The Lagos State Government says it has commenced an investigation into the purported outbreak of airborne, flu-like illness, among students of Queens College and other schools in the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, said in a statement on Tuesday that an investigative team set up by the ministry was dispatched, to unravel the cause of the illnesses.
While reviewing preliminary reports of the investigations conducted by the team, Mr Abayomi said that the surveillance team identified what appeared to be a sporadic increase in upper respiratory tract infections, characterised by cough, catarrh, fever and weakness, across some schools.
According to him, the team has since visited Queens College and investigations are ongoing.
”Findings, according to the review of health records in the school sick bay, revealed that 89 students attended the clinic with influenza-like illnesses,” he said.
The commissioner said that a walk-through inspection to other facilities in the school revealed that environmental sanitation and water supply were optimal, but could be improved.
He also said that the incident was not an outbreak of any sort but an excessive number of reported cases, that needed to be investigated.
Mr Abayomi said that nasal swab samples would be collected from pupils for confirmation of the cause of the illness.
”As we await a comprehensive report of the investigation being conducted, I would like to appeal to stakeholders of Queens College, other affected schools and residents of Lagos State to remain calm.
”All should ensure strict adherence to personal and environmental hygiene, at all times, ” he said.
He advised all schools in Lagos to adopt basic precautionary measures against diseases and illnesses by teaching and ensuring good health practices.
Mr Abayomi also urged schools to promote personal hygiene and provide adequate hand-washing points within the school premises.
”They must also commence and continue to raise awareness about respiratory etiquette, hold food handlers and vendors to the highest health and hygiene check protocols, as stipulated in the law, and as practised world over,” he said.
Mr Abayomi urged students to avoid sharing personal items such as spoons, handkerchiefs, toothbrushes, among others.

President Martín Vizcarra on Monday dissolved Congress, but opposition MPs suspended him and swore in Ms Aráoz.
On Tuesday, armed police blocked legislators from entering Congress.
Some 20 MPs were inside the congressional building in the capital, Lima, refusing to leave in protest against President Vizcarra's dissolution, while streets around parliament were in lockdown.
In a late-night post on Twitter, Ms Aráoz cited a statement by the Organization of American States that Peru's constitutional court should determine the legality of Mr Vizcarra's decision to dissolve Congress.
She said she hoped that her resignation would lead to a general elections being called as soon as possible, for "the good of the country".
The Controller, Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), Abeokuta, Ogun, Mrs Violet Ogbebor, says six inmates who studied under the Borstal Training Institution (BTI), are now seeking admission into the Nigerian Universities.
Ogbebor made the disclosure on Tuesday at the inauguration of three renovated blocks and donation of 100 mattresses by the Fidelity Bank Helping Hands Project in Abeokuta, Ogun to the institute.
The Borstal Training Institution (BTI), Abeokuta, is the Juvenile arm of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Abeokuta.
It is one of the three borstals in the country; the other two are located in Kaduna and Ilorin in Kwara, the facility at Abeokuta serves the entire Southern part of Nigeria.
The Governing Council of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu, has dismissed five staff of the institution for various offences that contravene its conditions of service.
The Polytechnic Spokesman, Mr Olanrewaju Kuye, said on Tuesday in Lagos that the governing council took the decision at its meeting on Sept. 20, 2019.
Kuye said of the affected five staff, were two lecturers and three non-teaching staff.
“The council after exhausting all the due processes as contained in the staff conditions of service, dismissed five staff of the institution for offences ranging from plagiarism and falsification of students’ examination results.
“Also, fraudulently gaining employment without pre-requisite qualification, breach of confidentiality, assault and battery, among others,’’ he said in a statement.
According to him, the affected staff are Talabi Kareem, Adeniyi Olatunji, Mutiu Badmus, Anuoluwapo Olorunseun and Rashidat Abudu.
Kuye, however, noted that the affected staff had been duly communicated of the decision of the council.
Sierra Leone captain Umaru Bangura says he is considering his international future after angry supporters vandalised his house in Freetown.
The attack happened after the 31-year-old had a crucial stoppage-time penalty saved in a World Cup qualifier against Liberia last month.
"I'm surprised and shocked at the fans' behaviour to go to my house and vandalise it, and because of this I'm considering my international future," Bangura told BBC Sport.
The two-legged tie finished 3-2 to Liberia. Had Bangura scored the 94th minute spot-kick in the second leg the Leone Stars would have progressed to the first group stage of qualification for Qatar 2022 on away goals.

The Manchester United legend married Kate Wright in a three-day wedding party at D Marie Bay Hotel in Turkey this weekend, but was back at work on Tuesday.

A police officer serving at the B Division in Asaba has allegedly shot a female colleague dead in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
Punch gathered that the killing occurred on Saturday during the demolition of illegal structures at the Bonsaac area of Asaba by the officials of state Ministry of Environment in company with some police officers.
It was learnt that trouble started when the market women tried to resist the exercise.
An eyewitness said that on hearing gunshots, the women charged at the firing policeman and that in the process, a bullet from an accidental shot from the policeman hit his female colleague at the back.
The suspected killer cop, it was learnt, had been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
The source said the policewoman was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre Asaba where she was confirmed dead
He alleged that one Chief Bidi “has been molesting market women for a very long time and wanted to forcefully drive them from a plot of land they rented and set up caravans, paying the owner of the land N2,000 monthly rent for each container.
“He brought a bulldozer and connived with the Divisional Police Officer in B Division who deployed four armed police officers to the premises to supervise the pulling down of the caravans.
“Having pulled down the source of their daily bread, which was neither obstructing vehicles nor water flow, the women demanded that the caravan at the landlord’s premises be pulled down too because he had informed them that the demolition was authorised by the Delta State Ministry of Environment.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Adeyinka Adeleke, who confirmed the incident on Monday, said investigation was ongoing.
He said, “The matter is at the state Criminal Investigation Department, Asaba, so we are waiting for the report of the incident”
No fewer than 1,000 pupils of Queen’s College, Yaba, Lagos, have been taken home by their parents after the outbreak of what is suspected to be an infection.
“It is over 1,000 (pupils) now as we speak. See, I cannot talk about what I don’t know. What you have in your palm, you don’t need a mirror to look at it,” the Chairman of the Parents Teacher Association, John Ofobike, told Punch.
The Punch learnt that the pupils started falling sick after resuming about two weeks ago.
The school’s sickbay was said to be crowded with pupils, as many were also laid on benches to create extensions.
About two years ago, three pupils of the school died from water-borne infections, which drew outrage from many Nigerians who called for investigation into the crisis.
Another parent, who asked not to be identified, alleged that the school was not fumigated before the pupils resumed.

Tragedy struck in Onitsha, Anambra State on Independence Day, when a 20-year-old man from Jigawa State, Jubrin Mohammed allegedly stabbed his kinsman to death.
The deceased, Hamisu Ibrahim and the suspect, hawk sugarcane in Onitsha.
The deceased was reportedly killed during a fight with the suspect, Jubrin Mohammed along the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway.
An eyewitness told Punch, “The fight followed disagreement between the two. Efforts to separate them were unsuccessful as the suspect suddenly drew a knife with which he stabbed the deceased.
“He was immediately rushed to the hospital but he died on the way.”
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Command, Haruna Mohammed, has confirmed the incident.
He said the suspect had been arrested while the matter is being investigated.
Mohammed said, “Around 10:00 a.m. there was a report at Awada Police Station that one Jubrin Mohammed aged 20 of Jigawa State and a sugar cane seller allegedly stabbed and killed one Hamisu Ibrahim, aged 25, also a sugar cane seller from the same state during a fight along Onitsha-Enugu Expressway, Onitsha.
“Scene of crime was visited by Police detectives attached to Awada Division and suspect arrested.
“Victim was taken to the hospital where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while relatives of the deceased declined autopsy on religious ground.
“Photograph was taken and corpse released to relatives as requested for burial according to Islamic rites.”
Mohammed added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, John Abang had ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for “discreet investigation” after which the suspect would be charged.

Kidnappers of the Commandant of Irrua Division of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in Edo State, Mr. Albert Eguavoen, have allegedly demanded N6 million ransom to free their victim.
This is even as the abductors of the wife of the Managing Director of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mrs. Francisca Okhiria, have allegedly demanded for N20 million before she could regain her freedom.
It was gathered that the Eguavoen’s abductors made the ransom demand on Monday when they opened negotiation with his family.
But it could not be ascertained if the ransom demanded by the abductors was for Eguavoen alone.
Recall that the Commandant was abducted last Friday afternoon, alongside Francis Okunwe who is attached at the Area Commander of the Edo North Area Command, around Ewossa before Ekpon in Esan Senatorial District of the State, while travelling to Benin City, the State capital.
Sources at NSCDC said the officials were traveling through Igueben road, due to the bad state of the Benin-Auchi-Okenne highway.
It was gathered that his abductors allowed him to speak with his family members, during which he reportedly urged them to raise the said ransom to enable him regain freedom.
The Commandant was said to have also pleaded that the Redeemed Christian Church of God, where he is a senior usher at Eagles Wings parish of the church in Benin, should intensify prayer to ensure that he is not hurt.
A family member who did not want to be named, said: “we fear for the safety of our brother because from the voice of the kidnappers we could deduce that they are herdsmen.
“I urge the authorities of NSCDC to intensify efforts to ensure Eguavoen and his colleague’s safe return.”
Meanwhile, the authorities of the NSCDC in the State, said they have dispatched operatives into the forests in search of the two abducted colleagues.
