I won’t negotiate with criminals but fight them, Bello vows
Bello spoke on Friday at a valedictory court session in honour of the late Justice Shuaib Yakubu, Justice of the Appeal Court.
He said rather than negotiate with criminals, his administration would fight them.
“We are living witnesses to pockets of crime being perpetrated in parts of the state. I want to assure you and every citizen in the state that my administration will take the war against them right into their den anywhere in the state.
“My administration will never negotiate with them; rather, we will be taking the war to them wherever they may be hiding; never again will we allow any kidnapping in the state, every citizen is assured and their safety guaranteed.
The governor showered encomium on the late judge whom he described as an impeccable character that left his footprints in the sand of times.

Gunmen abduct two doctors in Benue
Okpoga is located in Benue south senatorial district.
The gunmen also went away with a medical recorder .
The Nation gathered that the victims were all staff of General Hospital Okpoga and were said to be closing from duty when the incident happened .
Investigations revealed the gunmen waylaid the vehicle taking them home before whisking them away to unknown destination .
At press time the families of the victims were waiting to establish contacts with the abductors.
Police spokesperson Sewuese Anene , a DSP conformed the incident and said police have launched investigation into the incident.
Benue south sensorial zone has come under sustained criminal attacks especially kidnapping and armed robbery in recent time .

31 year-old Britih woman dies while having cosmetic butt-lift surgery in Turkey
Melissa Kerr, 31, of Gorleston, Norfolk, was on holiday in Istanbul when she had the procedure on November 19 last year at the city's Medicana Haznedar Hospital.
Norfolk coroner's court in Norwich was told how the mental health counsellor died during the operation, known as gluteal augmentation.
Her medical cause of death was given as pulmonary thromboembolism and fat embolism, as a result of elective cosmetic surgery.
Norfolk senior coroner Jacqueline Lake opened and adjourned the inquest on Friday. A full hearing will take place on April 7.
Miss Kerr worked as a psychological wellbeing practitioner at mental health charity Mind, according to a Just Giving page.
Her twin sister Natasha who set up the page described her as "a pure and beautiful soul inside and out".
Natasha added on the page: "Words cannot describe the pain and heartbreak we are going through, life without her will never be the same again.
"We miss her deeply and nothing will fill the emptiness we are left with."
Animal lover Melissa also worked as a volunteer helping domestic violence victims and supporting people through bereavement.
Natasha added: "She was passionate about changing the world one step at a time and lived a plant based life hoping she could save the planet and as many animals along the way."
Melissa's partner Skye Birch left a moving Valentine's Day message on her Facebook page on Friday, saying:
"My body is weak and my soul is empty, a deep pain inside I try so hard to keep from dragging me down the darkest of paths.
"So much heartache & loneliness, i wake to relive the pain you are no longer with us everyday.
"To feel your loving arms around me, to come home to your beautiful energy and smile.
"People ask me if I am doing OK but I never will be without you. I will always be lost searching for you in everything I do.
"I will continue to love you with all my heart until my last breath."

Eight football fans die in Peru road accident
The bus, which had left from Lima, fell 15m from a stretch of the Panamerican Highway in northern Peru and the impact of the fall ripped away its roof, police said.
Nearly 40 people were injured.
The bus was carrying supporters of a team called Barcelona de Guayaquil, which played the Peruvian side Sporting Cristal on Thursday in Lima.
Ecuadoran President Lenin Moreno expressed his condolences on Twitter and pledged government help for the injured and the families of the deceased.

Prince Philip's letters to Princess Diana that made her 'boil with anger'
Intimate details of their tumultuous marriage have emerged throughout the years, including during the inquest into Diana's death.
The 'People's Princess' tragically died aged 36 alongside boyfriend Dodi Fayed, 42, in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
And it's claimed Philip once sent letters to Diana, which made her 'boil with anger' and left her 'red-faced with fury'.
The notes saw Philip, now 98, criticise Diana's behaviour towards Charles during their bitter break-up.
The missives, sent in 1994 and 1995, came to light at Diana's inquest in 2008, when her confidante Simone Simmons spoke about them.
Ms Simmons, a spiritual healer, told the hearing she spoke to Diana for hours at a time over the phone - and recalled one conversation when the princess was 'furious'.
She told the inquest: "Diana read one out to me because she was absolutely furious and she was actually imitating the voice of the Duke of Edinburgh."
The pal added that Diana was going through her letters as she was reading a book about the study of handwriting.
Ms Simmons said one of the letters was handwritten, while the other was typed.
She claimed the princess let her see one of them after reading the other out loud.
The jury was shown redacted versions of other letters between the pair.
When asked if the Duke had made 'cruel and disparaging observations' about the princess's conduct, Ms Simmons replied 'yes'.
She agreed the letters had been 'extremely derogatory', with one of them leaving Diana 'red in the face'.
The claims contradicted Palace assurances that Philip only sent Diana six letters in 1992.
They were apparently 'affectionate and caring' and were written with the intention of helping the princess to deal with her crumbling marriage.
In previous hearings, the inquest was presented with heavily edited letters dated from 1992 from Philip to Diana which suggested they had a warm relationship, with the princess referring to him as “Dearest Pa”.
But further letters, dated from 1994 and 1995, were very different in tone, according to the therapist.
Philip came under pressure to testify at the inquest after Ms Simmons' account, however the coroner, Lord Justice Scott Baker, ultimately decided against calling the Duke to give evidence.
Ms Simmons claimed she believed the princess was targeted by MI6 as she apparently planned to release a document exposing British companies' links with landminess.

Rumours of the star's death began to circulate on Twitter this afternoon, leaving fans devastated.
Caroline had recently returned to the UK after retreating to Los Angeles in the aftermath of her arrest for assaulting her boyfriend.
The incident forced her to step down as host of Love Island, the show which had propelled her into the top tier of British celebrity.
But despite enjoying a hugely successful career with all the associated glitz and glamour, she had a troubled love life and was unable to find lasting happiness.

Country singer 'commits suicide' after being accused of sexually abusing a child
Deputies in Florida were attempting to serve a warrant to the 54-year-old Martin earlier today when they found him dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.
The warrant, issued out of Tennessee, was for three counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, three counts of aggravated sexual battery and one count of solicitation of a minor to commit rape of a child.
"The PSO SWAT team called in to assist, as Martin previously made threats of harm against himself and others," the sheriff's office said.
Martin, also a reality TV star, was arrested last month in Florida in wake of allegations that he masturbated next to a child, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
He was also charged for similar offenses in Tennessee in 2018.

PDP’s grand plans to tarnish Buhari’s government exposed
The presidency said as part of this overall scheme, the PDP, with its belligerent politics, had been marching from one embassy to the other in protest against the Buhari’s administration and the nation’s highest court of justice, the Supreme Court.
Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, said “They are keen to give the impression that Nigerians are in support of them as they take to the streets, and they will go to any length to promote this false narrative.
“The recent incident in Maiduguri, Borno State, where an overwhelmingly cheering crowd gathered to welcome President Buhari, while a handful were recorded booing him, is a part this elaborate scheme.
It is misleading, as some analysts have tried to do, to read this as verdict against President Buhari, who emerged winner with 94 per cent of the votes cast in the Presidential election in the state in February last year.
“This was clearly a hired few, but the news was promoted by the opposition who had of course positioned themselves to record the booing – all just to embarrass the President.”
Shehu also cautioned a section of the political class against misleading the public and inciting protests against the heads of military institutions.
He said this had become necessary in view of received reports that about two thousand men and women had been hired to demonstrate against Nigeria’s service chiefs on Monday.
“This imminent gathering is the latest in a series of demonstrations orchestrated by the opposition to embarrass the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
“We urge the media to remain unbiased and discerning in their reporting, instead of becoming unwitting tools in the hands of the opposition.
“A group of politicians and beneficiaries of the Boko Haram insurgency is right now paying for people to join their planned protest against our country’s service chiefs, and they will no doubt seek the media’s collaboration on this as usual.
“But there is news and there is promoted content – two very different things, one of which should never make the headlines as these recent fake protests have done,” he said.

Court summons Wema bank chairman, MD, four officials
The officials are Wema Bank’s Chairman, Babatunde Kasali; Managing Director (MD), Ademola Adebise; Deputy Managing Director, Moruf Oseni; Executive Director, Wole Akinleye; Executive Director, Folake Sanu and Company Secretary Johnson Lebile.
They are to explain why “committal orders should not be made against them for flagrant disobedience” of court orders.
Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke made the order on Friday, February 14, 2020.
He gave the bank officials 72 hours from February 14, till Monday, February 17, 2020, to appear.
The order was sequel to two similar garnishee suits filed by Heritage Bank through its counsel Chief Ajibola Aribisala, SAN.
The first suit is against the Ondo State Government and its Attorney-General. The second is against Idanre Local Government Universal Basic Education Authority, Ondo State Government and its Attorney-General.
Heritage Bank said it obtained judgment against the two parties at an Ondo State High Court in the sum of N1billion out of which N600million has been paid, leaving a balance of about N400million.
It said the judgment against Idanre Local Government Universal Basic Education Authority is in the sum of N405.4 million.
It initiated garnishee proceedings against both parties in the two suits and secured an Order Nisi.
A decree nisi is a court order that will come into force at a future date unless a particular condition is met. If the condition is unmet, the ruling becomes a decree absolute, and is binding.
On December 6, 2019, the court made the order nisi against Wema bank absolute, attaching the principal judgment sum of N134 million.
According to the judgment creditors, Wema Bank deposed to an affidavit that the Ondo State Government has N745 million standing to its credit and same had been attached in compliance with the order of the court.
But Heritage Bank told the court that Wema Bank failed to comply with the order of the court to pay the money despite demands made by Aribisala for Heritage Bank.
Wema Bank explained in a letter that it was yet to comply because of a notice of appeal and motion for stay of execution filed by the Ondo State Government at the Court of Appeal.
Thereafter, Heritage Bank caused the Court’s Registrar to issue Form 48 – notice of consequence of disobedience of order of the court – against Wema Bank’s officers.
Aribisala told the court that its order was still not obeyed, hence the need for the issuance of form 49 asking the parties cited for contempt to show cause why order of committal should not be made against them.
On February 5, 2020 when the matter came up for hearing, Aribisala prayed the court to compel the officials presence by issuing a bench warrant against them.
But Wema Bank officials’ counsel Wemimo Ogunde SAN, opposed Aribisala.
Ogunde contended that the form 49 was filed and served on the parties but before then, Wema Bank had already filed an application for stay of execution pending appeal.
He said the record of appeal had already been entered at the Court of Appeal.
The court adjourned till February 14, for ruling.
In his ruling on the two suits on Friday, Justice Aneke held: “The said appeal lodged by the parties cited for contempt has nothing to do with the form 49 served on them for their failure to comply with the order of the court in respect to the order made absolute against Wema Bank Plc.
“Accordingly, the parties cited for contempt are hereby given 72 hours from today (Friday) till Monday 17th of February, 2020 to appear before the court to explain why committal order would not be made against them for flagrant disobedience of the extant positive orders of the court.”

Boko haram leader shekau releases new video, threatens minister, journalists
Mr Shekau, in the nine-minute video, also threatened journalists saying they should be cautious about what they report or write about his group.
The terror leader who appeared in military attire with a turban on his head, had an AK 47 assault rifle resting across his chest, and wielded a thick chewing stick as he glared at the camera.
Mr Shekau also mocked President Muhammadu Buhari, making reference to his Wednesday’s visit to Maiduguri, where he was booed by distraught residents. Mr Buhari visited over Sunday’s attack that led to the death of over 30 travellers in Auno.
Speaking in Hausa and quoting the verses of the Quran in Arabic, Mr Shekau had asked the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, whether he was tired of leading the counterterorrism war.
The erratic Boko Haram leader also threatened a respected lawyer and analyst on counterinsurgency in Nigeria, Bulama Bukarti. Mr Bukarti is an analyst with the Co-Existence team at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, where he leads the team’s work on sub-Saharan Africa.
Mr Shekau said he released the video in response to the communication minister’s alleged plan to block mobile communication lines in order to frustrate the operation of Boko Haram insurgents.
Mr Shekau said he was angry with the minister because of his background as an Islamic cleric.
Repeating his group’s taking the credit for the death of famous Kano cleric Sheikh Jafar, who was killed by an unknown assassin on April 13, 2007, Mr Shekau said the minister may suffer the same fate should he not back out of his mission against the activities of Boko Haram.

“This warning is for Isa Ali Panatami; don’t think simply because you preach in English or because you are called a doctor, it means you have knowledge of Islam. You know nothing.Today you have become a minister, and you are feeling you can achieve your selfish ends. You must know that speaking English has nothing to do with Islam.
“You said you are going to block phone lines and other means of communication, to frustrate the activities of Boko Haram, right. But you must understand that we don’t depend on such to take out our messages. Our messengers are like the angels of God. How dare you attempt to stop the works we are doing for the creator of the heavens and earth, simply because you have become a slave to the white world and the country. We pity you if you don’t repent.
“I swear to God, you are nothing. Initially, we have not begrudged with you, but now you have become a slave to the infidels; repent now and become a good Muslim. If you don’t comply from now on, death will come to you, Isa Ali Pantami. I call on my members in Africa, in Nigeria to rise and do the needful. Let them know that what we did to Sheik Jafar is just the tip of the iceberg. Anywhere you see Isa Ali Pantami, don’t spare him. Isa Ali Pantami you are nothing; even Jafar tried the same thing but we dealt with him; talk less of you that is nothing in Islamic practice. And from today on, you would not have rest of mind because you have dared God.

American woman who murdered her husband is arrested in Italy after 18 years on the run
Beverly McCallum was arrested in Rome on Thursday over the 2002 death of her husband Robert Caraballo in western Michigan.
McCallum, who had an international arrest warrant against her, was caught after checking into a small Rome hotel overnight.
Italian hotels are required to register guests in an online system that is linked to a police database.
Prior to her arrest, U.S. authorities had been trying to extradite McCallum from Pakistan where she is believed to have fled to in the years after her husband's violent slaying.
Murder charges were filed against McCallum last year over her husband's slaying.
Her daughter from a prior marriage Dineane Ducharme and her friend Christopher McMillan were also charged.
All three were additionally charged with conspiracy, and disinterment and mutilation of a body.
The victim's body was found in a footlocker dumped and burned in a blueberry patch in western Michigan in May 2002 just days after his death.
His remains were so badly burnt that he went unidentified until 2015 when authorities received an anonymous tip that led them to McCallum's daughter who was 21 at the time of the murder.
Ducharme told police that her mother killed Carabello and that she and her friend helped clean and dispose of the body.
She said her mother made her do a practice run the day before and that the murder took place in the basement of a home in Charlotte.
Police say McCallum pushed her husband down the basement stairs and then all three attacked him when he tried to get back up.

3 million people practicing open defecation in Bauchi state
Magaji disclosed this at a one-day sensitisation and partnership meeting organised for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Coordinators and Community radio personnel in Bauchi.
He said statistics have shown that about 3 million people practise open defecation, while out of 10,000 communities, 6,000 of them practise open defecation with 4,000 using toilet facilities.
The GM said that Gov. Bala Mohammed became disturbed with the prevalence of open defecation among the people and directed stakeholders to work out strategies to reduce the prevalence.
“The Governor directed all stakeholders in WASH sector to redouble efforts and work towards meeting the water supply and sanitation needs to eliminate open defecation in the state.
“The statistics on open defecation, accessible water services and sanitation in the state are disturbing,’’ he said.
According to him, we organise the sensitisation and partnership workshop for WASH stakeholders in the communities and media personnel to strengthen the partnership and work towards attaining an open defecation free society.
He explained that open defecation has negative effects in public health, educational attendance and socio-economic development of a state.
