Spectator bleeds to death after being sliced by a blade during cockfight

A man in India has been killed during a cockfight after a sharp blade tied to a rooster cut his abdomen.

The cockfight took place in Pragadavaram village in West Godavari, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, despite a Supreme Court ban on the practice.

Cockfight organisers tied the razor-sharp blade to the leg of the rooster, police said.

The fatal injury was reportedly inflicted as one of the organisers held the animal in his hands, waiting to release it into the arena to fight.

Without warning, the bird suddenly struggled against his grip in a bid for freedom, and the blade fatally pierced the abdomen of a spectator who was standing nearby, inflicting a deep wound.

The victim has been named by local media as Saripalli Venkateswara Rao, 55.

The ban on cockfighting was defied in several areas in East and West Godavari, as part of celebrations for Makar Sankranti, a festival day in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to the deity Surya.

Makar Sankranti was this year celebrated on Wednesday, January 15.

The Supreme Court of India has banned cockfighting as a violation of the 1960 Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Despite this, the activity has remained popular, especially in the rural coast of Andhra Pradesh around the time of the Sankranti festival, with large amount of betting involved.

I don’t compromise with my work –Kunle Afolayan

It is obvious that actor and filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, always strives to be different in his career. Over the years, the singer has featured some ‘non-actors’, including Chidinma Ekile, Simi and more recently, Temi Otedola, in his movies.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, the actor maintained that the only consideration that influenced the choice of cast for his movies was competence.

He said, “From the beginning (of my career), I have always featured special appearances. As long as they are talented and doing well, the person doesn’t have to be an actor.

Once I see that the person can pull off a certain character, I give it a go. I did it with Chidinma (Ekile) in ‘The Bridge’ and Simi in ‘Mokalik’. Temi is one of the most hardworking, energetic and level-headed human beings I have ever met. She has been groomed for this for almost a year. Meanwhile, there is going to be another big announcement about someone else that would be featured in this film and it is going to catch people by surprise.”

On what gave him the conviction that Temi would be able to pull off the role she’s to play in his forthcoming movie, ‘Citation’, Afolayan said, “When I had an encounter with her, the first draft of the script wasn’t even ready and I needed a character of her age. So, I asked her to do some monologues, which she did. Then, I figured she had the potential to do it but there were other qualities I was looking for and she said she was ready to learn, especially in the area of language. The character speaks English, French, Yoruba and a bit of Portuguese. When people see the film, they would understand why she is the chosen one.”

The actor also dismissed insinuations that he cast Temi in the movie because of her father’s wealth and influence. He stated, “I wouldn’t expect anything less (from people) but those who are familiar with my works know that I don’t compromise when it comes to who features in my films. If the person has the required qualities and can deliver, then why not? This has got nothing to do with her father.”

The non-commissioned officer entered the military as a man and had a sex change operation last year and is currently at a military-run hospital, army spokesman Jeon Ha Gyu said.

N166bn debt: Electricity companies begin mass disconnection in four states

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company says it has commenced mass disconnection of defaulting customers in the four states it operates.

The states are Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers states.

The Manager, Corporate Communications, PHED, Mr John Onyi confirmed this in Port Harcourt on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

He said the exercise, codenamed Operation Storm, was initiated to sustain and avert the imminent collapse of the company due to huge debt owed by its customers.

“The huge debt amounting to over N166.012bn as of October 2019 is no longer tolerable, hence the need to recover it at all cost. The exercise in fairness will continue until every kobo owed the company is recovered for energy used,” he said.

“To this end, we have created a help desk across PHED offices to resolve and reconcile any contentious bill. Customers with the disputable bill are urged to avail themselves the opportunity by visiting any PHED office closest to them for on the spot bill reconciliation,” he said.

The spokesman urged customers to pay their electricity bills to enable the company to continue improving on its service delivery to them.

Man sues p.o.r.n hub for making it difficult for deaf people to enjoy p.o.r.n

Yaroslav Suris is suing the popular p.o.r.n site claiming it has denied the deaf and hearing-impaired access to its videos that others can easily enjoy.

In a report by TMZ, in some documents obtained, Suris says a lack of closed captioning violates their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

He further says the deaf and hearing impaired can’t understand the audio portion of videos on the websites. He goes further to say he and those in similar situations would shell out dough for Pornhub’s premium subscription but calls it pointless without closed captioning. #Priorities

Student gave birth in secret before hiding baby in pasta box and dumping her in a bin

A college student gave birth in secret before hiding the baby girl's body in a cardboard pasta box and dumping her in a bin.

Emile Weaver, now 26, kept her pregnancy hidden from her friends and professors at university - and was in denial that the baby would ever actually be born.

However, Weaver went on to give birth in private at  Muskingum University’s New Concord, Ohio - before dumping the newborn in a rubbish bin next to her sorority house.

Weaver, now serving life in prison, then text her boyfriend "no more baby", saying she had "taken care of it".

Later named Addison by authorities, the baby was shoved inside a cardboard mac n cheese box and an empty bag of Doritos before being abandoned.

Weaver said she now feels like a "monster", but still denies killing the child in 2015

Speaking to Elle magazine, Weaver said her lies to friends about the pregnancy manifested into a genuine belief.

She said: "Them not really thinking I was pregnant…manifested into a bigger [belief]: "I’m really not pregnant."

However, rumours Weaver was pregnant had began to circulate as her sorority sisters began to notice her apparent weight gain.

But, on the day she had given birth, some said she appeared to look sick and skinnier - before one friend made the horrifying discovery.

Pal Elise had noticed an unusual and tightly tied bag was leaking liquid next to the rubbish bin outside.

After opening it she saw a tiny baby's foot, and recalled screaming: "It's a whole f*****g baby."

At the very same time friends made the horrific discovery, Emile had sent a group text to her housemates saying: "Attention: Housemates, whoever made the mess in the study bathroom needs to clean it up ASAP.

"It looks like a murder scene."

Weaver told how she had been to see a nurse to get birth control when a routine pregnancy test was also carried out.

But the student never opened her results when they were sent to her - saying she was "scared" and wanted to "put it off".

Weaver continued drinking and partying at the University and even threw herself down the stairs once - with friends often suspecting she was trying to get rid of a baby.

One said: "Between her drinking...and her falling, we were honestly concerned about her because we weren’t sure if she was pregnant and trying to do something about it."

She concealed her growing bump in baggy clothes throughout her pregnancy and not even her mum, Sandy, knew what her daughter was going through.

During her trial, Weaver described how one day she rushed to the toilet, thinking she desperately needed to wee.

However, she said the baby's head came out and she pulled on the rest of the body before going to the kitchen for a knife to cut the umbilical cord.

Emile claimed the baby was stillborn, but prosecutors said she died as a result of being stuffed in a box and dumped.

Four jailed seven years for stealing noodles, cigarettes

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti has sentenced four men to seven years’ imprisonment each for stealing and burglary without option of fine.

The convicts are Owoeye Ojo, Agbetuyi Taiwo, Adeniyi Busayo and Lasisi Friday.

They were found guilty of breaking into a shop belonging to one Mrs Iyabo Ige around 2am and 5am on August 26, 2017 at Enu Odi, Odo-Ado in Ado-Ekiti and carting away packs of noodles, cigarettes, milk and packs of battery.

Justice Bamidele Omotosho in his judgment on Thursday, found them guilty of the offence of burglary and stealing based on their confessional statement and witness accounts during the trial.

The court did not give them an option of fine.

The judge, however, “did not find them guilty of conspiracy which they were also charged with.”

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Wale Fapohunda, who is the state Commissioner for Justice, said the convicts broke into a shop and carted away the items.

Fapohunda said that the offences contravened Sections 413 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti, 2012.

He called three witnesses and tendered exhibits including pictures, statements of the convicts and the stolen items.

Defence Counsel, Mr Yinka Opaleye and Adekunle Ojo, who called only one witness, pleaded for leniency, praying the court to tamper justice with mercy.
