Wiley says ‘I’m not racist' after twitter ban

British rapper Wiley apologised on Wednesday for “generalising” in a series of anti-Semitic posts that got him permanently banned by Twitter.

“I’m not racist, you know. I’m a businessman,” Wiley told Sky News after the social media platform made its initial suspension of the artist permanent.

“I want to apologise for generalising, and I want to apologise for comments that were looked at as anti-Semitic.”

The 41-year-old east Londoner — born Richard Cowie but known to his fans as the “Godfather of Grime” — is one of the most popular and successful artists in the British rap scene.

He had around half a million followers before Twitter suspended him for seven days last Friday for a series of posts that compared the Jewish community to the Ku Klux Klan.

Other posts said Jews controlled business interests and should get out of Israel because it “is not your country”.

Wiley also shared the posts on the Facebook-owned photo-sharing platform Instagram.

Facebook deactivated his Instagram account on Tuesday and Twitter permanently banned him on Wednesday.

But Twitter’s decision only followed a 48-hour boycott launched by several UK celebrities and members of parliament for leaving some of his posts visible for hours.

Twitter said it had used the temporary suspension period to review the case.

“Upon further investigation, our teams have permanently suspended the account in question for repeated violations of our hateful conduct policy,” Twitter said in a statement.

“Let us be clear: hateful conduct has absolutely no place on our service and we strongly condemn anti-Semitism.

“We are sorry we did not move faster and are continuing to assess the situation internally.”

British police have also said they are investigating his statements on social media accounts.

The Campaign Against Antisemitism said it welcomed the news that Twitter had “finally listened”.

But it said the decision was “too little, too late”.

“It is at least a start for this deeply irresponsible social network,” the group added.

Armed robbers attack bullion van, kill four policemen

A robbery attack on a bullion van in Ebonyi State has led to the death of four policemen.

The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the killing of the security officials on Wednesday, hours after the incident occurred.

A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Loveth Odah, explained that the policemen were escorting the bullion van to one of the first-generation banks along Ogoja Road in Abakaliki, the state capital.

She added that they were attacked and killed by suspected armed robbers along Ezzamgbo axis of the Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway.

According to the police public relations officer in Ebonyi, the driver of the van and other officers sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries during the encounter.

She noted that the bullion van was trapped in traffic at Ezzamgbo around the flyover in the area which was still under construction.

Odah said the assailants stormed the scene of the attack in two vehicles and took advantage of the traffic to open fire on the security operatives.

She, however, disclosed that the robbers were unable to succeed in carting away the money as the bullion van driver was able to escape.

The command’s spokesman stated that the robbers were forced to turn back to neighbouring Enugu State after the failed operation.

She said the bodies of the policemen have been deposited at the morgue and others who sustained injuries have been taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki for treatment.

Should you tell your new partner if you have cheated in the past? See what single's think

An Australian dating coach has polled the public about whether you should tell a new partner if you cheated in a previous relationship.

Relationship expert Louanne Ward, from Perth, Western Australia, posed the controversial question on her Facebook page, calling on members to decide if 'honesty was the best policy'.

Some people were of the opinion that meeting someone new should be like 'turning over a new leaf' and the past could be left unsaid, while others insisted that couples should be an 'open book' with one another.

'You need to look within yourself first as to why you did it and are you likely to do it again before you even consider another relationship,' one person said in response.

'That answer will only be clear depending on how the receiver of the information responds. Everyone says "honesty is one of their highest values" however when confronted with an action someone took in the past, their value of "loyalty" and sometimes "moral high ground" on a topic will totally override the courage, honesty and respect they have just been shown by being presented with the "truth,"' said another.

Why would you do that? All it would do is add a seed of doubt and insecurity in the new partner.
A third added: 'I've cheated and been cheated on so I have nothing to hide. I always try to be an open book with a new partner'.

One man questioned whether your new partner would be able to live with the knowledge that you had cheated before comfortably, or whether it would drive them away.
 .

'Hell no! What I did before doesn't need to be told to my new girlfriend because it will only cause suspicion and arguments from insecurity on her part,' agreed another man.

Another said: 'No, don't say anything... it is only a selfish act to get it off your own chest. This nonsense that total truth is best doesn't fit into being kind. Just the same way you wouldn't say your wife is fat or so on'.

Plenty of women who hadn't been cheated on before, or cheated themselves, said they would like to be told rather than find out later.

'I would much prefer honesty no matter what was done in the past. It's more about whether they have learned from their mistakes and if they have then we can't judge,' one woman said.

'I'm a completely open book and I've been cheated on a few times. I value honesty but that kind of information would have to be very, very carefully delivered - but that's me,' said another.

In Louanne's experience men tend to be more honest about past sexual indiscretions than women.

'Being transparent and owning your mistakes is far more attractive than being an avoider. It allows the other person freedom of choice to let it bother them or not,' she said.

'If someone cannot accept you for who you are when you are in the early infatuation stage of a relationship they are unlikely to be equipped to accept a revelation later down the road', she added.

Missing Billions: Ozekhome Testifies Against Magu, Submits Evidence

Ozekhome Testifies Against Magu
The drama of alleged missing Billions of Naira from the loots recovered by the EFCC under the leadership of its suspended Acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu is far from over.

Lagos-based lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), on Tuesday, appeared before the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel to testify against Magu and submitted six exhibits, including two video clips and some documents.

During the session, which lasted about two hours, Ozekhome spoke about the alleged leadership failures of Magu and the investigative deficiencies of the anti-graft agency.

The senior advocate also made recommendations to the panel on the need for the EFCC to be more professional and engage less in “media trial.”

Reacting to the development, however, a lawyer to Magu, Mr Tosin Ojaomo, said he was aware of the senior advocate’s visit to the panel.

Ojaomo said it was unfortunate that Ozekhome, who had publicly lambasted the leadership of the EFCC and Magu, could be invited by the panel, while his client had not been given the opportunity to defend himself.

The lawyer said it seemed the panel was on a “fishing expedition” and was seeking to nail Magu at all cost, hence the decision to invite people, who had grievances with the suspended EFCC boss.

He said, “We are aware of the visit of Chief Ozekhome. His grouse is the freezing of his account in 2017, which was later unfrozen. Unfortunately, it only goes on to show that the panel is on a fishing expedition, because the panel is also inviting people, who have a score to settle with Magu.

“This is not how panels are supposed to act. We all remember how the Justice Oputa panel conducted itself professionally many years ago. People, who were invited, were given petitions ahead of time so that they could defend themselves. Till date, Magu has not received any petition. Is this fair?”
