Fire Breaks Out In Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral

A huge fire swept through the roof of the famed Notre-Dame Cathedral in central Paris on Monday evening, sending flames and huge clouds of grey smoke billowing into the sky.

The flames and smoke plumed from the spire and roof of the gothic cathedral, visited by millions of people a year.

A spokesman for the cathedral told AFP that the wooden structure supporting the roof was being gutted by the blaze.

The fire service said the blaze could be “potentially linked” to ongoing renovations.


President Emmanuel Macron cancelled a major televised policy speech he was due to give on Monday evening over the “terrible fire ravaging Notre-Dame.”

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo in a tweet described it as a “terrible fire”.

“The Paris fire service is trying to control the flames,” she wrote on Twitter, asking residents to respect the security cordon thrown up around the site.

A spokesperson for the cathedral said the fire, which comes as French Catholics prepare to celebrate Easter, broke out at around 1650 GMT.

Fire trucks could be seen speeding through Paris towards the scene on the Ile de la Cite — an island in the Seine at the heart of Paris.

US President Donald Trump in a tweet said: “So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!”

14 Die In Akwa Ibom From Waterborne Diseases

No fewer than 14 persons have reportedly died between last December and April this year in Okoroutip, an oil bearing community in Ibeno local government area Akwa Ibom state from water borne diseases.

The Nation gathered that natives of the community do not have access to potable drinking water as their only source of water is from contaminated stagnant ponds.

The community is also threatened by frequent flood incidents and water surge resulting in the displacement of natives and destruction of houses.


A youth leader of the village, Mr. Henry Ekpe Nkan lamented that they depend on existing ponds and other stagnant water that flows from creeks as their daily drinking water.

“As a riverine area where there is no bush to dispose waste, the community dispose faeces and other organic substances in the water and still drink from it.”

He said this unhealthy disposition threw the entire community into water borne epidemic that has claimed fourteen lives from December last year.

Brilliant Young Lady Emerges Best Graduating Student With 9 Awards (Photo)

A Nigerian university student, A'eesha Abdullahi Abaji who emerged the best graduating student from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria has talked about her life. 

Daily Trust: What schools did you attend?
A’eesha Abdullahi Abaji: I attended Plateau Private School Jos for my Nursery and Primary education; Airforce Girls’ Comprehensive School Jos for my secondary school education and then the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

DT: What were your favourite subjects? 
A’eesha: Mathematics and Biology. I love sciences; I couldn’t have done anything else. I didn’t like English, Literature and Book Keeping. So it had to be science.

DT: Where you the best student while in primary and secondary school? 
A’eesha: In primary school, I was the best student in my own class but not the overall best in the set. And in secondary school, I was the second overall best.

DT: Who influenced you to become a medical doctor? 
A’eesha: I was a very indecisive person; I kept changing my future ambition to anything that sounds nice to me. But all my friends in science class wanted to be doctors, so when the time came to fill jamb forms, I just went with the crowd.

DT: Did any of your lecturers think you were too young to be a medical doctor? 
A’eesha: None of my lecturers ever said I was too young; I wasn’t even the youngest in my class. But surprisingly, now that I am a doctor, a lot of people seem to think I look too young. Some have even out rightly asked me my age.

DT: What challenges did you face in the university? 
A’eesha: University was my first time of being on my own (unsupervised) so I was quite scared at the beginning. Everyone in my class looked and sounded very intelligent and I thought that I wouldn’t be equal to the task, I doubted myself a lot. I was also an introvert, so I had challenges making friends in my class in the beginning, and so I hardly had any information about a lot of things.

DT: How did you feel being the best graduating student? 
A’eesha: I felt immense gratitude to God Who uplifts whom He wills and I also felt very humbled.

DT: List the nine awards you won? 
A’eesha: They are: best in Community Medicine, Haematology, Internal Medicine, Medical microbiology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Pharmacology, best female in Pharmacology, overall best, NMA prize for overall best.

DT: What is your future plan? 
A’eesha: To be a wife, mother and a specialist, in that order.

DT: What do you want to specialize on? 
A’eesha: Paediatrics Cardiology, by the grace of Allah.

DT: Where are your parents from? 
A’eesha: Dad is from Shabu in Lafia LGA and mum is from Daddare in Obi LGA of Nasarawa State, both are Gwandara by tribe.

DT: As a little girl, did anyone ever tell you that you will one day become a doctor? 
A’eesha: Of course! I can’t remember anyone ever telling me that I couldn’t. Everybody seemed to believe in me (far more than I believed in myself).

Female Student Killed For Ritual In Delta: Family Cries Out

The family of Elozino Joshuana Ogege who was gruesomely murdered four days after she was declared missing last year, are still heartbroken following the way the case is going.

Recalled that Elozino Ogege, a 300 level student of Mass Communication, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, was abducted and killed in November 2018.

Her corpse was found buried in a bushy area in
Umege after she was murdered by internet fraudsters otherwise known as ‘Yahoo boys’ who abducted the victim for ritual purpose with the support of a security staff, Onos Ekana, who worked in Site III of the university campus.

The security man who was arrested earlier – later confessed to the crime and revealed those also involved after interrogations at the State CID. The lead he gave led to the arrest of two other suspects who are said to be ‘Yahoo Boys’ who reside in Umege, a settlement in Abraka.

According to Comr. Obawharievbo Onajite, despite the arrests of the suspects involved in the crime, justice is not being served as the family of the deceased are still in deep pain. It was learnt that on the 18th of March 2019 in high court 1 Asaba, one of the culprits, a sister to the killer who was indicted in the murder - was set free by the Judicial head of the state on the grounds of Nolle Proseque claiming she's a minor.

The family of the deceased are not happy with this development as they are afraid that at the next court sitting, another accused will be set free by the court as they feel there's power from above involved in setting the culprits free.

The family is calling for the support and presence of the general public at high court 1 Asaba on Wednesday 17th April by 9am, to rally around for justice for their daughter Elozino Ogege.

Corrupt Civil Servant Loses Properties Worth Over N124m

A Federal Capital Territory High Court, sitting in Zuba, has ordered the final forfeiture of properties worth N124.5 million illegally acquired by a Principal Accountant in the Finance and Accounts Department of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Daniel Obah, to the Federal Government.

Mr. Obah, who was charged before Justice E.O. Ebong, by the ICPC, was accused of fraudulently acquiring a four-bedroom duplex in Abuja and plots of land in Rivers State.

Counsel to ICPC, John-Paul Okwor, told the court that the Commission was relying on Section 48 (2) (3) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000, which gives it the power to obtain a ruling of forfeiture seized assets acquired by individuals through corrupt means.

The Commission had argued before the court that Obah and two other staff of the Ministry, Poloma Kabiru Nuhu and Mangset Longyl Dickson allegedly carried out a coordinated fraud within the Ministry resulting in the withdrawal of N605 million from its 2014 Constituency Projects account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The assets forfeited by Obah which also include a Toyota Camry car and a 2013 Honda Accord were ascertained to be from the proceeds of the fraud.

The landed properties: one 4-bedroom duplex at Janew Home, Plot No.3 Cadastral zone D02, Karsana South District, Abuja, valued at N60 million and a plot of land at Ohia Ngbakiri, Ozuoba, Port Harcourt, Rivers State valued at N30 million.

Others include plots of land at Oliopobo, Rumuekini New Layout, Obio Akpor L.G.A. of Rivers State valued at N18 million, Umuodili Odubo, Abe Ndoni Community, valued at N16.5 million and Livingstone Estate Umuogodo, Igbo- Etche, Obio Akpor L.G.A. Rivers State.

However, Obah argued for the four-bedroom duplex to be left out of the properties to be forfeited because according to him, it was acquired with his legitimate income.

Unfortunately for him, the judge dismissed his plea for failing to convince the court with proof. He therefore ruled that all the seven properties listed by ICPC be forfeited to the federal government.

One Of World's Rarest Turtles Dies Leaving Just THREE Of Endangered Species Left

Wawu! The world's rarest turtle is now perilously close to extinction after one of its last surviving members died in a zoo in China.

There are now just three Yangtze giant softshell turtles alive after the death of the 90-year-old female at Suzhou zoo.

The tragic death of the 90-year-old turtle followed an unsuccessful attempt to artificially inseminate it.

Staff had made the attempt to impregnate the turtle after it failed to conceive naturally with a turtle 10 years its senior.


It is unclear if there is anything linking the procedure, which was said to have been carried out with no complications, with the death of the turtle.

An autopsy is due to be performed at a later date.

Bride Urged To Break Up With Fiancé Over FAKE Ring

A mortified bride-to-be revealed to advice columnist Natalie Bencivenga that her fiancé had lied about her ring. She discovered the lie thanks to a jeweller who pointed that rather than being a diamond, her ring sported a cubic zirconium and people are now urging her to leave the relationship.

"I was truly embarrassed," she wrote in her letter.

"My fiancé had surprised me with the ring and I cannot believe that he did this," she explained.

"When I confronted him about it, he just shrugged it off, saying a real diamond ring that size would've cost him a small fortune and what’s the difference, anyway?"


He further angered her by telling her that her friends "will never know".

"I don't think he understands why I’m upset," she continued. "I am upset because I feel lied to. I am ready to call the whole thing off. What do you think I should do?"

Natalie agreed that this was a shaky start to married life - and revealed that she'd be "edging toward the door".

"File this under 'bride-to-be-worst-nightmare,'" she replied.

"Having your engagement ring turn out to be a fake is not exactly the way you want to start a life together."

Fending off any accusations that the bride-to-be was being "shallow" and "materialistic" she went on:

"This is a symbol of your love and commitment to one another. To have it be a fake may make you feel as though your relationship is a fraud, too.

"Now, there is nothing inherently wrong with a cubic zirconium. It’s the fact that he didn't tell you that it wasn't a diamond.

"I wouldn't want to start a life with someone who is so willing to lie to me to make things easier on himself. What else could he be lying to you about?

"I would think long and hard where to go from here. Personally, I would be edging towards the door."

"He was intentionally deceitful," someone wrote.

"He even allowed you to go get the ring insured, fully knowing that you'd be embarrassed and he'd be 'found out' yet he didn't fess up ahead of time. Lying by omission is still lying - and I'd really consider if that's someone you want to spend the rest of your life with," another wrote.

A Nigerian man from Oluasiri town in Nembe, Bayelsa State, has allegedly shot his girlfriend dead over cheating allegations. According to Facebook user Igbogi, this happened last night around 11pm.
The suspect had claimed his girlfriend cheated on him, confronted her and while she was answering questions shot her in the face which led to her instant death.

The suspect was later apprehended and handed over to the police.

Girl Sent To Kung Fu School To Lose Weight Drops Dead 48 Hours Later

A young girl sent to a kung fu school to lose weight dropped dead less than 48 hours after arriving.

Six-year-old Deng Qi's dad waved goodbye to his "happy" daughter as she embarked on her first day at the school.

But less than two days later he received a call saying she had collapsed and been pronounced dead after failing to respond to treatment.

The youngster's family allege she was bullied to death at the famous Shaolin Xiaolong Kung Fu School, which she enrolled at on April 7.

Her father said she had been "healthy and happy" when he dropped her off on her first day.

"The next we saw our daughter was at 7 or 8pm [on 9th April] in the mortuary," he sobbed.

He added: "Her face was purple and there was bruising on her stomach from having been kicked."

CCTV footage he obtained from the school allegedly shows Deng Qi being surrounded by several uniformed pupils, who her father claims punched and kicked her.

He said: "The camera was very far away from our daughter, but it looks like someone pushes her over and then kicks and punches her."

The video shows several of the pupils later carrying Deng Qi down a grandstand to the school nurse.

The martial arts school has strongly denied the allegations of bullying leading to Deng Qi's death.

They have confirmed that the Dengfeng Public Security Bureau is currently investigating the case but released their own statement, threatening media outlets running the Deng family's opinions on the pupils tragic death.

Revealed: 23 Nigerians On Death Row In Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is defending its legal system following the controversy that trailed the beheading of a Nigerian woman, Kudirat Adeshola Afolabi, for drug trafficking.

No fewer than 23 Nigerians are on the death row in the kingdom.

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Amb. Adnan Mahmod Bostaji, yesterday said sentences are only carried out after the evidence has been established.

He described the legal system as transparent, adding that it works on fairness and justice.


He also said about 1.5million Nigerians live in Saudi Arabia unmolested.

Bostaji pleaded with the authorities at all Nigerian airports to implement procedures that will prevent drug smuggling.

The Nation has stumbled on a document listing 23 more Nigerians on the death row in Saudi Arabia.
